AphoGee Disaster..help (long)!!

Ok, so on sunday I took out my weave that I had had in for one month I had not been taking care of it, since this was before I found LHCF. After taking it down, I decided to do a protein treatment to help with the excessive shedding/breakage that I have always had (but never knew how to take care of). I had just gone to the beauty store and stocked up on all the products I thought I needed including the AphoGee 2 step treatment (hard) for professional use only...i think that was my mistake.
So I followed the directions, washed it out, put in the balancing moisturizer that they told me I was suppose to use and the rest of the products in that line. Afterwards I baggied for the night, but when I woke up, my hair was exteremly dry, and parts of it were knotted (I guess I didn't rinse throughly enough) . I am still seeing some shedding 3 days later even though I have been baggying every night and moisturizing 2x daily. So today I decided to pre-poo followed by a co-wash which in order to remove all the oil that had built up due to my trying to remedy the dryness.
I am scared to use it again, but my hair desperately needs strength AND moisture, what other protein treatments do you suggest? And how long after a treatment do you usually start seeing reduced breakage?

Did you detangle your hair well after taking out the braids and b4 doing the treatment? I would have done a moisturizing deep conditioner atleast twice b4 attempting to do a hardcore protein treatment and also most of the time the moisturizing conditioner that comes w/the aphoghee step isn't as moisturizing as we need it to be. It actually made my hair a tangled mess back in the 90's when I first started using Aphoghee.

No I probably didn't detangle well enough. I had already lost a lot from my initial combing, that I got really panicked and thought that I needed to treatment ASAP

the conditioner that comes with it is not moisturizing enough to me either. You should condition wash with a really good moisturizing conditioner. you may want to sit under the dryer for a few minutes with it. I wouldn't use any other protein containing products for now. You should be fine once the moisture gets back into the hair.

Nexxus Humectess is my number 1 moisturizing conditioner. (Deep condition with it)
and Motions Moisture Plus is a close second.

Motions CPR Treatment (in a jar/tub) is a really good protien--it strenghtens but doesn't leave my hair hard or brittle.

I would try AVEDA Damage remedy line. I have only used it a few times but I think it is a good protein/moisturizing treatment in one package. I would use this weekly and try aphogee every 6 weeks with the balancing moisturizer and any other moisturizing conditioner you may like.

AWW sweetie, I feel for you. I think that I posted a thread exactly like this last year. I had just taken out my micros and my hair felt the same way after my aphogee treatment. I didn't detangle as well as I thought I did. It seemed like the Aphogee made my hair worse. I had to slather conditioner on it while I detangled it over again and then I did a deep conditioner. Then my hair was all better. But if I had to do it over, I wouldn't have taken my hair out of braids/weave and did a protein treatment the same day. But don't take my advice as the gospel!! Your hair may be different! HTH;)

yeah you should mos def detangle before puttin in the treatment.

once the treatment is in, don't touch it. when u rinse it out let the water flush over your head until you feel your hair gettin soft. once that happens, lightly squeeze your hair to get the treatment out. make sure its all out before you put a moisturizing conditioner. i always that the Aveda Sap Moss was a pretty moisturizing. (mixing it with pure coconut oil make your hair more soft!)

I would say try a curl activator conditioner (under dryer for at least 1 hr with gobs and gobs of it on...try sleeping in it) ...then follow up with kc humecto, silicone mix (stay under dryer for at least 1 hour ) ....then add gobs of oil , any kind (rub in hair all the way through ) .....go under the dryer with it...

Then get under some running water and start at the very end.

Before you roller set or blow dry, use a cream moist hairdress especially to the ends, then all over.

Your hair is now moisterized to counter and balance the aphogee.

Next time, use kids organics detangling conditioner to detangle to help remove braids and untangle them. Trust, it is the truth!

There are several things that I believe you need to do. I used Aphogee and read up on it a lot before I used it. Using their moisturizer is not enough moisture. You need to DC with something stronger, like cholesteral or mayo to build up your moisture. Your moisture is stripped using any form of protein treatment and immediately following a serious one like Aphogee then you are going to need to do a serious moisturizing treatment.

Also because you had knots I am wondering did you detangle(sorry if this has been answered but I didn't read the whole thread)...detangling is a must!

Just moisturize and do several deep conditions and I am sure that your hair is going to be fine.

You may want to try Softresses hair pudding recipe. I like it. 1-1.5T Aphogee treatment for damaged hair,2T-cholesteral(she used Silk elements), .5-1T Kemi oyl. Mix together, apply plastic cap and sit under dryer for 30 min. Rinse then use a moisturizing conditioner if you need to.

She and Fancypants had success doing this 1x/week for awhile. I tried it for the first time a few nights ago and it didn't leave my hair hard at all.

Okay, well that probably didn't make it any better when rinsing the treatment out. You should always detangle well when comming out of braids, since the hair couldn't shed properly over the time the braids were in, they are just sitting inbtwn. the braids waiting to be combed out. So even though it may have looked like you were loosing alot of hair it was more than likely just hair that already shed and was waiting to be removed.

Well don't panic, DC with a very moisturing DC ( I always use Humectress after an Aphoghee treatment), but if you don't have that use one that you normally use and that you know is Extra moisturizing. After a few DC you should be fine. Let us know how it goes.

You know I did an apHogee TFDH the other night and my hair feels dry and is breaking. I used Nexxus afterwards. I like the ApHogee Intensive Keratin much better. I think I'm just gonna stick with it from now on and maybe try Aveda.

I'm curious to know if the breakage is worse now than before you did the treatment. Also, I think it's probably a good rule of thumb to give your hair a break in between major events (ie. removing braids to major protein treatments). I definitely second and third the Humectress. I left that on after I did my aphogee treatment for like 30 - 60 minutes with a towel over to keep in the heat and I've had no complaints. I wouldn't advise putting any more protein in your hair for at least another 6 weeks because that will only increase the breakage. And one thing that I got from Kinikakes, is saturating your hair w/ ORS hair mayonnaise (I use like a third of the bottle type saturation) for like 30 minutes, no heat (I don't even use a cap) and the hair comes out amazingly moist and supple. I would give that a try if you're still having problems.
