Just checking in to update on my progress. I am still wearing wigs but now that the days are warmer the wigs make me feel like I am baking in an oven. I am considering braids but I'll see. Will definately keep you posted.

Congrats to everyone still on this challenge!

Ya'll, I'm scared to wear a wig. I still think of them in the old-school terms--my grandma wore wigs and they looked fake.

Do people know you're wearing a wig or a fall?
Can they really tell your hair from your wig hair if you get a good one that's close to your natural color and length?
Do they get hot?
Oh--and the fellas. What about dating a guy who thinks it's your hair and then finds out it's not? I'd be the one with my wig slipping all off without realizing it was crooked or something, or somebody would try to touch it and end up snatching it right off.
I'm scurred.

I see falls often--those high flip phonytail things I guess--but a lot of them look so unnatural to me and I'm a natural sort of girl. I am thinning and probably need to look in this direction, but I need some guidance from the experienced people!

HeyBlu217,

I think you asked your first question - find a wig in a style, color, length that you are COMFORTBLE wearing.

For example, Beyonce can pull off blond, flowing ringlets down to her bottom - BUT would you felel comfortable walking around in the same style?

For most, the answer would be NO.

If people (assuming family, coworkers, and SO) is used to seeing your real hair and then the next day you're sporting a radically differnt look - MOST are going to know that you tweaked (they may think it is a weave) so you don't know th make a announcemnt to anyone;)

I sugguest that you go to a wig shop and try on different style. I kept thinking that I wanted a curly style at first - but they looked so fake on me.

Also you can customize the WIG - thin it out, change the part, even color if it is human hair.

These are so cute, I was interested in getting it but there were so many bad reviews about them (to the left) on Blackhairmedia.com that I decided against it. Does the wig hair resemble AA hair? Or is it shiny?

I can't ever imagine thinking something bad about these wigs! I love them. The company had discontinued just about all of the styles. I hope that means there are new ones coming, because I want more. Another one of my friends and I went to the BSS today, (Where else would a PJ take a friend. ) She had been thinking it was my hair too! :lachen:

The synthetic wigs I tried on were a little straight, but are Yaki textured. The ones I purchased are 100% human hair. Dee is the name of the lighter colored one, this one is still available, at the link in my first post. Toni is the longer, darker one in the picture. They both have the texture and sheen of healthy relaxed hair. The company also makes them in textures for more natural hair. The website is http://www.newhair.co.uk/ . You can buy them online from there if you live in the UK.

I'm natural (4b) with a twa (1/4 an inch long) and I've been rocking a cute little pixie type full wig for about 2 weeks now. My question is, how do I keep my hair underneathe moisturized? I can't seem to tolerate the nylon type wig caps. They itch and tear at my hairline. So I hadn't been wearing anything and my hair is like a brillo pad at the end of the day. At night, I conditioner wash and then sleep either on a satin pillow case or with my satin scarf (which is pink btw). I'm going to take the suggestion of someone else and buy the black satin scully's that the dudes wear. But what do I put on my hair under the scarf to lock in moisture? I think a shower cap along with the scarf AND the wig will be too hot in this D.C. humidity. Any suggestions? TIA.

Welcome Trinity05 and SNyeema! :)

SNyeema - What products are you using on your hair? Was your hair well moistuirzed before you started wearing the wig?

I rarely wear a wig caps! My wigs are very light weight, so I just let my scalp rest underneath. Plus it is getting too hot to wear a plastic cap or scraf.

So I traded in using bulky silk scarves and satin bonnets for a satin turban which fits more like a satin wig cap... I figure its the next best thing to a silk wig cap. If fits the head snug, it doesn't snag or slip and its not bulky like the satin bonnets are. I've found it at just about every BSS i've been to and i get it in black because the other colors show under the wig, especially if your wig is lightweight and doesn't have a lot of hair. Hope this helps a lot of ladies who are unsure about what to wear under their hair!

I decided to baggie under my wig for the next few weeks to compare my results!:)

I was having trouble with my baggie leaking (I'm heavy headed with my products) after I would twist/tuck the excess plastic so that it lay flat - but now I just wear two baggies. One I twist and tuck in the front and the other I twist and tuck in the back so there are NO leaks. :p

I don't think I can be apart of this challenge, at least for the summer. I ordered some hair from Katour wigs on the 3rd of this month and I have YET to receive it. I'm getting a weave and keeping it moving.

Hi Alli77,

Say it aint so!

What type of weave are you getting? Could you do a daily rinse?

I'm sure you will look great with your new do!

Good luck! CD:D

Sad to say that Katour has worked my last nerve. I was told a week ago I would get my wig and I've been waiting around like a fool for it. I couldn't hold off longer cause I haven't touched up in a long while.

I am getting something funky, a corn/afro mohawk for the summer! I'm really excited about it. I wanted to be daring!

If you're doing a wig challenge for the Fall, I'll join that one!

Nope, its very lightweight and surprisingly very thin. If you have found something that works for you and is tried and true, then by all means keep it pushin :) i didn't like the net wig caps because I was always paranoid that my hair would be rubbing up against the inner linning of the wig :perplexed

But I live in CA and its about 110 right now and it works for me.

The only problem I found with the turbans is that I recently purchased a second one and I noticed that its bigger than the first one, so I think there are variations in size from regular manufacturing mishaps or whatever. The one I first bought is tight and snug like a wig cap, but the second one is kinda loose, but still not as loose and baggy as the bonnet.

Good, I can't wait till summer's over! And I can't wait till I get this wig!! I will be trying to make my own wig soon too because I really don't see any suitable styles for me.

OK, HOW IN THE WORLD, DID I MISS THIS CHALLENGE????!!!
I LOVE to wear wigs and instant weaves! I was just thinking that it's time to really get back into that. I've been wearing my hair in buns a lot lately. When I first started wearing the falls last year, I would have all of my hair in the front pulled back and a headband covering the demarcation line, like y'all have mentioned. I couldn't corn row, so I would just plait the back up. For a while I even baggied the ends underneath, and yes, I would use the same satin turban that was posted b/c I didn't want to mess my hair up. I am one of the fortunate in that I never got breakage from the combs. I'd leave the back comb in but wouldn't secure it to my hair, I just let it rest there.

Lately, I've been doing the thing where I would cut up a wig and turn it into either an Omega part type wig--where just a horseshoe was cut open and I'd use my hair to blend, or do it the Ken Paves Hairdo way, where I would cut off my wigs and attach clips and leave more of my hair out. OF the two, I like the omega way better b/c less of my hair is out, so less styling and less blending.

I haven't worn a genuine full wig in a while, but when I would one of my favorite styles was Macao by Motown Tress. That one used to fool a lot of people. I find that curlier full wigs look more realistic than the straight styles b/c the part of the straight ones looks fake IMO.
Someone mentioned the newhair UK website. You can get those wigs if you live in the US. I actually got one from their line that is discontinued now. It's called Tanji it's an 18inch spiral curly human hair omega wig and the cutest wigs I have ever had. It was expensive--I paid over $100 for it, but it was worth it. I *just* wore that one about 3 weeks ago and got complements galore. That one is like that fur coat that you only pull out on special occasions. I wish she would bring it back b/c it was cute.

My hair grew very well w/these and I had no breakage b/c I did the right things. I con-pooed, baggied, daily moisturized, etc. I did all the right things when I wore these wigs. I have slacked off my regimen and I need to get back. I was looking at the HYHTJuly thread and it's motivated me to get back on the ball, SO I WANT IN ON THIS CHALLENGE!!!

Has anyone heard of OR seen a synthetic LACEFRONT wig?

A woman at the BSS swears that she has seen them, but couldn't provide any details about where to buy or how much. :ohwell: Some time I think other just like to TALK but if such a thing exist, I would like some details.

Call me thrifty.....but I refuse to pay hundreds for a real lacefront!:)

Yes, that's what they call them on BHM, but really it is just a synthetic wig with the front part machine ventilated. They are falls though, not full wigs. I mean, I guess you could wear them as full but IMO it looks better as a fall. I like these very much b/c they blend very well w/your own hair b/c the lace part is very thin. Unlike the regular falls, where sometimes the front is so thick and you see a big bump under your real hair where it begins.

Two brands make the: Soultress Pizazz series of wigs and Motown Tress Fine Mono Series. I've seen both types in two different BSSs in my area, but I can't find them online. They are very cute, come in different styles and lengths. I really like them. I like them when I'm wearing a fall and want to use my own hair to blend. I like the regular falls when I'm wearing a headband b/c sometimes I like that higher up look behind the headband where the fall starts, if you know what I mean--kind of like that teased look.

I definitely want to join this challenge. This will be my first challenge. I had been considering wigs for a while now I was a bit hesitant at first because my hair is so friggin thick. I keep thinking the wig is just gonna sit on my head and look obvious. I've been checking out a few online, I think I'm gonna order two to start with. I can't wait, who knows I become a wig wearing addict

I am in.

I've been wearing a wig since my big chop in Oct. 2006. I will probably wear a wig for the next 4 years.

Thanks. It is synthetic hair $26 right here in the hood. The downside it doesn't look good after 2 weeks so I am spending about the same amount of money to maintain my look a month. Go figure!

Hi everyone,

Just to let you all know, my hair has grown an inch since i started this challenge....thats about 6 weeks ago. Basically the front of my hair hit the bridge of my nose - now its past the tip! Its also significantly thicker.

I'm natural and all it do is wash and blowdry and have my mum do simple cornrows front to back. I leave it from between 1-2 weeks.

Every morning i spray braid spray and apply hair grease to the ends and my scalp (my hair and scalp dries out alot under the wigs).

I wear a fitted satin cap that i push back, exposing about 3 inches of hairline. I then put on my half wig with a hair band at front.

At night i wear a satin bonnet.

very low maintaince with the added benefit of no breakage (i used to suffer badly) and low shedding.

I want to show pics but i'm decorating at home so the PC is unplugged and i can't post pics at work.

Keep going with the wig challenge and highly recommend plaiting the hair away underneath.

Question - For those with natural hair and don't plait their hair away - doesn't your wig look really big and puffy and doesn't your hair matt up?
