Any Ill Effects from Using Dabur Amla Hair Oil?

This weekend I tried to use an old staple a bit differently: DAHO as an overnight pre-poo treatment. I was just going to wash it out and DC as normal, but I liked the way my hair felt when I washed out the oil. So because it saves me a lot of time, I've just gone ahead and done my roller set.

Since DAHO's main ingredient is mineral oil, I was wondering if anyone who uses it regularly has seen excessive dryness or any other signs of ill-health on their hair?

I used it as a prepoo was really oily and my hair seemed stronger but maybe a bit hard - had to end up giving myself a really good dc to soften my hair up

Yes, I like this oil as a pre-poo for no more than an hour. If it sits for longer than that, especially overnight, my hair ends up very brittle and dry.

Yep and I thought the opposite would happen - that alma oil would make my hair softer if it stayed on overnight instead it was harder.

I don't know if its different on natural or relax hair but I'm natural and when I sleep with this my hair feels so soft the next day I just add conditioner to my hair and then go rinse it out, I loove dabur amla oil!

Well this is my first time using it. I heavily evenly put on my dry hair, covered it with a shower cap, then a hot turban, covered that with a shower cap, then covered it all with a towel. I know this sounds really extra and it probably is but I thought all the covering would help the hair get moist and absorb the oil better. Please throw in any tips regarding this.

This is my first time doing this so yeah, I don't know what I'm doing lol, but it's almost time to wash this out. I wanna use NTM shampoo and the conditioner for 10 minutes under the dryer, then I guess I'll try Giovani Direct leave in and Vitaka Coconut with water to roller set.

Again all this is new that I'm trying so I hope it goes well, If anybody sees any mistakes here please do let me know. I'll be back to give an update.

i used Amla Oil ONCE doing an overnight baggy/pre-poo. It made my hair feel really hard and crunchy. I also don't care for the fragrance so I am not sure if I will be using it again. Maybe I will try it for only 1-2 hours instead of overnight to see if that gives me better results.

I'm mostly natural (about 1/2" relaxed hair at the ends) and nothing softens my hair like DAHO. Not having to DC after washing is such a time saver. I just don't use it regularly because of worries that the mineral oil will eventually leave my hair dry and crunchy - petrolatum has that effect on me for instance - plus the smell.

For the smell, another member recommended mixing lavendar oil in the bottle. I put about 60 drops in the large bottle of DAHO and now the odor is much more bearable.

i think amla oil is best as a prepoo...i hate mineral oil products on my hair, cuz it keeps my hair from really absorbing adequate moisture...but i will prepoo with amla oil and then clarify before i use my regular shampoo...i tend to still get the softness into my hair, and clarifying gets rid of the mineral oil, so my hair still absorbs moisture well...

i used to use amla oil in my henna mix, and lemme tell you, NEVER AGAIN! i've been using amla POWDER in my mixes recently, and my hair ends up much shinier and darker with it, which is what i wanted! HTH

I used my Dabur Amla oil yesterday as a pre-poo and the results were amazing. I hardly had to use conditioner after shampooing and my rollerset came out so nice. I mix lavender oil in mine, 15 drops made mine smell nice.

I wondered that because lots of folks on the board say their hair is softer and I did notice that they were naturals but I never made the connection until now - the oil must react differently on my relaxed hair

It doesn't make my hair hard, but I do mix the amla oil with castor oil when I prepoo. The mineral oil doesn't seem to bother my hair.

as far as henna goes, i don't think there's anything bad/wrong with using amla oil, but in my experience, the powder is much more potent...i actually straightened my hair for the first time in over a year last week, and did a henna treatment the week before that, and i almost cried...i wish i took pics, cuz my hair was so shiny, like abnormally shiny, and mostly a beautifully rich, deep brown....my roots were red this time, cuz i actually used lemon juice to release the color for the first time, and it was still a rich, brownish red, not a straight up red like i had been fearing .

but yeah, for henna, i say throw some amla powder in your mix and i'm sure you'll LOVE the results!

I order my amla oil from "fromnaturewithlove.com" they infuse their herbs with sesame oil.

This is what their website says:

The Amla fruit, also known as the Indian Gooseberry, comes from a small tree that grows throughout India. The tree is worshipped as Mother Nature due to its nourishing fruit. The fruit is one of the highest natural sources of vitamin C. The Amla fruit yields an extract that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to treat the hair and scalp. It is said to penetrate the scalp and strengthen hair at its root, to stop and reverse abnormal hair loss and to promote stronger, healthier hair growth.

Our Ayurvedic Amla Oil is made by infusing cold pressed sesame oil with amla fruit. It is an excellent conditioner to use as a hot oil treatment. Use amla oil in shampoos, conditioning rinses, hair pomades and oil treatments. It can also be used in combination with Brahmi oil to strengthen the hair and add body.

This might be kinder to your hair. HTH

OMG...all I've been hearing are rave reveiws about Alma oil, so I bought some and used it to seal in moisture after washing...my hair has never been so hard so I've been natural. I had no idea what it was. I'm even afraid to try it in as a prepoo. I thought it might be the prepooing at first, but I had tried it before using coconut oil and my hair LOVED it. *sighs* Anyone want any ALMA oil...full bottle goes to whoever will pay for shipping!

I am in love with this stuff. At the moment, it can do no wrong in my eyes. My other products probably feel like red headeded step children. I'll use it as a pre-poo with no problem. I also use it was my moisturizer. If my hair is feeling dry, I'll spray some in before I go to sleep. I always do the night before because I know some people can't handle the smell...so I give it time to fade. My hair will be soft and easy to manage for several days from one night use..no dry feeling...and the way my hair feels when I wash it is great! I've had no ill effects from leaving it on my hair for long periods of time. Less shedding, better managability, much softer. The only downfall is for other people..the ones who can't take the smell. I happen to love the smell.
