Ok.... I am natural, 3b & 3c wl. I love wearing it straight so I flat iron it but I also like wearing it curly. My hairdresser for over 20 years who I don't see as much wants to put a relaxer in my hair. What the...... A RELAXER?!?! after all that I went through to be relaxer free. When I did relax my hair it was super dry, brittle, would break off and only looked good when she did it! I couldn't take care of it for nothing. My hair is healthy, well conditioned and very well taken care of.

I think that she wants me back as the regular every 2-week client that I used to be. I think she subconsciously wants my hair to be damaged so I would have to come to her for "treatments" or she just wants people to see my hair and take credit for all of my hard work. I told her that she can wash, condition, blow dry, & flat iron it. If she can't do that then she can't do my hair!!

I'm not saying that it is not possible to have healthy relaxed hair. I'm saying that I can't. At this point I don't want to learn how to take care of my hair with a relaxer in it. I am good

This is why I've committed myself to learning how to style and grow my own hair out. I've met too many money hungry stylists who don't care if they damage my hair, and have no problem taking my hard earned money to do it. I remember I had a stylist who actually smirked when I looked in the mirror and commented on how damaged my edges were, then she offered me some crap she was selling that was supposd to grow them back. Since joining this site, my hair is the healthiest and longest its EVER been, and no stylist can take credit for it. Its the result of my researching and being patient with my hair and myself. And I considered myself a loyal customer to several different beauticians over the years, whether my hair was natural, permed, or weaved up. This is not to say there or no trustworthy stylists out there, but at this point in my life, the only person I trust in my head is ME.

Find a new stylist or she'll put a new "treatment" in your hair and it will all fall off. She'll mix relaxer with conditioner and not neutralize it properly. If you must go to a stylist find one who listens to your needs and acts accordingly.

She sounds lazy or unimaginative. You already have a nice relaxed curl, there is no need for a relaxer. She can get really good results with what you said a nice rollerset or a blow dry flat iron.

I'm glad you are in control of your hair :yep:

ITA, she would NOT be washing and conditioning MY hair! If nothing else, I would only allow her to style it.

I don't know if you feel compelled to be her customer since you've been loyal for over 20 years...slowly back away!

My sister's hairdresser slicked her hair down once for an updo, keep in mind she's natural with 4a hair. Ok, her hair was so slick everyone at church asked had she gotten a relaxer!!

To this day she doesn't want to believe that lady sneaked in some chemicals! She only used keracare gel so she says! I like keracare but gotdang it couldn't have slicked her hair like a relaxer.

Hairdressers are slick with this "natural" movement! They charge more and they don't want to put in the work so they find "innovative" ways to cut corners...

Glad you're in control of your hair!!!!

As the words were leaving her mouth my arse would have been leaving the chair and walking through the door. If she can't respect your wishes then drop her or as someone else mentioned you may get a "special" treatment.

No joke. That what a stylist did to Luckiestdestiny's grandma, telling her it was a new treatment knowing very well she was an older lady who wasn't feeling very well. Her long, natural and healthy hair began to break off. If they can do it to Nana, they can do it anybody.

If you are a long haired, healthy natural, run when you hear a stylist pushing relaxer despite you telling them you are not interested.

OMG I hadn't thought of that!!! I think I'm going to stick to doing it myself I just don't want to go through breaking someone else in.

Go to another stylist or start DIY.

I love my relaxed hair and it would annoy the hell out of me if my stylist kept pushing me to go natural.

Find a stylist who agrees and helps you with your hair goals.

I think she's lazy and don't want to detangle it.

Yes it is because of all of the years !! Thank you for sharing your sisters story. And as more of her customers are going natural or learning how to care for their relaxed hair themselves she's losing business. But oh well, I guess it's time to learn something new

Lol. I wasn't even at her shop when she said that I ran into her at the mall. And set up an appointment for today which I cancelled.

Same thing happened to me. I spent all this time growing my relaxer out & my stylist told me that she's not doing my hair if I don't get another relaxer. Fast forward, fully transitioned, got my own cosmetology license and now she's asking me for tips.

Find a new stylist!!

I go to the salon 2X a year. That's all they get! Nobody wants to deal with my long hair either so they always recommend a BKT treatment. They figure they can get $300 from me in one sitting instead of the $90 a year they get now LOL ummm NO

Thanks. :) My preschool teacher gave it to me when I refused to be called Goldilocks in the school play.

Just as others have mentioned, get a new stylist. Always remember that the stylist works for you, not the other way around. No need to insist on giving you something you don't want.

Browndilocks,

How difficult or easy was it to get your cosmetology license? How did you research reputable institutions? I was interested in doing something like this on the side. I have a full time job, just wondering what it would look like
