I Would Spend More Time On My Hair If It Weren't For...

At this point I don't have one. I used to be relaxed and I would wash it weekly using a variety of moisturizing shampoos, and then I would deep condition with a moisturizing conditioner. I'd use a leave in and either air dry or blow dry. My hair seems to hate oils (especially coconut oil) so I rarely used them.

I tried so many daily moisturizers, but my hair would always end up feeling dry. The products never penetrated into my hair no matter what I did. I even tried to incorporate protein into my hair regimen. I spent so much money on my hair, so I just decided to put individual braids in so I do not have to worry about my hair. :cry3:

I had this problem for a long time. I think I overloaded it with protein. Every once in a while I overdo it with protein. I don't know if this will work for you, but I fix the problem by doing the following:

1. Stopped using any product with coconut oil listed as an ingredient.

2. Snipped 1/8 inch or less of hair. Really just the very tips of my ends.

3. Deep condition with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration conditioner and Pantene Dry Defy. (Feel free to use any other extremely slippery conditioner that does not have protein listed as an ingredient. A very slippery conditioner is needed for this purpose.)

4. Leave -In conditioner applied to 8 twists. I either use KeraCare Natural Textures Leave-In or Paul Mitchell The Conditioner.

5. CRN Moisture milk.

6. Castor oil.

7. a. CRN Almond Jai Twisting Butter or Keracare Natural Textures Butter Cream. b. Brush hair very slowly and gently in short strokes with a denman type. (The Felicia Leatherwood brush is on my wishlist.)

8. Shea butter.

9. a. Vaseline. (I never in a million years would have ever thought that I would use this stuff on my hair again!) b. Brush very gently again in short strokes.

10. Airdry in 8 twists, then style.

I use a healthy dose of products for nos. 3, 4, and 5. Then I use increasingly less product for nos. 6-9. A very light application of vaseline mostly goes on the bottom half of my hair.

I do a mid-week refresh by spraying my hair with water, using the Moisture Milk, then the Twisting Butter or Butter Cream and braiding my hair. I usually don't brush again.

After about 2 to 3 washes (2 to 3 weeks), I switch no. 3 to Kenra Moisturizing Conditioner and keep using it until I feel that my hair is balanced and retaining moisture well.

My hair hates coconut oil, too. My low-poo hair is bsl. I have a lot of hair - it looks thick, but the strands are fragile and break easily. I tend to use a lot of protein, which is why I probably overdo it every once in a while. My hair does better with weight and when I layer my products - basically giving each product a little time to absorb before the next application.

I think the key is sealing in the moisture with shea butter and vaseline, then smoothing it in with the brush.

ETA: I know you said that your hair hates oils... but I wonder if castor oil could work for you. It is a more moisturizing oil.

I will definitely try this when I finally take my braids down. I'm thinking about starting the new year with my hair out. I'll see how it goes. I really appreciate you ladies taking the time out to list what works for you to help me. That makes me feel good. Thank you!

You're welcome. I'm happy to help. The only reason I was able to get through protein overload was because other people helped me out with great advice.
