Is There A Better Way To Cover Up Gray?

I've had hereditary gray hair since I was a child. Never in a patch but throughout all of my hair. Recently I've noticed that I've had to get color touchups sooner which is now every 3 weeks and that's pushing it. I believe it has less to do with hair growth and more to do with it being in more places now. I may definitely be about 75% gray at this point but idk. My question is......has anyone used a coverup between getting their hair dyed? I've seen hair mascaras but they seen to come in wacky colors and I tried a spray because it was all I could find and it did nothing. TIA

I would like to know too. I just have random strands in the front of my hair.

Praise God. I have a large white patch in front that looks like Lily Munster (Bride of Frankenstein). I just have not been going gray with grace. I have tried henna for some years without success. The color variations were just orange regardless of how much indigo I tried and long hours of application. I am now a natural with Creme of Nature Black. I am sorry to say that my self esteem skyrocketed with the use of some color. I see a lot of ladies with beautiful gray. So far it just made me feel old.

If you are looking for something temporary like a touch up stick, this one is pretty good

You can get it at Sally's or at Amazon. Yes it is a bit expensive initially but you can wait until Sally's has a sale. It dries quickly and it doesn't rub off on your hands like the mascara and lipstick types. It also washes off easy with shampoo.

ETA: I actually have been pulling them out....but they pop right back up. I hate them with a passion lol

I use henna and indigo (mixed together) and you're right. It's brown for some days but in a week or two, it's red! I've grown to like the red though but the grays -- no way! I use a TWEEN TIME crayon for around the hairline and in the part if I have one. You really can't see the rest of the gray if you pull your hair back because it's just on the roots.

Not really but I don't have anything for it to rub off on. Once my hair is done, I'm not touching it again until bed time. I'll make a conscious effort to fiddle with my hair today and see if it gets on something. It DOES get all over my Q-Redew if I haven't rinsed it out prior to steaming but so does my indigo.

I mix henna and indigo too, and I've found that I have to use double the amount of indigo to henna.

50/50 turns red for me.

janiebaby I would have to dye my hair every two-three weeks if I were to hide all grays :nono:

That's sooo much work!! I've looked into hair mascaras and sticks too, but I'm close to giving up.

After 50 it's a wrap! :grin:

FlowerHair I'm thinking of getting one of the hair markers. Have you tried those? I can't keep coloring my hair it's just way too much (time, money, everything). My hair is also going through something at the moment but I don't attribute it to the dye.

I normally put a black rinse on my hairline, but that only last for 1 to 2 weeks tops and sometime it does not work at all...I am going to try the marker...I have used mascara when rushing, but it leaves the hair hard/sticky and comes off on your hands! LOL

I haven't tried it yet, but I should try to find one...

I wish I could wake up one day with white hair all over, then I could rock that. But having two toned hair for years...no

I tried one of the markers today

Brand: Ardell Touch of Color
Cost: $5.99 + tax
Color: Medium Brown (should have gotten black)
Pro: Covered color and came with brush applicator tip (nonremovable)
Con: Product is waxy not liquid. Left hair with a wet stiff gel look and it feels that way as well.
I obviously chose this one because of the price. The other markers were $20-$30. Good experiment but I wish I didn't try it so soon after getting my hair done but that's mostly because I chose the wrong color.

Hair marker eh? Interesting. Now that I have locs I have to be really careful with the dyeing. In the mean time I need something that is perfect for edges...my main issue. Hair marker sounds intersting.

To the poster who said they just pull them out. I used to do that until I realized that I would be thinning my hairline over time. Dyeing them is much better imo...of course just leaving them alone is best of all....but I couldnt do that. Not now anyway. Maybe when I'm older.

My hair is naturally medium brown, so most ladies definitely want a dark brown or black. The medium brown has an ashy look.

With the markers at Sally's, after applying it does dry quickly. But you will feel the residue on your hair when you touch it. You are applying something to the surface of your hair so you will feel it. I still like it better than the mascara that ends up all over my hands.

Thank you for this post. I have resorted to creating faux bangs to cover all my gray in front during the in-between coloring phase. I would need to henna every three weeks to keep the grays at bay. However, henna has caused another problem...tri-colored hair! I cannot with the black, orange, and white hair!

My Mom and sisters have all grayed early and rinse their hair every two weeks. They really like the product below a spray that they spray on their hair or on a toothbrush for better control and to add to the edges.

I think this looks like the 1st product I tried. I didn't think to apply it on a toothbrush first. I think it came with a weird applicator but it may have been another product.

I'm upping my amla and brahmi oil! I can't believe how fast the gray is coming back! Does that equal growth or just washing the gray out of your hair? :look:

I use Colormark by Colormetrics. It is a doe foot wand.

I just check their website and they have a marker as well.
They won an Allure mag award if that means anything to anybody.

I wouldn't say wet, but you have to wait a minute for it to set. After that I brush it and I don't see any flaking off etc.

It does well covering the strands of gray in the front of the head.

The Touch of Color marker I used (will not repurchase) looks like it came out but didn't rub off on my scarf.

Bought some today at CVS. Just want to touch up my edges. Would be nice if it works out. Will try it tomorrow.

Ok used it this morning and was NOT impressed. I've been using something else that worked well enough for me and even smells good (No Gray Quick Fix)...but I went on this search trying to find something better. Should have stuck to my if it aint broke....

Bump!

My sister has relaxed hair and was raving about L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss in Darkest Brown. She's like 10 years older but I have more greys... I just can't make up my mind whether or not to dye them. Henna - takes too long. Tried a semi-permanent dye (Naturtint), it didn't work at all due to low porosity. Scared of salons/permanent dye as my hair is finally at its longest length (just below BSL). I'm only 38 but I feel the greys are really ageing me.

*sigh* What's a girl to do?
