I just read the ingredients. Smell isn't usually an issue for me. I don't need it to smell great. The only products I've ever used that I didn't care for the smell was Burt Bees. And if they had worked great I still would have purchased them. I care more about how they work than how they smell.

I read the Ingredients First. I know there are certain irritants I need to avoid.

I order a lot of products from on-line Handmade/Natural Vendors.

Most of the time other Posters who have purchased the item(s) will let you know how it smells.

So no worries there.

Scents are 'usually' not a deal breaker (for me) unless something is funky like Neem or too floral - hate floral.:barf:

I just go by ingredients, don't care about fragrance. I'm very weary of fragrance/parfum though, and wouldn't consider a product if it's too high in the list. A lot times one sees a product advertising something fancy on the front, and when looking at the ingredients fragrance is higher in the list than the fancy ingredient. :ohwell: No thanks. I prefer products to be fragrance-free, but those are too often hard to find.

Both, I have a sensitive nose. You'll notice my most frequently asked question is "How does it smell?" If it's OTG, I'll open it and smell it too make sure it's agreeable to my nose. Also, when I'm looking at the ingredients I look for things, I know I don't like the smell of. For example, Melissa, which has a minty type smell.

I had to think about this (pj problems). I usually read the ingredients and then smell the products. I have to be honest though and say smell is pretty important to me. I will put a product that has good ingredients back if it smells bad. And I have overlooked "bad" ingredients for a great scent.

I will not have funky hair. I just can't do it.

ETA: Even though scent is important to me, I will not continuously use a product that is damamging my hair just because it smells good.

I have a very sensitive nose, so I have to smell first, or at least read reviews or check the ingredients for any flags. Like when I bought the Cantu curling cream and DC. Big mistake. Every time I got a whiff I felt nauseous and those scents linger in your hair even after rinsing so I'd get sinus headaches and faint bouts of nausea through the day. I still can't stand the scent of it.

Since 99% of my products are from handmade online vendors, the ingredient list is the primary tool used prior to purchase. I always avoid products that are advertised as having certain aromas, such as pumpkin and cinnamon. I've only encountered two instances of disgustingly nasty smelling products, and the worst was AO White Camellia.

I might use a product with "bad" ingredients. But I would not use a product with an overpowering scent.

@imaginary reminded me with Cantu. The scent is just sooooooo strong. and it really aint that nice to be smelling so strong.

For me it depends on reviews...not necessarily the ones on this board. Ingredients and the smell doesn't matter to me. I'm really just looking for products that work for my hair....I've noticed my hair grows and retains length regardless as long as I wash and dc, so I'm not on it how I used to be.

Ingredients first and foremost second is the smell. I love all things citrus!
But scent is not a deal breaker unless it is just dreadful

Ingredients come first for me, then fragrance. My natural hair is selective with products it responds well to so I don't use many. For example, I wish I could find more lovely smelling leave-in products that don't contain glycerin. There seems to be so little choice, I find that I don't even check for 'new-to-me' products anymore.

Ingredients first but Im still hooked on bakery/dessert scents (butter cream, chocolate, vanilla, coffee etc) so I actually have bakery scent oils that I put in products lol

if it is too perfumey..it irritates my scalp.
