Naturals, it took me 27 years to find this product. (long post)

I've been a natural 4a my entire life, 27 years, and it's been a crazy journey. I've always loved my hair, but I've had no love for the knots, the detangling the matting that come with it. I purchased palm red butter from www.camdengrey.com about a month ago. After using it for a week, I nearly cried because I realized that washing and detangling my hair would NEVER be the same.

First time I used it, I conditioner washed with Elucence and detangled with my fingers, my usual routine. While my hair was still soaking wet, I applied palm red butter throughout its length and bunned it up. The next day, the residue from the butter made detangling again in the shower unbelievable. My fingers just glided through. I used to wash my hair once a week. It would take about an hour to wash and detangle. Now, I wash every day and it takes about 10 minutes. And you're going to think I'm lying, but I've had knots literally glide off of my strands since using this product. And when my hair's wet, the butter gives me a curl pattern that's out of this world (though I don't know how to maintain that when it dries.)

I can't swear that the product will work the same way for everyone. Some people swear by shea butter, and it seems to matte my hair. Same with CD Healthy Hair Butter. I also experimented with sweet almond butter, olive butter, jojoba butter and sunflower butter from the camden site. (somehow i knew a butter would be my hair's salvation). But the palm red butter is what has worked for me. Downsides: It's a colored butter. It's got a subtle buttery smell. And shipping is a beast. And I don't know if this is correlated, but when I first started experimenting with all of those butters, I briefly got a small rash on my neck. It only happened once...though honestly, I don't know if a rash would make me give this product up.

I've been on LHCF for forever. Gotten tons of tips/inspiration from so many of you. I never post because I'm insanely risk-averse. I would feel so guilty recommending something that didn't work for the same people who have helped me so much. But this time, I felt more guilty about not sharing this. I hope that those of you having trouble with matting/knots/detangling give this a try and have as much success with it as I have. And it's probably too early to know for sure, but I could almost swear that my hair is inching past what I thought was its terminal length. I guess that's what happens when you rid yourself of the knots and marathon detangling sessions.

Very true. lol. But, trust me, if my mother had found this, say 20 years ago, picture day would have turned out a whole lot better.

 Come here gurl.... we can cry together!

I LOVE RED PALM OIL. I loved red palm oil so much it inspired me to make a whipped red palm cream. I give it to any and everybody I know. It is my favorite moisturizer now. I actually love it more than aveda's universal styling cream. Oh and I'm not natural. :nono:

Now-a-days I only pre-poo w/ straight red palm, but somehow it irritates me to use that much of it at once. If you haven't tried camden's coconut oil... oh man! It smells divine, not like coconut oil out of the store. :naughty:

ETA: Somebody here said if you heat it for a few minutes it'll turn white because the heat will kill the carotene. My red palm cream doesn't stain and I didn't have to kill any of the nutrients. Oh I don't sell this stuff so I'm happy to share the method for making it. If you decide to try it and mix in the other oils/butter your hair loves and you really will be moved to tears.

so so chic: Some days, I leave the Elucence completely out of the equation. I'll just wet and detangle using the palm red/red palm? butter residue from the day before. But conditioner makes me feel like I have an extra layer of defense, so I don't go too many days without it.

sareca: Yay! I'm so glad you feel me! And I'm so glad that it works for relaxed women too. I'm just now starting to get over the awe of it. Thank you so much for the point by point on curing my downsides! See, that's why I love LHCF. I will definitely try adding some of camden's coconut oil. I could use another good cry. And I've been so impressed with the quality of their butters that I've been dying to try the oils as well.

naturaline: I never knew there was a white palm oil, but if it's got palm in the name, it's probably worth a shot.

Thanks Sareca I'm so glad I saw this thread. Your cream looks so fluffy and delicious.
I had this site bookmarked but never check it out. I am ready to try a few moisturizing recipes for hair and body. It should be fun and interesting. I compiled a list of items I will order today. I need to make another sugar scrub so I'm going to try out a few of their fragrant and essential oils.

Is this product only good on naturals? I'm a 4b relaxed head.:) Any ideas on how it might work for me?:)

I have some of this also. I use it for Deep Condition with a heat cap and it makes my hair really soft. My leaves a yellowish stain though.

You sould like my husband. :lachen: He rolls his eyes everytime he sees me up stirring something at 3A. I told him, if I still love this stuff at the end of the year I'll think about it. :sekret: I think I'd have people pick their butter/oil/protein/preservative (the base is red palm butter, coconut oil, emu oil, honeyquat, lecithin, msm). Yeah, that'd be awesome. The reason I love this formula is because it has all the stuff MY hair loves. Ya know?

Sareca another one chiming in for a request for your palmy goodness.

@ naturallady and OHQ: I'm game, but let me see how it ships first. I just sent some to my mom and my aunt. I wanna see if the jars leak or crack or if the cream can withstand the heat. When I heated a couple jars higher than 120degrees they turned into oil (a nice oil) and didn't turn back into cream again. :( I might need to find a stablizer (a natural one of course).

For those that want to recipe ping me. It's takes about 48 hours to make and is a little more labor intensive, time consuming and messier than henna but well worth it.

I have just last week added Red Palm Oil to my deep conditioner and going under the hard bonnet and my hair loves it and absorbs that conditioner like no bodies business. My hair feels soft and detangles with no problem and it stays pretty moisturized in my cornrows. bonjour

This sounded so interesting I went and purchased the product. However, I was not able to order it from Camdengrey it kept kicking me out before I could get to the checkout. So I order from safariskin. I will let you know how it worked for me.

Ok I have red palm oil that I bought last year. How do you use it? When I used it for a DC I got the worst case of dandruff:eek:. I never ever have dandruff.! Do you let it touch your scalp? I also bought the virgin palm oil (white). Any more good recipies fo these two twpes of palm oil?

I really, really wish those who try it much success with the palm butter or the oil. And even if they aren't as good to you as they have been to me (at least the butter, i've never tried the oil), I hope you don't give up looking for that holy grail product. As cheap as I am, I'm the last person to advocate product junkie-ism? But, at the least, we all have to get to a place where we don't dread wash day. It's sad to look at a big ole glorious head of hair and think nothing but, "good gracious, how badly are you going to beat me down today?" lol. I guess that's why this has been so deep for me. It's been me vs. my hair for soooo long. And I just want each one of us who's not already there to be free of that battle. Anyways, that's my two cents. Good luck, everybody.

Ok, I ordered this since Stowaway was so convincing and you know what? I am loving this stuff! My natural 4a/b puff is so soft today. I applied it to my soaking wet hair right out of the shower and it was soft immediately. I was not thrilled with the shipping prices but I love the sizes I got. They will last me at thru out the year. I ordered some fragrance oil to combat the mild smell, so I am smelling like rose petals today. Yep, I think this is a keeper.
