How did lye get such a bad rap?

Ive always heard people saying stay away from lye until I came to this board.

No-lye for me. Lye just mutilates my scalp. The only no-lye that dosen't dry me out is phyto. (it would be the most expensive one out there:cool:)

Personally, I like the way Lye makes my hair feel, but I don't like the burning.

I self relax and I only use No-lye because I am afraid to use Lye by myself. I just don't know how to gauge it so I stick with what I know.

Even still most No-Lyes I don't like. Profectiv is good. I am going to try PhytoRelaxer next time. If that does not work, I am going back to Lye professionally applied.

The best relaxer i ever had was Phyto which is No-lye. Before that I used lye relaxers but i felt like they made my hair too straight and fragile. so i voted no lye

I have used mostly Lye relaxers...Affirm, Gentle Treatment, Design Essentials, and many more all professionally applied...but I would have to say the 2 times that my hair has been at its healthiest my stylists were using No Lye. In the past it was Soft and Beautiful and now today Phyto Index 2. They may require that you moisturize your hair more diligently, but they leave my hair w/thickness and body and seem to do less damage to my hair over time. Versus the Lye which seems to flatten my hair and make it very fragile.

I'm not sure yet. For my next touch up I will be using ORS no-lye out of curiousity. Hopefully it will not be something I regret. Silk elements does a great job and straightening my hair but it's still a bit puffy and not as smooth as I think ors will make my hair..... we'll see.

I prefer No-Lye.. ORS is the best for my strands:)

UPDATE: as of 8/16/2007 I will no longer use NO-LYE I am crossing over:grin: to the LYE relaxers(texlaxing). Although I can't change the way I voted on the bar chart here is my answer below:

I have had some breakage and it was from overlapping not blaming no-lye itself on this but I am just tired of dry and brittle hair...and trying to constantly maintain moisture.. so I feel that with Lye although I will still need to keep it moisturized it won't have to be excessively done...:yep:

sorry that I had to change my vote... but that's just the way it is:rolleyes:

Great marketing:mad: ! No-lye IS the the BIGGEST LIE. It makes me angry that these companies sell their products based on big fat lies! Calcium hydroxide, Guanadine...their all lye derivitaves and generally drier to the hair because of the chemical makeup.

Needless to say lye for me...

Thanks for taking the time out to answer my question. Ive read your credentials so I most definitely trust your opinion.

I am considering relaxing again and I will give lye a try. I remember how dry and dull my hair was back with no lye kits.
