2016 Milestone Challenge...(not A Length Challenge. No Length Goals)

What are you doing that you think is contributing to thicker hair and your crown and edges filling in. That would be helpful to my milestones as well.

I haven't worn a headband since my last post. Is that 2 weeks yet? The back of my hair looks nice and thick. I'm not sure if it actually looks thick or if I'm getting used to wearing my hair with no headband.

Still working on thickening up my hair. I feel like I'm going in the opposite direction and my hair is thinning. I have been stressed lately and eating like crap. Have to fix this.

@KammyGirl
Sorry I've taken so long to answer. I never saw this. What's thickening my hair is:
Jamaican black castor oil, nightly scalp massages and spraying a moisturizing mist on my crown mid-day as well as the morning and evening (its super dry)

I have stopped wearing headbands since I rarely pull my hair back in a bun now so the edges and nape have filled in nicely. and finally I've continued wearing a two strand twist ) one on each side, I'd say 90% of the time so it keeps my hands out of my hair.

How are you doing with your goals? Eating at least semi healthy and exercising even modestly both really help with stimulating the circulation and encourages growth

Oh thanks!! Been doing the oil and scalp massages intermittently. I need to get serious if I want to use up my oils and see progress I guess. But it messes up my style and I only wash 2x a week.

Cutting out wearing headbands was a major milestone for me. I've reached that and only wear one every now and again for puffs when I'm being lazy which is few and far between. Been racking my brain for more milestones to come up with. Getting my trouble spots to fill in was another major one which I've done and getting the perimeter in a braid was another which I've also done. Lol I'm out of ideas.

Just read through this thread again and I have to say I am very proud of myself. I struggled quite a bit at the beginning if the year and then found a decent rhythm. By 6 months in I had started to make progress on some milestones. I couldn't have done it without all the help, tips and support in this thread. My hair is overall happier and I think I know what I'm doing now. I did my update in August so here are some 4th quarter goals I came up with.
  • Regular scalp massages to help with thickning hair
  • Complete decent Bantu knot set in 30-45 minutes (these have been taking me a long time and since I mastered the perm rod set in under an hour thought to give this a shot - could be because I make them too small)
  • Get hair into a bun without the front and top sticking out. Enough just to smooth with a tiny bit of gel
  • Stick to the shampoo every other week regimen. My hair doesn't need it every week since I don't use heavy products much anymore
  • Trim only once in December but still try to maintain decent ends by being gentle when detangling, no tugging on the ends when I'm setting my hair and moisturizing my ends with a cream. The cream will most likely be my taliah waajid curly curl cream. Perfect thickness for me and almost like a moisturizer and sealant put together for my hair.
Glad I came up with something.

4th quarter goals :)
- Combing hair gently from the bottom...every time
- alternating where I part my hair
- heavier sealing for my ends
- add oils to my weekly deep conditioner
- do at least one ACV rinse per month (I've never tried this)
- continue with all the things I've been doing in the first three quarters

ETA grow my crown to catch up to the rest of my length

Okay...so, my 4th quarter goals:

1. Consistently invert (especially since I'm in the Inversion Challenge:confused:)
2. Keep up with coloring my greys (every 3 months instead of 6 months)
3. Continue with my dusting/trimming schedule (when needed)

Thanks for letting me join ladies!!!

This challenge is so important!!!That stylist cut of more than 3 inches of hair. I should have gotten out of her chair when she started dry combing my hair. These are the reason why I have to learn how to style my hair on my own.

Ohhh maybe I'll add the inversion to my list. So we're supposed to do this once a month for 7 days straight right. I've tried this before and always forgot so I gave up.

Yes, so I think many do one week on, one week off--and yes, consistency is the key--That's why I'm doing this challenge hoping that it will keep me on my game! Do it!

I'm in with the following style goals:

2nd Quarter

Do a roller set

Do a twist out

Do a wash n' go

Do a bantu knot out

4th Quarter

Do a flat twist

Do a braid out

Do a perm rod set

Do finger coils

I decided to do a couple of my 4th quarter goals this month and I did the flat twist and braid out, but both styles ended up looking like a shrunken wash 'n go. I decided that I will not attempt the perm rod and finger coils in the 4th quarter. I have enjoyed my hair for 6 months and now it's time to put it away under wigs for the next 6 months.

I have been washing and co cleansing once a week followed by a dc. My hair has never felt better. Today I used Ion shampoo and Densite mask with a little Lait Vital for extra moisture. Now I'm airdrying my celies in 2 ponytails. I will redo the braids once my hair dries a bit more.

Styled my hair today and I put my hair in 4 sections. I may have mentioned this before but it seems like it's faster. Except...it isn't.:look: I can do each section in 15 minutes which still keeps me at an hour for styling. I'm getting tired and really think I need a go to style that is fast, cute, doesn't require heat and won't cause breakage. Maybe I could make this another milestone? Idk.

-Take more progress pictures.
-Drink more water.

Got an idea from the twist out thread on how to do my hair faster. There is a video posted in there where the girl parts her hair in four sections. 2 in front, one in the middle and one in back. Then she she takes those sections and parts them in 3 and does 3 twists each section. I think I can cut my time in half doing this. Now, how will it turn out since my hair is short is the question.

It depends on density as well. The length will work and probably give a good twist out. For my hair I need a certain number of twirls or twist nodes for my twist out to look good. The larger my twist the fewer nodes in have.

Do a test. Do a regular twist and count the number of twist nodes after letting the twist go. Then when you do her method see if you have enough nodes. If not do 4 per section instead.

Hope that makes sense. I know I can't do 4 sections. I don't even think I can do 6.

Makes perfect sense. Didn't even think of that. Because if I don't have enough nodes I'll just have stretched hair and the style won't look good. I was going to try this weekend but since I'm anxious and impatient and can never wait for anything I'll cowash and try tomorrow.

Eta: oh and I think my regular twist has about 5 or 6 nodes when I unravel the twists but I also do a Bantu knot after I twist and maybe that helps? It definitely helps my definition.

I think I have to have about 30 twists to have 5 or 6 nodes, at least the last time I tried it. I will try again in November. I don't think I will be at 20 twists until I'm closer to APL.

  • Regular scalp massages to help with thickening hair - Don't think I've gotten any closer to this although scalp massages have been more often.
  • Complete decent Bantu knot set in 30-45 minutes (these have been taking me a long time and since I mastered the perm rod set in under an hour thought to give this a shot - could be because I make them too small) - Goal achieved! I can do this. I can do a decent set in about 35 minutes. I've realized I'm just lazy and don't want to be bothered which is why sometimes it takes me longer. Haha Goal achieved!
  • Get hair into a bun without the front and top sticking out. Enough just to smooth with a tiny bit of gel - Almost there. This past weekend I put my hair into a bun while soaking wet in the shower. When I looked in the mirror the top was only sticking up a little. I put some gel and I didn't have to use a hair pin to keep it down. Still have to work on the sides a little more.
  • Stick to the shampoo every other week regimen. My hair doesn't need it every week since I don't use heavy products much anymore - I've totally gone off the rails on this one. I've been using shampoo 'as needed'. I wash often but I feel like I've only used shampoo maybe twice since I last posted in here which would be about right I guess.
- Not sure I will even bother trimming in December. May end up just doing a search and destroy. My ends look pretty decent so far but I remember what not trimming anything at all last time.
Glad I came up with something.

Been about a little over a month so time to update. Updates in bold. Think I've done really well this year.

Came back in here to say my goal of a bun without the tops and sides sticking out has been achieved. I bunned today on damp hair that I spritzed with water. The top and sides didn't stick out at all. I applied gel to smooth the hair and make it look neater but didn't need it really.

I'm still faithfully washing or co cleansing once a week followed by a dc. My hair is retaining moisture and the ends aren't breaking off anymore.

I also stopped sulfur oil. it seemed to cause breakage... Now I'm using Xcel21 and Nioxin. Once my Nioxin is gone I won't repurchase. It's triple the price of Xcel21 and it isn't nearly as big.

Checking in - I've been sporting thicker loose twists for about a month now and with that change have been able to take down and re twist my hair in 4 hours. It's a nice change and I'm enjoying the thicker look

Late for the party!
I have been wearing medi-twists since July of this year (my own hair) as a protective style to retain length. I plan to continue until the end of the year and beyond:

Washing
  • 1-2 times per month with Shea Moisture JBCO or Manuka Honey Shampoo.
Conditioning/Steaming
  • Condition with Elucence MB or Shea Moisture JBCO Leave-In.
  • Steam with the above conditioners or African Royale Braid Spray at least twice per month.
Twist
  • I use Shea Moisture JBCO Leave-in AND the Curl Enhancing Smoothie on each medi-twist.
  • I take down and retwist every two weeks.
Maintenance
  • I use African Royale Braid Spray/JBCO Leave-In/Hair Milk as needed at NIGHT, and then I put on a satin scarf.
  • At night I also braid my twists into two large braids. I like the crinkles and my twists are stretched, last longer and look neater when I do this.
