Eesh!: I've Scheduled A Huetiful Nanosmoothing Treatment

YvetteWithJoy

On break
I am losing enough natural hair to tangles and knots and searching and destroying that I am just about ready to admit that I might need to texturize or relax.

I have read and watched my eyeballs DRY researching and trying technique after technique for reducing tangling and knotting. My hair is SUPER DUPER fine and SUPER DUPER dense. With the amount of time and money and hair snipping I'm putting in, I can't tell if I'm winning with natural hair. :(

I made a list of things I would commit to trying before even considering texlaxing or relaxing. I'm just about at the end of my list of products to try. After that, it's on to treatments. I will try the nanosmoothing treatment and then henna treatments.

If none of this works, eek! I might try a texlax. Three years I've been on this natural hair journey, and while it's fun, it's getting a bit costly and has become VERY time consuming. I am optimistic that I can find balance again with my hair care regimen.

I'll try to remember to post back with before and after pics of the nanosmoothing treatment, slated for August 13th.

Thanks for "listening," and take care!

My hair is fine and dense as well. My main culprits to tangles and knots have always been wash n go's and lack of moisture. I can not and will never be able to wear wash n go's without consequence.

I wear a twist out and leave it alone for two weeks. I also deep condition my hair everytime I wash it.

How have you been styling and what are you using?

At first I started out two-strand twisting. I have SO MUCH hair on my head that I couldn't swing the time commitment. And the twist-outs would become wash-and-go -looking after 2-3 days.

So I've been trying to get the wash-and-go to work. I've been trying to learn from popular fine-haired naturals who've made it work for themselves.

I'm copying and pasting from another post of mine to explain what I use. :)

WHEN NEEDED:
  • To clarify/chelate when needed: Looking for a replacement of my Shea Moisture Clear Start (professional line)
  • Extra protein when needed: Aubrey Organics GPB shampoo and conditioner
LONG WASH DAY:
  • Overnight prepoo: 1:1:1 mix of light EVOO, raw and unrefined coconut oil, and castor oil
  • Hair detoxifier (and condition as a side bonus): Naturalicious clay wash
  • Cleanser: DevaCurl Decadence No Poo
  • Deep conditioner: Shea Moisture's High Porosity Masque
  • Leave-in moisturizer/conditioner: was KCKT . . . but lately has been a new purchase: Oyin Hair Dew
  • Cuticle closer: 1:1 mix of cold distilled water and aloe Vera juice
  • Styler: was KCCC . . . my new stylist got STUNNING results (which I have yet to replicate!!!) with Uncle Funky's Daughter's Curl Stimulator . . . I'm getting my best at-home results with Shea Moisture's High Porosity gel

Current Techniques
:
  • Prepoo-ing
  • Finger detangling damp hair with SM's Hipo Masque on ends, using the HARP METHOD
  • Follow-up detangling in 11 hair sections, using the wider-tooth side of this comb (I for some reason lose the fewest amount of hairs with this comb)

  • On SHORT WASH DAYS: Water only washing (unless scalp is itchy, then I use a non-sudsing cleanser on my scalp)
  • On LONG WASH DAYS: Detoxifying/washing/conditioning at once with Naturalicious's clay wash
  • Cuticle closing after applying leave-in conditioner

I'm never going to gain length unless I keep my hair stretched or protective styled. I love my washngos but the tangles after weekly wear keep me at APL

I don't have the time to twist my hair nor do I like how they look on me. I used to do henna alot but for conditioning.

I'm really thinking a out sisterlocs pretty soon.

@YvetteWithJoy ,Where can one find these products mentioned? They do not sound familiar at all

Hi, @scarcity21 !

You can't do the treatment at home, but you can purchase maintenance hair products. Here's a video:

You can get the treatment done at a Huetiful salon. I believe they have 3 salons: One in Arlington, Texas and one in Chicago, Illinois and one in Atlanta, Georgia.

It seems similar to a Brazilian keratin treatment, but without any harmful chemicals. It is supposed to completely revert in 8-12 weeks, but you know how that is: All sorts of conversation has started about that.

Hmmm...idk to me the wash n go's are too much work and it causes you to have to re-wet, use tons of product and wash more often.

If you are detangling your hair in 11 sections I don't see how the twist outs are that much more time consuming. I usually do about 11 twists with perm rods on the end. I'm not sure how long your hair is though. Mine is almost bsl.

I use almost all KeraCare products. They make my hair soft and easy to manage. I don't use any styling products like butters and gels to twist with. Just leave-in conditioners. I detangling and wash my hair in the amount of sections that I will twist in. My hair is thriving and it is a very hard texture to work with. It has taken me years to find what's best for my hair though.

I'm starting to think this might be true for me as well. I have also considered sisterlocs.

Yes fine and dense hair needs to be stretched. Once that hair curls up on itself all hell breaks loose.

Is your hair highly porous?

Do you retwist at night?

If I don't retwist at night, my hair just starts to shrink and turn into a wash-and-go -looking style. Hardly stretched.

All the twisting and retwisting feels much more time-consuming than just applying product, but I might be wrong, LOL! I am going to see if the Bekura Tapioca Buttercreme makes a difference for my hair. Several popular naturals say it defines, moisturizes, holds, and seals all at once. If so, that might be a game changer for me.

@YvetteWithJoy looks nice but I was referring to the naturalicious clay, uncle funky stimulator, etc Are these products in BSS? Just never heard of them?

@YvetteWithJoy I don't ever leave my hair out for longer than 2 weeks. On one hand, that's a function of my being a student. On the other hand, I have definitely learned that my hair thrives when left alone for 3-6 weeks (I still wash, moisturize and DC, but no regular styling, which I think saves my hair a lot of mechanical damage).

I also like the idea of being a straight natural and 'heat training' hair. I have straightened about 4 times in my 3 years natural and I think being a straight natural while retaining length is definitely do-able. Of course, that would be an alternative to relaxing.

Henna is also a great option. I did it 4 times, 1x a month last fall, and it definitely increased definition and moisture retention, which in turn helped my hair tangle less when I left it out.

Whatever you decide, you're definitely in the right place, cuz at least one person on this board has done everything you're considering as an option AND posted about it here :toocool::lachen::lachen:

LOL! I gotcha now! Sorry.

Naturalicious is available online at their wesbite and via Amazon.com: http://naturalicious.net/.

Uncle Funky's Daughter just recently became available in select Targets, but it has been available online for years: http://unclefunkysdaughter.com/

Bekura is a spa/specialty type online vendor: http://www.bekurabeauty.com/
Bekura has a sale on at the moment if you use the correct coupon code.

I have really tried to stay away from products that can only be purchased online, but I'm finding the need to use online vendors now.

This is what I'm afraid of. :(

I feel like I've reached the point where -- since I won't be doing twistouts -- I need to go to a professional frequently. I think a part of me wanted to go natural so I could stop going to a salon all the time.

Thank you so much for your candor, @tru4reele. It helps. :)

You're welcome. It's funny because after all these years I still haven't found a good stylist. I may be trying one more lady soon and if she doesn't work out I'm done for good.

Nothing tests a stylists patience and skills like fine dense hair. Girl I have some horror stories.

@tru4reele:

Oh, I have some horror stories, TOO! I just up and left my last stylist because she keeps ripping through my hair when she detangles it. I just can't anymore. My new stylist is ah-mazing, though. I can't believe I've found her. And now there is a Huetiful salon in my area. I really hope they're good there.

Are you hipo? I ask because you said Kenra works well for you, and I don't want to add a product line to my list to trial unless it works for hipo hair. TIA!

I honestly don't know what high and low porosity means. I hear a lot about it but ever looked to see what my hair might be.

I use KeraCare not Kenra. JC Penney always has a sale on it online with other coupons too. I think you should try it. Everyone loves it whom I recommend it too. It has done wonders for my hair.

I think the daily manipulation could be contributing to a lot of your hair issues. I have super fine, high density bsl hair and when I would try to style daily I experienced more breakge and hair loss. Maybe you could find a style that doesn't take so much work

Thank you for your post.

That's just it: With the wash-and-go there is VERY LITTLE daily manipulation . . . much less than with twistouts. I hardly manipulate my hair.

Here's my schedule:

1. Sunday: Short wash day . . . wash and wear
2. Monday: Refresh hair
3. Tuesday: Refresh hair
4. Wednesday: Refresh hair
5. Thursday: Long wash day . . .wash and wear
6. Friday: Refresh hair
7. Saturday: Refresh hair

I do light finger detangling each Sunday and I do full detangling on Thursdays. If I don't, my hair REALLY tangles up.

I don't twist ever. At night I put my hair in about 6 puffy pony tails, spritz lightly with water, put on two shower caps, and put on a satin bonnet.

That's it!

Do what is good for you! I'm natural and loving it but one thing I won't apologize for is being dependent on a stylist. My hair too kinky, too thick, and getting too long to be a complete diy-er. It's just too much work and energy. As long as I'm natural and keeping my hair long a stylist will always be in the picture for me. Having help leaves me energy take better care of my hair when I do it. It work for me. Maybe you can add regular hair appointments to your list of things to try before you relax. :rose:

@alex114 so ur able to effectively wash and DC ur hair while in conrows with no buildup?
Yes I can wash and DC effectively with no buildup after four weeks and a very small amount after 6 weeks.

Some tricks of the trade:
1. Use color application bottles with nozzles to really get into your scalp.
Obviously you're not wearing the wig when you're washing your hair (unless you decide to sew it down, which some people do), but getting my scalp area under my cornrows is MUCH easier when I use applicator bottles

2.Dilute everything with water.
Your shampoo, your conditioner, and your creamy leave-ins and moisturizers must be diluted in order to mitigate build up and make rinsing easier.

3. If you can, use sprays where wherever they fit into your regimen.
I love using braid spray and spray moisturizers like the ones from Komaza Care and Oyin Handmade. My hair gets nice and moisturized, even under my cornrows once the product soaks in, and there's no buildup, since those sprays are totally liquid.

4. For prepoo purposes, I use Naptural85's Prepoo/Detangler Recipe, which is:
-Crisco Vegetable Oil
-A cheapie conditioner of your choice (V05, Suave, Herbal Essences, Herbal Essences, etc)
-Apple Cider Vinegar
-Aloe Vera Juice

It goes into a spray bottle, and you can eyeball the amounts that will work for you since you want it to be watery enough to spray smoothly and leave no buildup for your individual braid pattern, but thick enough to be effective as a prepoo. Only thing is that you shouldn't need more than 3 or 4 capfuls of ACV.

Sorry for the essay lol

@alex114 thanks so much. I wanted to do the whole wig regimen for a few months but was going to wash loose hair every 2 weeks...I think I'll try your method and see how it goes:)
