Mixed Chicks Debacle: O.m.g.

Backstory:
I've been to about 5 professional natural hair stylist. The first 3 I went to were at separate salons and ALL advised me that I should use Mixed Chicks hair products.

I never did, because I didn't believe the ingredients list was Curly Girl Method -approved.

Fast forward:
In the Target yesterday I saw a sample-sized container of Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner. I say to myself, "Oh, perfect." I grab it, clarify my hair, put the leave-in in my hair, slap a bonnet on, and call it a night.

O. M. Geeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I wasn't ready.

I was SO NOT PREPARED for the catastrophic hellish nightmare that awaited me. This product drew my hair up something FIERCE. I wore it for half the day because I was busy and then got in the shower to try to lengthen my hair with water.

:nono:

I spent over an HOUR in the shower trying to detangle the knotted up bird's nest that my hair had become. It was SCAAAAAAARY. My husband finally came in their to check on me. Long story short, he spent another 30 minutes trying to salvage a couple of remaining sections that were STILL knotted up.

Me: "Is it looking okay? Does it look unknottable/detangle-able?"
Him: "I don't know how to describe this! It looks like a 17-car pile-up in here."

Thank God the Father up above in wondrous heaven that I had some Shea Moisture Hi-po deep conditioning mask--which I had recently discovered works as a MIRACLE detangler for me.

My husband could not get one knot out, so I lost inches in one section. Husband said: "Man. If you have to lose inches like this, I don't know if I like natural hair for you anymore." And he was my BIGGEST supporter in transitioning and has told me how sexy he finds my natural hair.

Anybody else have such an experience with Mixed Chicks? With another product?

:nono:

:perplexed:

After I got out of the shower, I told hubby: "Hand me that Mixed Chicks. It is banned--banned I say--from this house."

Goodness!

Lawd, Hamburger! I ain't never putting nothing on my head with the word "mixed" in it.:pullhair: Glad you lived to tell the tale, but your poor hair....

See. That right THERE. :yep:

If not for not one . . . not TWO . . . but THREE . . . THREE DIFFERENT STYLIST saying what amounted to: "Ah, naw, honey! You don't have 4c or even 4a/b hair! You have a nice grade of hair. Probably 3c. It'll come out if you just use some Mixed Chicks."

Ignoring the MADDENING 'nice grade' statement ( proud 4a/b chick, here) . . . WHY, OH, WHY?

Never tried mixed chicks before but I have experienced setbacks from trying new products. That is why I stick to my old faithfuls. I be on some neurotic ish before trying anything new lol I go on Amazon to read the negative reviews (shedding/matting=no go) and search YouTube to determine if folks with hair similar to mine like it.

Well I'm there with you on this as of today!!! Phew! In my best Cedric the Entertainer voice (from the Kings of Comedy joke about the TV show South Central): "This is too serious for a Saturday night. I'm just saying . . . I can nooooot . . . "

Yeah just a lesson learned find your staples and stick with them. Don't worry tho my hair tangled so bad years ago after trying this Dominican shampoo it was paper thin once I got through combing all the knots out. Eight months later I could hardly tell that ever happened.

Yes ma'am... Like you can only use this product if you're 'mixed'? We all know what that means. People stay doing the most.

Yeah. I was weirded about by the name when I first heard it. I read their philosophy on the bottle. They said they were for all POC and multi-racials, basically: http://www.mixedchicks.net/. So I figured they simply wanted to stand out as excellent for biracial/multi-racial people and were using the name "Mixed Chicks" to market that. I never really thought of it as, "Regular black chicks need not apply."

It works as a styler for me and not leave in. It has a nice soft hold. I use a leave in underneath. I have used the kids spray detanglers in the past to help with those kind of tangles. Just saturate the knot and it really helps decrease hair loss that can happen. Doesn't sound like it agreed with your hair.

I guess to me it's just dumb because mixed people have a ridiculously wide range of hair textures. It's all about what your hair needs, not whether you're 'mixed' or not. Heck I've used products that were only marketed at white people with great success but what deterred me from using them at first was the that I felt they weren't made for people like me.

I forgot I used a product with the word 'mixed' in it... It was Mixed Roots Deep Conditioner. That was not the business and it pretty much drove home my theory about using things marketed at 'mixed' people

What line is the shea moisture mask you used from?

Mongongo high porosity line. It's new. There's a thread about their new hipo and lowpo lines. On my phone so I can't link anything. Sorry!

Every reviewer I've seen/read raves about it (the DC/masque). I thought I understood the term Holy Grail product. Uhn uhn. Not really until I used this stuff. Literally, I will not be without it if I can help it. Holy Grail.

I've never had a ton of luck with Shea Moisture products before, either, so no fan girl here. It's really this one product of theirs for me.

But YMMV. I'm hipo, fine, dense, mainly 4a . . . if that helps any.

Is there Protein in that product?

Is there Protein in that product?

:yep:

According to Amazon, the ingredient list is this:

Water, Glycerin, Amodimethicone, Emulsifying Wax, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein/pvp Crosspolymer, Stearalkonium Chloride, Methylguceth-20, Hydroxypropyl Timonium Chloride, Octyl Methoxycinnamate, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose, Jojoba Oil, Safflower Oil, Primrose Oil, Wheat Amino Acid, Crosilk, Hydrolyzed Collagen (Marine), Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Fd&c Red #40, Fd&c Yellow #5, Fragrance,

I don't know if that comma on the end means the list got cut off or what.

So sorry this happened to you. I def won't be using their products. For my hair when glycerin is one of the 1st 5 ingredients its a no for me. It matts and tangles my hair so does too much protein
