Why when I blowdry my natural hair it gets crunchy and dry? When am I doing wrong? And the worst part is I had to comb thru this mess.

Too much product or protein.

Just keep it to a minimum of a heat protectant, lightly distributed or spritz throughout hair. If you're also flat-ironing go section by section applying a light serum for shine before you flat iron. But keep it to a bare minimum for blowdrying. Just a heat protectant will do.

But I didn't put anything on my hair prior to blowdrying. The only thing I put was a heat protectant.. it seems my hair gets dry and shrink after blowdrying every time. Thanks for the advice. I will consider what you're saying.

Which heat protectant did you use? And what did you do to prep your hair prior to blowdrying and applying the heat protectant? That could make all the difference.

Fantasia heat protectant. The one in the pink bottle. I just co wash my hair and towel dried then put heat protectant over it then blowdried

I had the same problem last year and my sister who is a stylist of 30+ plus years experienced this with my hair too. She said my hair wouldn't straighten on even the highest setting of 400 and when she finished my hair barely looked blown outhe. It was a hot mess.

To fix the issue I hydrated my hair by cutting off damaged hair, drinking more water, I used a hard water treatment on my hair and bought a water shower filter. I also removed products with large amounts of protein in them. I honestly think the hard water in my city was built up on my strands and made water impenetrable and and made my hair stiff and hard. I was spraying tap water on my hair several times a day for two years so my case might have been extreme.

Well you know it's straight up well water out by me! Lol but I had to do the same thing as too. I still haven't replaced my shower filter yet, but I changed my products and cut down the protein.
My hair can tolerate high heat though. I couldn't get the salon look at home, until I cranked up the heat.

But yeah @jennifer30
Your hair wasn't hydrated enough, and don't expect Silky results from the blow dryer alone. My hair would require the blow dryer to be the temperature of hell to get it straight.
My hair starts to revert while I'm still blow drying it. As soon as your dry a small section, you have to twist/braid to keep it stretched.

Yep you sure do, lol. My hair can tolerate high heat as well, the last two were at 360 and 400 degrees and those coils popped right back. I keep doing things to dry my hair out and then wonder why months later. Any style requires hydration to be your primary concern for best results. Eventually I'll remember this long enough to keep a good moisture Balance.

I always got dry brittle blow outs when my hair wasn't moisturized enough. I think you may need to add a layer of a moisturizing leave-in before your heat protectant to lock in that moisture

I agree with PP's sentiments with regard to moisture. However, I believe the key to effective straightening lies in making sure that the hair has been infused with moisture via the DC process. For years, whenever I attempted to straighten the end result was always stiff, crunchy, poufy hair. I tried a host of finishing products and heat protectants to no avail. Things didn't turn around for me until I made three key changes: (1) I gave my hair the most moisture drenched DC possible; (2) I kept my finishing products to a minimum (opting only for a light, thin, creamy leave-in with a light coating of grapeseed oil); and (3) I ditched the serum heat protectants for Tresemme Heat Tamer Spray. After these changes, straightening became a breeze. IME, relying on the finishing products to moisturize the hair is too late and a recipe for failure. It is the DC, and to a lesser extent the pre-poo, that are the central figures in the straightening process. Here's an older thread that I think will be of some benefit to you.

ETA: Another crucial component of straightening is doing it in a the right space, e.g., comfortably seated with ample light, mirrors and entertainment while surrounded by all of the necessary tools and products. Standing in front of a mirror is torture and another recipe for failure.

I would have shampooed with a clarifying shampoo, then deep conditioned. I would have used a light serum for heat protectant like the CHI, Treseme, John Frieda, Mizani, Keratese, or Redken ones. I would have separated my hair in sections and but made sure that my hair was at least 50-60% dry before blowdrying. I would divide each section in multiple subsections and use the tension method.

ETA:
Deep conditioners I would recommend include:
Komaza Supermane
Darcys botanicals Pumpkinseed
Obia naturals babassau dc
TGIN Honey Miracle Hair Mask
Darcys botanicals deep conditioner

There are other quality DCs from Alikay naturals, Shescent It, Curl Junkie, and Camille Rose
