Need advice: what's more important?

I don't post often but I lurk with the best of em lol... but right now I need advice... So I'm a vegan and all of the hair products I use are cruelty free... However every blue moon (maybe once or twice a year) when I just don't have the money to spend on these fancy vegan all natural products I will purchase some suave products because they are my pre-vegan staples and because they're cheap... The thing is my hair LOVES them... I have tried product after product searching for a new set of vegan staples and nothing compares to the cheap simple products I used to use... not to mention I spend a small fortune on cruelty free products... I honestly can't decide if it's more important to me to use cruelty free products or products or products that help my hair thrive because after years of searching I have yet to find a product that accomplishes both... advice?

Hair Thriving > Cruelty Free :yep:

However, you probably shouldn't listen to me because my priorities are different from yours :look: Also, it sounds like what makes your hair thrive is gentler on your bank account than the cruelty free products.

Will you please share what brands you're using that are cruelty free? Also, what makes a product cruelty free?

I try to use products that contain no animal derived ingredients, are fair trade, and don't use animal testing

Typically I use shea moisture, Yes to, and carol's daughter brand products... I also like alba and trader joe's every so often

It's very important to me to use vegan friendly products but honestly I feel my hair did better before... I just no I would feel guilty

You can stock up on Shea Moisture during the BOGO sales at Walgreens and Sally Beauty. At Sally's, you can combine their BOGO promos with your B-Day discount etc. Yes to Carrots had a huge $2 sale online during the Holidays. I can't recall if it was BF or Xmas. I get sale promotions from Carols Daughter practically everyday that normally have some steep discounts etc.

OP, I personally wouldn't spend :dollar: on products that didn't agree with my hair. What's in the Suave ingredients that's derived from animals?

Why don't you make your own products? It is cheaper in the long run and you'll know what is in them.

Ingredientstodiefor.com or essentialwholesale.com or mountainroseherbs.com

I will use what my hair likes period. If your hair likes Suave and was thriving why not use the Suave? But that's just me.

I against animal testing and I use natural products because I have sensitive skin and I cannot tolerate certain preservatives.

I just scanned some of my products. Camille Rose and Bee Mine have the cruelty free bunny on them. The other natural brands/products don't have the bunny, but that's probably because they're not paying for the use of the bunny. Also, Oyin Handmade states on all of their containers that they don't do animal testing.

I doubt that any of the natural/kitchen mixtress companies are doing animal testing because it would be cost prohibitive.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but I'm guessing that my salon products, such as, Joico, Keracare, Mizani and Redken probably aren't cruelty free. They're all owned by huge multinational conglomerates except for Keracare.

Hey thanks HanaKuroi ! That's a good suggestion... I just haven't figured out what ingredients in the suave (and aussie) it is that my hair likes

I really like the tightly curly method and many of these "natural" products don't seem to have enough slip to get the job done... I've had such a time detangling since I've fully converted to cruelty free hair care

MileHighDiva suave is owned by Unilever which is well know for conducting animal testing

I don't use any of those products that you listed. My hair hates those too. I think it is the cruelty free products you used.

Do you clarify your hair? I think you probably have a regimen issue in addition to the products you were using. Do you have a regimen?

Do you moisturize and seal? Do you use protein?

The problem with the products your hair likes can coat the hair and fool you into thinking your hair likes them.

What I mean is my hair hates the same brands your hair does. You need to try some new stuff.

Well what are you using HanaKuroi?

That was a short list I swear I've tried almost everything out there lol

Yep I clarify once a month or so whenever I feel it's necessary... and i dc regularly usually with giovanni and use a leave in and seal with coconut oil and wear buns 5 days a week

It's not like I'm having any major problems really other than it takes me longer than I would like to detangle but other than that I've seen consistent growth

It just doesn't look as vibrant and the curls are not as defined

SheScentit has products that are excellent detanglers. Her kids Cutie Pie leave is one of the best natural detanglers I have encountered. The Avocado conditioner is also excellent.

choconillaprincess, Have you looked into Giovanni products? You can get them by the liter at TJ Maxx and massagewarehouse.com if you try them out and you like them. They are available (regular size) at Walmart and Target. Reasonable, won't break the bank, and effective. I love their conditioners, and many people rave about the Smooth As Silk condish which I need to try.

The conditioners have excellent slip IMO. If I had to type it, I have 4c/4a (thanks to henna ) hair and I can run my fingers right through my hair.
They do not test on animals and are vegan.

I have been satisfied with every Giovanni product I've tried.

Before I start listing :)

Do you use protein?

Giovanni is great for cowashing on my hair but not as a DC for my type 4ab hair type.

What type/name of leave in?

The best detangler that melts, I mean melts tangles is a conditioner I buy on ingredients to die for. I am brushing out DS locs and it is amazing. This is my first time using it on loc take down. I use it for the slip on my hair. It effortlessly detangles my hair.

Which suave?

Giovanni makes a great OTG detangling conditioner, even if not so great for DCing. It's always there if shipping costs get too expensive or you may not be in the mood to purchase online. :yep:

I have used giovanni in the past I don't care for the conditioner but I LOVES the hair reconstructor... I alternate btw that and mixed chicks (or whatever dc im using atm) because it is a protein conditioner

For a leave in my favorite is the shea moisture detangler leave in... I can't remember what it's called but it's similar to the one by kinky curly.

Suave humectant or suave naturals almond and shea

Yea I shop at places like Marshalls from time to time but I prefer consistent availability

I'll give giovanni another look

Thanks for your help ladies

Old thread but I'm surprised no one listed VO5 and Trader Joe's. Some others:

- Neutrogena (depends on if you care if the parent company tests or not)
- Deep Steep
- Juice Organics
- Organic Surge
- Yes To Carrots (I think that was mentioned)
- Organic Root Stimulator
- Nature's Gate
- Millcreek
- Desert Essence
- Eva NYC

I can't think of any more right now, but all of those are cheaper (especially VO5 being $1 or less) than those handmade brands.
