Crotchet braid newbie

As many of you possibly know I am going travelling early 2015 (Bali, Australia, New Zealand, US). I will be doing a ton of swimming in Bali and Australia so wanted a protective style that is suitable.

I think I've decided on crotchet braids but I need help because tbh I don't know anything about them

1) How long should they last?
2) Can I use human hair?
3) Can I get to my braided hair easily? for hair washing etc?
4) How easy are they to take out? (I may take them out in/ on the way to the US - where I may leave my hair natural or try out some salons)
5) How easy are they to maintain (I am happy to bin the hair after, and am also fairly happy if I need to cut off a few inches when I'm home)
6) Can they been done on my nearly waist length hair?
7) Could I leave my part out and the perimeter of my hair so it blends?

Coincidentally, I couldn't respond because I was off getting crochet braids installed. I'll answer what I can.

1) How long should they last? It depends on the hair. Tighter curled hair like Water Wave, Bohemian or Soft Water are going to last longer than looser or wavier hair. Tight stuff for me lasts 6-7 weeks; looser hair only lasts 4.

5) How easy are they to maintain (I am happy to bin the hair after, and am also fairly happy if I need to cut off a few inches when I'm home) I think they're easy. We have a crochet braid thread where people talk about how they maintain their braids.
6) Can they been done on my nearly waist length hair? Not sure. Mine is only APL.
7) Could I leave my part out and the perimeter of my hair so it blends? I've never done this so I'm not sure.

Yes you can leave your hair out and yes you can use human hair. Id used human hair in the past.

I have done crochet braids often over many years.
HTH

1) How long should they last?
I tend to keep mine in no longer than a month.

2) Can I use human hair?
I would suggest not to use human hair for crochet braids as it would slip way to easily. If you prefer to use human hair do tree braids instead.

3) Can I get to my braided hair easily? for hair washing etc?
Yes. you should not have any issues getting to your natural hair.

4) How easy are they to take out? (I may take them out in/ on the way to the US - where I may leave my hair natural or try out some salons)
They are pretty easy to take out in my opinion. I cut the extensions down and unravel the braids.

5) How easy are they to maintain (I am happy to bin the hair after, and am also fairly happy if I need to cut off a few inches when I'm home)
They are as long as you keep them wrapped up at night. The hair can tangle easily otherwise.

6) Can they been done on my nearly waist length hair?
Yes they can. If your stylist has no issues braiding all of your hair away you should be fine.

7) Could I leave my part out and the perimeter of my hair so it blends?
You can, but I would only do so if using human hair and tree braids. I wouldn't recommend leaving any natural hair out along with synthetic.

I personally prefer tree braids to crochet braids. For me they last longer, can be washed and everything without me having to worry about loosing strands like you would with crochets. Both are great options for an easy to maintain protective style.
