Did U Ditch Your Dominican Stylist And Now Doing Your Own Hair?

I'm highly considering ditching my Dominican stylist for good and just do my own hair. I would like to know if you've done this, what damage happened or why u ditched them and how you are taking better care of your hair? Also what are your results so far?

Why I ditched them:

  • They were so rough with my hair when combing out after rinsing the conditioner. I felt like I was losing lots of hair in the sink :pullhair:
  • When rollersetting they would yank out a lot of hair with that fine tooth comb
  • Too much overlapping when I got a relaxer
  • Those dryers I would sit under were hella hot! :mwahahafire:
  • I always felt uncomfortable seeing smoke coming off my hair from the hand blow dryers
  • My hair seems thinner than it used to be
  • When I would come in there with my 4c thick roots they would make me feel so uncomfortable :nono2:
  • Plus I don't think they truly know how to care for my hair and be gentle

How I'm taking better care: :)

  • I moisturize and seal my hair almost everyday
  • I plan on doing my own relaxer without overlapping
  • I'm being very gentle when I comb
  • I also deep condition more often
  • I'm trying to use less heat
  • Also I'm watching a lot of youtube videos to learn
Results so far:
  • My hair seems very well nourished, vibrant and thicker :yep:

I stopped going when I started to transition. Though early on in my transition I was going every so often. I would wash and condition at home so I could make sure that I was well conditioned and detangled and then go to to them and let them rollerset and blow out my roots. I can't say my hair was super damaged from doing so. I did notice some loosening of my hair that kinda resembled what heat trained hair would look like, but the hair was still thick. It wasn't bone straight and limp. I would go to one lady in particular and she never shunned my hair while doing it.

I have mixed feelings about them. I think overall, they're technique is more catered to a certain hair type and you have to find someone in the salon that is good with doing your hair. I'm hearing from my relaxed friends that more and more naturals are going to them. I've seen straight hair naturals in real life that have beautiful hair that go to them. I like that I'm in control of all the products used there. I like the body and movement of a rollerset and blow out.

When I use to go to them when I was relaxed I never had issues with rollersetting and breakage, or anything because I was in control. I used products that moisturized my hair, leave ins that made rollersetting a breeze - I had a system of what shampoo to use, conditioner, leave in. My hair was easy breezy for them to handle.

I stopped going to them because my hair became very damaged, thin and weak. I was going about 3 times per month which was way too much. I always washed and conditioned at home because I didn't like their products. But the blow drying and flat ironing were too much. If I ever go again it will be for a roller - set and I won't let them blow dry roots or flat iron will just let them rollerset dry under the dryer and then I will bun and go.

That's probably best. And you'll cut down on heat damage big time!

I stopped going to them when I realized that my hair wasn't making any progress. If anything, my hair got shorter and that was over 15 years ago. I started giving myself touchups and that didn't go too well in the long run. Now that I haven't had a relaxer in three years my natural hair is making progress. With natural hair, I have nothing to fear. I don't have to worry about overlapping or too much trimmings. Overlapping was the worst because no matter what you do, you cannot prevent it. Right now, I'm anticipating that in another two years, I will reach my goal of un-stretched collarbone hair. As long as I follow my regimen of wash, deep condition, the LOC method my 4c natural hair should be good.afro:

Do it. You'll save your money and save your hair. I ditched all hairdressers years ago. They're never going to treat your hair with the care you will. I trust my hair to no one. Even I mess up my own hair but its in TONS better shape then my salon days.
I used to get blowouts with a Russian woman and also by Dominicans. They both destroyed my hair. I once got a relaxer with Dominicans that eventually broke part of my hair down to like 2 inches. Idk if it was the relaxer or just the blowouts, improper conditioning etc. But never never again.

I used to wash at home too because they never got all the scalp buildup off my scalp. So I had to pre clean lol.

I believe blow outs are EXTREMELY hard on the hair. My hair was in it's worst shape when I got frequent blow outs. I haven't had one in many years. Flat ironing and roller sets are the way to go.
That round brush gripping and pulling does not get a long with my hair and the dryness from the boo dryer is no joke.

It may take years to learn to do an amazing job at home but eventually you learn and you get to know your hair in the process. I can straighten my hair better than any salon ever did. It took many years to master though but I'm kinda slow with these things

I lost a lot of my curl pattern on the ends of my hair. I also had a lot of breakage on my edges. Lots of TLC and trims helped me get my hair back to health.
I LOVE your hair! Very healthy. I had breakage along my edges but never contributed it to my stylist. Now it makes sense.

I left them alone after I got heat damage.

I must admit I heard stories about their techniques but I still wanted to get the experience and the first few times my hair was so silky straight as if I just had a relaxer but after the 3rd time my hair started to look wiry ans weighed down and thin. I washed my hair and realized I had heat damage that was it for me I got the damaged hair cut off and I continued to transition. I also didn't like their products which I couldn't see the name. Even though their prices are very low compared to other salons I've gone to I just didn't like that I was blindsided by the fact that I had to pay more because of the length of my hair.

I ditched them about 3 years ago. I go occasionally (maybe 2 times a year) but mostly I started to just roller set and flat iron. My hair can't take the blow dryer. I can't believe I used to let them blow out my hair while I watched and smelled smoke coming out of it! No wonder I had constant split ends and damage.

Plus they are so intent on getting your hair so pin straight that I had very little body when I left the salon. They were rough with the shampoo and detangling. Anddddd I couldn't get with bringing my own products. Sometimes they wouldn't use heat protectant! If I have to tell you every little thing you need to do and bring every product you're going to use I rather do it myself!
