Washing My Hair Is Stressing Me To Tears.

Thank you guys for answering! To answer some questions I wash my hair in loosely braided sections and I do detangle beforehand during my overnight pre-poo. All the shampoos I have used are sulfate free btw. Thank you!

That's why you're having problems. Sulfate free shampoos dried the living mess out of my hair. As soon as I went back to using silicone-sulfate based shampoos/conditioners, my hair has been thriving. And I don't shampoo my hair often. Nowadays I mostly cowash with a hard bristle brush to exfoliate my scalp and wash off with hot water. Seems to be doing the trick.

Hi! Thank you for helping me.

To answer your question about protein , my hair loves it! I use a few drops of protein filler in my deep conditioner every two weeks and get the softest most bouncy hair ever! I do not have protein sensitivity at all. Protein fillers turned my hair around and stopped much of my shedding and breakage.

Normally I try to prepoo with anabelles perfect blends conditioner with olive oil added.

I don't use coconut oil because it always makes my hair brittle and hard. I leave that on over night and wash the next morning by putting my hair in four loose braid and putting shampoo on my scalp ( beautiful textures curly to wavy shampoo).

I have used plenty of brands over the years cream of nature, Giovanni, l'oreal etc and still have not found a shampoo that when it touches my hair does not make it poof and snarl clump togather then utterly dry it out.

When I was using herbal essence cleansing conditioner it worked well for a while. No matting and almost no need for a follow up conditioner. But after a month or so my hair was limp, my scalp did not feel clean, and my hair started rejecting moisture to the point I almost had a major set back. I had to wash my hair with sulfates twice to get it back to normal. My hair really does not like silicone and always acts up when I use it heavily. Hope this helps!

Do you know if you are high or low porosity?

It sounds like you may be low (hair having difficulty receiving products) but hit search & YouTube to test yourself. Your hair may like certain aspects of products that contain protein but still needs extra effort to maintain moisture and stop tangling. Which means you need to alternate if not fall back on the protein products you're using.

I've never heard of Annabelle but if that's part of your current process you need to chuck it.

To start sounds like you need a clarifying shampoo so you can start from scratch. I've used ORS (green one) & Keracare 1st Lather.
[See what I wrote below for oils. You may want to use as prepoo.]

Next you need a moisturizing shampoo. These companies keep changing formulas (Cream of Nature recently pissed me off with changes again). I've used Keracare Moisturizing on both relaxed and now natural hair and my hair loves it. I've also used the Shea Moisture JBCO. Hair loves it but be warned the scent is strong.

Oils- if you don't like coconut try mixing olive oil with grapeseed, jojoba & argan. If you are low porosity then prepoing with a mix of oil using heat (or dipping oil in hot water so it's warm when you put on hair) will help your hair when you shampoo. 20 minutes under dryer is enough for me my hair still doesn't like overnight prepoing. If you were using coconut oil and didn't use heat you may want to try again once you have dryer.

Moisturizing deep conditioners I've used are include ORS Hair Repair Nourishing Conditioner. I've also used Shea Moisture JBCO deep conditioner. Again same complaint with the scent but when I used as prepoo and washed/conditioned with other products I'm ok.

If you can't get a full dryer see if you can get a portable one. Don't wait until Black Friday when you'll spend money on products before then.

I don't see what leave in you're using as a leave in. Since I did transition and figured out I'm low porosity my other steps above have made the Kinky Curly Knot Today a product I use just to have a leave in because the tangles I had before incorporating heat with pre pooing and deep conditioner are gone.

Now for styling I'm still working it out. Again my hair loves the Shea Moisture JBCO leave in. It's the only product that doesn't have my twist looking crazy after 10 hours but the scent is too much. I'm still on hunt for my new staple. As I'm writing this out and realizing how many Keracare products I use I'm thinking I may revisited my Keracare Oil Moisturizing Lotion but I need some type of gel and my hair hates all formulations of Ecostyler gel that I've tried. If Keracare has a gel I may just suck it up and buy it instead of wasting money on products my hair scoffs at.

Anyway, hope this helps!

I had similar issues and adding oil rinsing to my routine has turned my hair around. I co-wash or use diluted shampoo just on my scalp in 6-8 sections in the shower because hanging over the sink seemed to encourage tangles. After I rinse out the shampoo, I add a mix of olive, avocado, and coconut oils to my hair and let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour, then I add my conditioner on top of that. I detangle, then deep condition with heat for 30 minutes and allow the conditioner to sit for 2 more hours. I then rinse the conditioner out one section at a time in the shower and put my leave ins, Shea Moisture Detangling Spray for Kids and Kinky Kurly Knot Today in soaking wet hair, along with a little of my oil mix and twist each section back up as I'm done. My hair stays moisturized for days.

When my hair was tangling and matting I tried protein, moisture, prepoos, washing in sections. Nothing seemed to help. Then I decided to clarify with Suave Daily clarifying shampoo and I did a dc with Loreal Damage Erasing balm. That was the easiest wash day ever.

Maybe it's time to clarify especially if you usually use sulfate free shampoos.

My daughter's hair is a very coily 4a (APL) and detangling is a breeze when I DC before washing. Prior to deep conditioning and washing in sections, detangling her hair took at least an hour. Now it's less than 30 minutes. I detangle after a 30 minute DC with her hair sectioned.

You to? I'm so glad you posted this because it echo's the HORROR I feel when I have to shampoo. This is what is helping...I'm highlightiing the products because they are what helps.

coconut oil the night before
Condition with Keracare Humecto conditioiner to soften an hour before washing.

Wash scalp in a downward motion. Not across as that will encourage tangling.

Use shampoos with slip like Keracare moisturing sulfate free. Oh God this is a life saver.

Keracare Humecto conditioiner. Another lifesaver! Ive tried half of Walmart and this stuff hands down works! I use alot, but I also buy it in the 32 oz tub size.

I would like to personally thank you for recommending this. I went out and bought the shampoo and it fixed everything. I was in shock how easy it was to wash my hair. I could even sort of de-tangle with the SHAMPOO in my hair. I looked for the Humecto conditioner and 10$ for 8oz is not in my budget to spend. I can go through that on my hair in one week. Is it a good conditioner for detangling? Is it worth the price point? Is there someplace I can get a bigger bottle more affordably? It took three rinses with conditioner to get my hair to that really slippery place to where I could detangle. I dont know if it is because after washing the cuticle is raised or something. I wonder if adding aloe vera gel would help.... Do you have any other wash out conditioner suggestions?

Girl look at the pile of products you have that don't work and add up the costs. Then pick up what you know will work for now. With Keracare you don't have to be heavy handed at all so that 8 oz bottle will last longer than you think. Better products net better results. You won't need 3 rinses to get results especially since the shampoo has already made your hair more manageable.

Also did you pre poo? If your hair needs moisture you need a few deep conditioner sessions to get your hair back in balance. Don't use items you already know tangle up your hair.

Yippeeeee so happy for you! And yes that shampoo, the (I hope you bought this one) sulfate free moisturizing detlanging formula is CRAZY good! I will sometimes let it soak in my hair (I will put in my hair as well as scalp)while I bathe and detangle parts of my hair with it under running water viola! Works like butter!

The condition IS miraculous also and LIKE YOU I don't buy the regular bottle because I'll go through that much in 1 wash. I buy it by the tub. Go online Sleekbeauty, discount beauty, amazon, the tub will last a very heavy handed person like myself 6 mos. And I use a lot at a time to. Its about $50 but it will LAST. If you know of a local place that sells it buy the tub (you may need a license) you can get it for about $35 and that's very cheap for how long you will have it.

To recap..
  • Soak with the shampoo, then detangle in sections under running water (work a little oil through it and add extra slip)
  • Use the conditioner and do the same.
  • Sit under a dryer for at least 15 mins, let sit on hair at least 30 mins total, if no hair dryer take a hot towel and put around hair then add plastic cap and let sit for at least 30 mins total).
The horror or hair washing is now gone.

I STAND by this stuff.
It has truly blessed my hair, my life and my wallet.
I can now wash my own hair without running to the salon on the regular.

Enjoy! :)

Lots of great suggestions. Here are two more:

When you pour the poo into your hand, pour some oil on top of the poo, rub hands together and apply to hair. Hair will still lather but you will notice a big difference.

Also, if you are high porosity; try Roux Porosity Control shampoo and conditioner. It really has changed my hair for the better. I was skeptical at first when reading the ingredients list because it looked like any other keratin based protein product but it really works.

Thank you thank you thank you! For know I got the 8oz bottle cause my broke college student budget cant take much more, however as soon as I can I will get the bigger tub. Thank you for this suggestion. I cant believe I actually enjoyed a wash day! My mouth was agape while washing I swallowed suds! With the towel thing, I put on a plastic cap then a hot towel and then another cap right? My steamer broke and I have not replaced it yet. Thank you!

(1) Completely detangle your hair first.

(2) Part it into 6-8 sections and two-strand twist each section.

(3) Wash your hair one section at a time, re-twisting each section before you begin another section.

(4) Once each section is washed and rinsed, repeat these steps to apply your deep conditioner.

This should allow you to wash your hair without it getting matted. I actually suggest you do this in the shower so your hair can get saturated with water.

You are more than welcome so glad I could help you! I've been helped so many times here to so just passing on the blessings. If you think that's good wait until you get the tub size and use as much as you want to work it all though your hair ooowwww weeeee! And add a little oil on top. After the shampoo. And your hair will be so easy to deal with on wash day!

As for the steam towel thing I've heard you hurry up and throw a steaming hot towel IN with the hair then place a plastic cap on. I guess if you want double help, THEN do what you said, put another hot towel on then another plastic cap. But make SURE you put the towel in WITH the cap. It will steam the hair and conditioner.

loosely braided sections to me is the issue....and i think you need an oil and a creamy moisturizer...if i washed my hair in braided sections my hair would be a knotted mess..my hair needs so to be free flowing so the water and product can go down the hair shaft and detangle in the process....

also i my hair turned around when before washing or shampooing or etc---i lightly dampen my hair with a mixture of water and a cheapie conditioner and then detangle....
