it's free daily since I don't even use product daily but every few days i use some amount on shampoo, conditioner, cuticle sealer, and heat protectant. I'm very heavy handed with shampoo and conditioner.

I'm working on this.

So far I've made the discovery that what I'm thinking is my everyday, not-really-so-up-there-in-cost routine is really like a luxury-junior routine. o_O :(

Results so far:

My best BARE BONES, spend-as-little-as-possible-yet-maintain-my-standards hair routine:

Total cost: About $32.60 for 61 oz.

PRODUCTS (n=4)
When I'm done I'll post the complete results, naming the products under each category and all. (Had to switch out to Wetline Gel to get that bare bones one reasonably priced. Goodness.)

My favourite shampoo and rinse out are cheapies: Herbal Essences Bee Strong

I do own Deep Conditioners but I'm not even sure if they make a difference in my hair. I currently have Mielle Organics Babassu DC and CRN Penetrating Treatment. I'm still experimenting with deep conditioners so I can omit these from the equation.

My favourite oil for rinsing is a cheapie: sunflower oil.

I don't have a cheapie leave-in. I'm currently favouring CRN leave-ins. Any suggestions for a cheap but good OTG leave-in conditioner?

I can use sunflower oil and a cheap grease for sealing. I currenly use Palmer's Coconut Oil Hairdress

As for gel, my favourite is Wetline Xtreme. I like to combine KCCC with it. But I can go with the Wetline alone if needed.

Don't get me wrong though. I'm a mini PJ and I like experimenting. I currently own around 40 products and I'm planning to purchase another 10 :angeldevil:

Girl no I can't  I don't like limiting myself care. I have things that work. If they're cheap, great. If they're pricey Im worth it :yep:

I love that attitude, @halee_J! :yep: That's one reason I included the different types/levels: It's good to know what a bare bones styling day would look like, but right now I'm really investing in myself and my hair, and it is straight lovely to be able to walk over to my hair products cabinet and know that I'm giving my hair what I believe is the absolute best for it . . . and that there's nothing else at the moment that I'd rather have in that cabinet.

I'm loving that right now.

Typing out a bare bones, a good "everyday," and a "luxury" routine has been clarifying for me. I learned that I have no problem with the bare bones one. That's good to know! I also learned precisely what the differences are between what I consider a good but economical routine and a routine wherein I just go in and invest in what I really, really want.

The bare bones routine is peaceful in some ways, but not in others. Same with the luxury routine.

This was difficult! Once I got started, I realized that I have so many routines and they can get pricey because I use a lot of products.

Bare bones $136 -
Just Nutritive Scalp shampoo ($25)
Neem oil ($10)
Giovanni Deep Moisture Conditioner ($6)
Essential oil scalp massage with 6 to 8 oils ($60 to $75)
Aphogee leave in ($6)
Generic Paul Mitchell Super Skinny ($8)
Pro styl gel ($6)

Because I'm transitioning, I can wear a natural hairstyle or a relaxed hairstyle and they both require different routines and products. And don't let my scalp be an issue because that's an added step and more products.

Natural hair style - $193
Just Nutritive Prepoo treatment ($31)
Just Nutritive Scalp Shampoo ($25)
Nairobi Humecta Sil conditioner as an overnight deep conditioner ($10) or Just Nutritive Scalp Conditioner as an overnight ($25)
Giovanni Deep Moisture Conditioner added to Humecta Sil or JN just before rinse ($6)
Essential oils scalp massage ($60 to $75)
Aphogee leave in ($6)
Komaza Vitamin Reign ($12)
Komaza Moisturizing Spray ($12)
Jane Carter's Nourish and Shine ($16)

Relaxed hairstyle - $188
JN Scalp Shampoo ($25)
Neem oil ($10)
Aphogee Protein treatment ($9)
Queen Helen Argan Oil Cholesterol conditioner overnight ($4)
Nairobi Humecta Sil conditioner added just before QH rinse out ($10)
Oils ($60 to $75)
Aphogee leave in ($6)
Komaza Vitamin Reign ($12)
Komaza Moisturizing Spray ($12)
Generic Paul Mitchell Super Skinny ($8)
Nairobi Wrap & Shine ($11)
Razac hairdress ($6)

For scalp issues add an additional $31 for JN prepoo treatment and $25 for the JN Scalp Conditioner to the bare bones and relaxed hair routines. I can't say that I don't consider price because I try to catch sales and BOGO but I definitely don't get a product just because it's cheaper. My sensitive scalp and desire for healthy hair costs me a lot of money in products so a $20 routine is not feasible :cry3:

I'm right there with ya, chica. My bare bones only has 4 products, and there is no way I can get it down to $20, even with skimping and going with a much lesser quality gel.

I'll try to post mine tomorrow. You'll know you have a kindred spirit.

 @ $20 It's just not possible for me.

I'm going to think about this though and attempt to answer lol.
I usually buy a whole line, so $20 would not cut it for me and I do my own hair, if i was going to the salon, I would spend more. I'm not going to go cheap to prove something.
Now being a product junkie is something different, or just not figuring out what products work could be an issue.

Yes. Being cheap just to prove something makes no sense. Agreed. :yep: I don't think it was that serious for the group of vloggers that did the challenge. I think they were just having fun to see what would happen.

I know I was supposed to come back a few days ago, but work has been kicking my butt so I've just been crashing. Most of the prices are estimates.

Bare Bones "I'm Only Here So my Hair Doesn't Fall Off Routine" - This is the routine I did in college so I know it does work, but you don't get to have as much fun with your hair. I probably had to repurchase everything except the shampoo every 2 months. The shampoo would probably last 4-5 months.

Cream of Nature Argan Oil Shampoo -$5
Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Conditioner - $4
Queen Helene Cholesterol - $5
ORS Olive Oil Pac - $2
African Royale BRX Braid Spray - $6
Ampro Curl Enhancing Gel - $2.99
Softee Coconut Oil Grease - $1.59

I would only air dry

Total - $26.58

Every Day Regular Degular Routine - This is basically me for the past 2 years. I have to repurchase products every 3-4 months (well I don't have to purchase products at all because I have a back stock, but that's for another thread)

Mizani Moisturfusion Shampoo - $13
Generic Nexxus Humectress - $6
Silk Elements MegaSilk Treatment - $12
Aphogee 2 Minute Reconstructor - $7.99
It's A 10 Miracle Leave-In -$19.00
Castor Oil - $8
ORS Curl Boosting Jelly - $9.99

For rollersets and straightening

LottaBody Wrap Me Foam - $7.99
John Frieda Frizz Ease - $6.99
ORS Olive Oil Oil Sheen - $1.59

Total - $92.46

Luxurious "Edges Layed for the Gawds" Routine - I technically could do this right now, but the way my pettiness about my haircare budget is set up... At these price points, I'm buying the jumbo size which would last 6-9 months, probably longer on the shampoo and oil.

Kerastase Bain Satin 2 - $41
Paul Mitchell The Detangler - $25
Kerastase Masquintense Fine - $63
Komaza Hair Protein - $15
Alterna Cavier CC Cream - $42
Redken One United Spray - $34
Bumble and Bumble Invisible Hair Oil - $40
DevaCurl Supercream Coconut Styler -$28
Redken Pillow Proof Primer - $24

Total - $312

If you click on each routine, it should enlarge for better viewing.

Summary:
  • Bare Bones Hair Routine: $32.53 for 4 items
  • Good but Economical Hair Routine: $135.07 for 11 items
  • No Holds Barred Hair Routine: $213.27 for 16 items
Going forward I'm hoping to go with the "good, economical" hair routine with the addition of the Pure O.N.E. Beauty Hair Prepoo Mud Mask/Cleanser. I believe that comes to $145.02 for 12 items. I imagine I might need to make these purchase about 4-5 times a year? To splurge, I would invest in the Asha & Miel Edge Genesis ULTRA Oil.

Where do you live where this stuff costs $8? The beauty supply stores and Walmart have it for $4 and under... same with the Softee... unless you're buying a bigger jar it's like $0.88 at Walmart and $1 at the Dollar Tree.

Honestly, I don't know how much I paid for this, that just seemed a good estimate lol. A bottle lasts me about a year so when I run out, I just go to the hair aisle at whatever store and buy it.

I Am So Blessed

I'm easy going.
These are what I used for my whole journey:

Care Free Curl Gold Activator $3.50

Hollywood Beauty Cholesterol $2.50

Cantu Curl Activator Lotion $5.75 At Dollar General.

BlueMagic grease the original $2.25 at Dollar General. (Recently added to my Reggie)

J.R Liggetts shampoo bar $7.00

Sometimes coconut oil.

That's pretty much my whole stash. These are my "ride or die" staples.

Over what period of time? Spending $50/week isn't the same as spending $50 every 2 months. Though that becomes hard to say too, because not all products last equally long. I feel like my products last kind of a long time for me. Also, I don't use the same ones all the time, so the price will change for that reason too. But right now (estimating and excluding shipping):
Shampoo $3
Rinse out conditioner $3
Leave-in $16
Oil $16
Protein $12

So that's $50, which is not too bad. Most of that stuff lasts me 2 months.

There are also other hair related things I occasionally spend money on, but that's probably not what you mean. Like a heat cap, shower caps, and hair accessories. I have very expensive hair accessories.
