Is Genetitcs Responsible For Our Hair Length & Retention??

Do you ladies feel that not being able to get past a certain hair length goal is because of our genetics? Like if you can never get past APL, BSL, etc..

Just read an article that mentions this subject and just wanted you all's opinion on this matter.

The way your survey question is worded, "Can genetics determine length," yes genetics CAN determine length.

But it doesn't have to stop your hair growth at shoulder length, armpit length or BSL. I think we all have the potential to grow long nice hair. It just might take som longer to do so.

I think it does have a role, but like anything else, predisposition doesn't necessarily equal destiny. At least I hope not.

I totally agree.

100%. Some people have to put their life, heart and soul to get healthy APL hair and for others it comes natural.

Genetics plays a part, but also diet, health, age and lifestyle play a big part as well.

Genetics determine texture, density, growth rate and growth cycles (terminal length). Your regimen determines how much you retain and how healthy the hair is.

I would say genetics is responsible for "effortless" retention. But you can get just as much hair or more by doing a concerted effort- towards retention-- that's non-genetics related.

I think the biggest factor is genetics.

i think the kinky nature of our hair causes it to be unstable and dry since sebaceous oil doesnt travel down our hair shaft the same way as others. if it did i think the quality/strength of most of our hair would be different. but since it doesnt most of us have problems with dry hair that takes a lot of extra time and attention to keep in proper condition.

i also think if we were aware of this as children we could have offset this from the start but it seems as if most women, excluding those that have strong hair that is not common for most of us, dont get into this until adults and the pattern of dry brittle hair has already been established.

so in a way thats genetics since it's why we have such kinky hair. i think it's more about breakage though, and compounded with slower growth rates it seems like our hair just doesn't grow at all. subconsciously thinking the two things are one thing makes short hair a self fulfilling prophecy in how we care for and cut and treat our hair.

YES. However, I think our terminal length is a lot longer than APL!

Yes, of course. I personally think kinkier hair grows slower and it's harder to retain growth...so the kinker and less silky the hair the harder to gain and retain length. It's possible to get longer hair, but like others have said, it'll be much more work.
