What are your staples/holy grails? I am a Kerastase stan. I use their Discipline line to tame frizz as well as the Nutritive and Restistance lines for moisture and protein. My favorites are the Curl Ideal Cleansing conditioner, Chroma Riche Mask, Therapiste mask, Maskeratine, Lait Vital and Masquintense thick.

What gives you the best curl definition?
Nothing has ever defined my "curls". My hair has an erratic coily zig zag pattern so I never try to define it anyway. I either stretch it with braids or I blowdry and straighten.
  • Gel- never use gel except for aloe vera on my edges once or twice
  • moisturizer- Herbal Essences Touchably smooth cream
  • DC- Chroma Riche, Therapiste
  • leave in- Mane n Tail
  • Oils- Argan oil, hot six oil
  • edge control- none
  • shampoo- Ion Healthy scalp
  • co-wash- Kerastase Curl Ideal
What have been your most effective length retention methods? My hair grows best when I avoid tangles and knots, so I try to keep it stretched at all times. I never do wash and gos. The most textured style that I wear is a braidout and that is rare.

My strands are fine to medium size and I have high porosity on the ends and normal porosity towards the roots.
I love the Discipline line. Do you deep condition when using the Curl Ideal Cleansing conditioner? Also how often do you use the Therapiste mask?

After the curl ideal I usually dc for about 20 minutes. This week I'm using the Discipline Maskeratine. At first I was using Therapiste on a weekly basis, but since getting a bkt I don't need as much protein.

CLOG - I love it :lachen:
Plan: Cleanse, DC, and C.L.O.G.:

1. Cleanse: ORS Creamy Aloe or Naturalicious clay wash (to remove old product)
2. DC: Sitrinillah Deep Conditioner
3. Conditioner: DevaCurl Decadence One Condition (rinse out slightly, leaving some in)
4. Leave-in: Bekura Honey Latte Detangling Hair Milk
5. Oil: jojoba oil
6. Gel: Blue Roze Beauty Marshmallow Cream Gel (love that it's creamy) OR DevaCurl gel

Hair type: coarse/cottony 4b and 4c with pen spring size coils and zig zag waves.

Staples/Holy Grails: Oyin Hair Dew leave in, protein conditioner every 2 weeks, black tea clay mix 2 times per month

What gives you the best curl definition?
Moisturized healthy hair, clay washes, and gel.

Whats your favorite

  • Gel- Wetline Professional
  • moisturizer- Water
  • DC - Oyin Honey Hemp Conditioner, MillCreek Botanicals Keratin
  • leave in - Oyin Hair Dew
  • Oils - jojoba in my clay mix
  • edge control- NA
  • shampoo- Nexxus split end mender, clay
  • co-wash- I no longer co-wash only. I either water rinse or shampoo + DC.
What have been your most effective length retention methods?
Keeping hair twisted or braided. Stretched loose hair in a bun is not good for my length if worn too long. Low manipulation. More protein. More shampooing and less co-washes. Using a leave-in. Not ignoring my hair for more than a week.

This thread has been soooo helpful!

I used Sprangz today! :look:

Last night/today's wash day and the ah-mazing smells all night and this morning are a hit! My hair feels soft and smells yummy.
  1. I deep conditioned overnight with HairVeda's Sitrinillah Deep Conditioner which I rinsed out with cool water in the morning,
  2. I applied DevaCurl One Condition to my roots (I could see in my shower mirror that definition was needed at the roots),
  3. I applied Bekura's Honey Latte Milk all over and flashed it under the shower water to further distribute it then applied a little more,
  4. I applied Blue Roze Cream Gel (Oh! So wonderful to take a BREAK FROM goopy gel!!!),
  5. I put Sprangz on about 15 hair sections to elongate my hair as it dried, and
  6. I used the diffuser to hurry along the drying (I'm taking the 6-year-old to his cousin's birthday party today and have to get moving).

I've updated the title to include all Type 4, Coarse, HiPo ladies :)

I watched this vid the other day and it made me pick up a jar of curl activator gel, any ladies here have good results with this product?

I really like curl activator (whether cream, gel, liquid...whatever) as a leave-in under a strong-hold gel. It really gives my hair long-lasting moisture, definition and actual sheen. I went on a curl activator gel kick recently and now I have like 7 32-oz. jars of activator gel :look:. I have used it on it's own, and it is nice, but I feel more secure with the extra hold from a regular gel on top.

Anyone hipo use henna before? If so how did it work out?
I have! I actually gave my take on it on the first page but I'll say it again, I love it, its the best protein strengthening treatment I've ever used and it always revives and reinforces my strands, I find it particularly helpful whenever I'm using heat regularly to replenish my strands. I like the coppery glow it gives my hair, its just all around awesome lol, btw I use nupur mixed with coconut milk.

I'm 4b coarse so its slight overkill for me to use a treatment that thickens the strands the way henna does so I haven't done it in a good while but I have quite a bit in my freezer for whenever I feel like doing it again:yep:

Also it didn't impact my 4b coil pattern at all, I think thats more of a concern for type 3 ladies and mayybe fine haired ladies, hell, I bleached my hair blonde 5 yrs ago and even that didn't impact my texture:lol:

Yay! Now I'm excited to use the Long Aid CAG i just bought:grin: might try it under eco:scratchchin:

I'm loving my bkt'd hair! My ends are softer, smoother and stronger than before. My porosity seems like it evened out and I detangle in less time. I could probably use less product, but I'm heavy handed with my conditioner.

Hi all!

What are your staples/holy grails? avj, lavender oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, redken hair cleansing creme and neutral protein filler
What gives you the best curl definition? I haven't experimented enough with curl definition but avj does help my hair to clump, and of course ecostyler gel
Whats your favorite
  • Gel Gorilla snot
  • moisturizer SM curl and shine conditioner. This is one of the few glycerin free moisturizers that I've found to work wonders on my hair. I love it. Wish I lived in the US so I could stock up on it.
  • DC Still trying to find favourites, but I know for sure that anything with BTMS and centrimonium chloride will work well for me. Right now I'm loving Every Strand Shea and Coconut DC and I recently tried the Novex Argan oil DC and loved it as well
  • leave in SM curl and shine conditioner
  • Oils lavender oil, olive oil, jojoba oil
  • edge control Gorilla snot gel
  • shampoo Redken hair cleansing creme
  • co-wash Herbal Essences Hello Hydration or Clay wash with either bentonite or rhassoul clay
What have been your most effective length retention methods? Still trying to work these out, but Bun-ing with banana clips has done wonders for minimizing breakage. And when I need a break from buns then finger coils are also awesome. Henna has also been a hair-saver, I can feel my strands getting stronger with prolonged use. The curls at the ends of my hair loosened up a bit when wet but it dries the same as before.

I want to take it to the next level and invest in more banana clips and maybe a puff cuff and eventually use marley hair for my buns so I won't have to keep plaiting and pulling out my hair for the style. This will have to wait until I can find another job though, so for right now, I'm keeping my hair flat-twisted for longer periods to see how that works for me. Learning how to cornrow is also on the agenda.

@BlackMasterPiece thanks for your response. I'm glad to hear it's working for you! I definetly need to try it out maybe on my next 3 day weekend I'll do the full thing. I think I'll try a small patch first to see what the color really looks like. If it wasn't for the color I would've henna'd a long time ago. I'll use your coconut milk suggestion my hair loves that stuff.

I just washed with sm high porosity cowash. My hair felt coated, rather than soft and clean like when I use other products. It kinda felt dry as i was putting it on as well. I am under the steamer with sm manuka and honey dc.

Anyone else experience this?

Thank you! :sneakyhug:
This department is a mess and trying to clean it up is just.... :pullhair::computer::lachen:

I've been promising @YvetteWithJoy my list since forever! I apologize honey, I recently received a promotion and have been swamped.

Here are my hair specs:

4a/3C fine, high porosity, VERY dense. I give the appearance of thick hair, but I just have tons of fine strands.

I have little to no root definition, my hair looks like 4a clouds...lol. I would consider it to be spongy. Super tangly, SSKs galore, breaks easily, and of course moisture retention issues.

Holy Grail
100% Silk Scarf - DO NOT. I REPEAT DO NOT sleep on this. (Well actually you do need to sleep on it ! :giggle:)
Silk scarves LOCK the moisture in your hair.
They changed the game for me so much. I was using satin, but after using silk. I will never go back. My hair so much more soft and manageable. I'm actually noticing less SSKs!!
SheaMoisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Hair Masque ( It's for fine hair and my goodness takes my hait to the next level)
. . .
Veggie Glycerin
. . .

Great Products
Living Proof Restore Conditioner - (After 1 use it is on the great list, after much usage..I expect it to be bumped to HG status.)
. . .

@cutiepiebabygirl, how is work going? Also, how is the Living Proof Restore Conditioner faring?

I just ordered a silk head scarf: https://www.etsy.com/listing/400238187/beautiful-chemo-alopecia-head-scarf100

It is pretied and adjustable, 100% silk, and something I'd wear out of the house. Yay!

I tried the SM Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Masque. It is a good masque. :yep: I don't think it outperformed SM's Hipo Masque for me, but I'll have to use it a few more times to confirm!

Hey honey!
Work is settling finally! :yay::yay:

I really like the Living Proof conditioner, I use it with every wash, it's a mild to moderate protein, but my hair feels great using it. They have a product I would see all the time in TJ Maxx/Marshalls that is supposed to help with fine, frizzy hair. I can't tell you how many times I picked it up and put it down in that past. Now that I know the brand is pretty solid, I'm eager to find that product to try.

You will love the silk scarf. Do you clarify/shampoo before you try new products? Just curious.

How is the dryness coming? Once you get over that hump, you won't have to try a billion products and you'll be able to get your regimen set. Did you try the hairscapades conditioner experiment?

At the moment, I'm trying to use up products and just buy my staples from here on it. It looks like it's going to be Oyin, Qhemet, and APB.

Yay! Glad work is finally settling down.

I did try the hairscapades DC experiment. I tried it with the SM Fruit Fusion Coconut Water masque. That's why I'm not completely sure of its effects. I combined two new things at once (the DC and the technique of sealing with a rinse-out). Should have waited, but was too curious about the technique! LOL! My hair felt really good after. I'm going to have to try the two things separately, though: I need to try the DC experiment using the hipo masque, since I know it performs awesome for me, and see if the moisturizing effects are longer lasting when sealed with a rinse-out.

Then I need to try the SM Fruit Fusion masque just by itself.

And yes, I do clarify when I try new products. I use ORS Creamy Aloe Shampoo. I know I trial a lot and thus clarify a lot and that's part of my dryness problem.

That said, the dryness is much better otherwise. (The TANGLING, KNOTTING, and SSKs, however, are a different story. Cry! :cry3:) The following sequence is awesome, of which Oyin Hair Dew is the star:

1. Naturalicious rhassoul clay wash
2. DevaCurl Decadence One Condition (ah-mazing . . . defines my curls and moisturizes!!!)
3. Oyin Hair Dew (moisture infusion!!!)
4. Jojoba oil (actually seals for me . . . though I wonder if I should combine it with castor oil, because castor oil despite being a little too thick has a long-lasting effect on my hair in a good way!)

Related . . . and here's the thread https://longhaircareforum.com/threads/way-to-change-disgusting-scent-of-a-hair-product.800397/ . . .

I put this one product on section of my hair after seeing NaturallyQuinn demo/review it, and maaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnn! I have NEVAH seen my hair like that: shiny, moisturized, springy, hydrated, elongated . . . I can't describe it with words.

First ingredient is glycerin. It's a DC / leave-in / washngo styler.

Problem is the product is DISGUSTINGLY expensive and the product stinks (at least my sample did). Reviewers say it smells awesome, so I'm wondering if my sample got hot/tainted. Someone who makes and sells products says once she gets a chance, she'll see about helping me replicate it. I can't get the vision of that hair section out of my head! LOL!

@YvetteWithJoy What do you use for a protein treatment? Is it the shea moisture HiPo? That would explain your dryness that masque probably doesn't have enough protein for your strands, you might need some more heavy duty stuff.

Thanks for the help, @kodochax.

Here's my history with protein.
Before last year, I'd never HEARD of needing protein for the hair, much less a protein-moisture balance.

I was scared to use protein. So I baby-stepped it by starting out trying AO GPB (shampoo and conditioner).
Next I tried a Nutress protein pack (from Sally's, because it has almost universal good reviews).
The last protein treatment I gave myself was the SM 10-in-1 masque.

Oh, Lordt. I don't know WHAT happened, but I DC'd with that SM 10-in-1 masque overnight, and the next morning I did not recognize my hair. It went from naturally hanging similar to my avatar to becoming completely shrunken up. It was like I had someone else's hair. I had to start all over learning how it felt, how to style it, how to detangle it, etc. My hair felt very strong, but not like my hair at all.

Since then, the only protein I've put on it is the protein in my DevaCurl Decadence No Poo and One Condition.

I have no idea if the way my hair looked after the SM 10-in-1 masque is what my hair looks like when healthy . . . or if that was an over-proteinization. I'm still waiting for it to loosen back up and unfurl again and be my hair again.

I am totally confused.

Also: I never got that wonderful rave feeling with AO GPB that everyone was always talking about. I just kept using it every time I felt like my hair might be under-proteinized and thus close to starting to break.

Going to reply within your quote first, this is only what works for me. Our hair is different so it may not work for you & you might need to tweak some things. I believe high porosity people need protein treatments like low porosity people need deep conditioners.

Thanks for the help, @kodochax.

Here's my history with protein.
Before last year, I'd never HEARD of needing protein for the hair, much less a protein-moisture balance.
Oh I completely get this naturals push deep conditioning and being protein free all the time, which sucked for me because I kept trying to figure out wth my hair was like a rock even after deep conditioning for hours on end. I would moisturize my hair at 8am and it would be dry again by noon, and I never even left my house. LOC, LCO, LOCO, LCB. None of that crap worked for me. My steamer is in the corner of my room collecting dust.

I was scared to use protein. So I baby-stepped it by starting out trying AO GPB (shampoo and conditioner). No hydrolyzed proteins, the people who raved about this were probably low porosity. As a general rule of thumb, if a low porosity person can use it on a regular basis it's not strong enough for me.

Next I tried a Nutress protein pack (from Sally's, because it has almost universal good reviews).
Good one, I've never got around to trying this myself ( it's on my list tho). It has hydrolyzed vegetable protein, do you remember how your hair felt after using this?
The last protein treatment I gave myself was the SM 10-in-1 masque.
Hydrolyzed rice protein and all the way at the bottom of the list. Probably wouldn't do much for you.

Your hair just didn't like the combination of ingredients it's happened to me before, shea moisture works for some but I find all their masks to be sub par. Don't let this scare you away from using protein. The protein is so far down the list it couldn't have been that.

Since then, the only protein I've put on it is the protein in my DevaCurl Decadence No Poo and One Condition.
Good choice, these have hydrolyzed quinoa and as far as I know hydrolyzed quinoa has the ability to penetrate the hair strand and it's up in the list so this is good to use on a regular basis.

I have no idea if the way my hair looked after the SM 10-in-1 masque is what my hair looks like when healthy . . . or if that was an over-proteinization. I'm still waiting for it to loosen back up and unfurl again and be my hair again.
Definitely not, my hair gets softer, stronger and my coils clump more whenever I do a protein treatment.

I am totally confused.

Also: I never got that wonderful rave feeling with AO GPB that everyone was always talking about. I just kept using it every time I felt like my hair might be under-proteinized and thus close to starting to break.

I know protein can be scary because you can get to the point where you have too much protein which can lead to breakage ( I haven't yet but I hear you can :p) but if you're really high porosity you are so far from that point (just judging by the products you are using). I recommend reading http://science-yhairblog.blogspot.com/2015/10/protein-101-lots-of-basic-information.html & this http://science-yhairblog.blogspot.com/2011/08/mysteries-of-hydrolyzed-proteins.html to figure out which hydrolyzed protein might work best for you. My favorites are hydrolyzed keratin & collagen. Try to make sure your hydrolyzed proteins are within the first 5 ingredients.

I know you're on a no buy but when you get the chance I highly recommend starting with Komaza Protein Strengthener. I won't recommend aphogee 2 step because it stinks, and you have to get your hair hard which can really put you off from wanting to use it again. If you do decide to do a protein treatment don't do a long DC session you'll be taking two steps backwards, so do a short one . Even then only if you honestly feel like you need it! Not because people say you should. I personally just follow up with a moisturizing rinse out usually some CJ so I can finger detangle.

Had gel in my hair from yesterday so I did a cowash session

Cleanse & Detangle with Curl Junkie Daily Fix & finger detangled, APB is going to have a hard time beating CJ for me.

Hopped out shower and used Chi Keratin Mist all over my hair this has a water soluble silicone which I'm completely on board with because it also has hydrolyzed keratin & silk and only cost me $11. I also learned that this has a PH of 3.5! which helps to close my cuticles. My hair is in sprangz but I'm running my hands down my roots and it feels so smooth! So I'm going to pass on my smelly ACV rinses and use this.

Added Sprangz for stretch, I made 16 sections in my hair and added 2 sprangz per section I like this much better than having over 20 sections. My hair is still drying not sure how I want to style. Might just be lazy & puff tomorrow. I'll add a leave in probably Camille rose curl milk and if I style Oyin shine & define.

@kodochax, I'm just now realizing that you put additions into the quote of mine that were answers and tips and questions! LOL!

WOW! SMOOCHES! Thank you so very much.

Your question was:
[Next I tried a Nutress protein pack (from Sally's, because it has almost universal good reviews).]
Good one, I've never got around to trying this myself ( it's on my list tho). It has hydrolyzed vegetable protein, do you remember how your hair felt after using this?

No, I don't remember how my hair felt after, and I don't have a journal entry in my journal about it. I do have some more of those packs, though, and can do another treatment with it and journal it and share here. I do remember being scared to death about losing my hair or something while it was in, and then AFTER the Nutress treatment having the thought, "Oh, well. That wasn't too bad. We (hair and I) survived!!!"

ETA: Thanks a BILLION for the information about the effects of that 10-in-1 Masque on my hair. I should send you $25 RIGHT NOW for that information alone! I could KISS you! I am 63% set back right in terms of understanding my hair now. ;)

I took them out before I saw this. I'll take a picture next time!

Not sure about the minis they seem a bit harder to work with since they are so small.

I love oyin, I'm almost through the jar of shine & define. I bought 5 different stylers on curlmart including shine & define in the same order and I haven't even cracked the other ones open. This thing closes my cuticles way better than acv rinses do. I picked up juice & berries which has the same PH of shine & define( A 3!) to see if this can work similarly. I keep coming back to Oyin & I love it.

I tried the Oyin Hair Dew because of all the rave reviews all over the 'net, and I haven't regretted it. I have wanted to try the Whipped Pudding and the Shine and Define, but the reviews aren't quite as stellar for these two. I get a little fatigued with taking risks on products sometimes.

I have been eyeing Oyin's snack pack, though (samples of everything). Maybe after the no-buy.
