Straight Naturals

I don't think you posted in the wrong forum, it's the longhaircare forum. :-|

Anyways. I'm transitioning from straight hair, but I was for multiple years. I think the most important things are not 'touching up' a straightened style, not using too much product (yes, you can use too much heat protectant) and conditioning a lot. I would do my hair once a month, keep it straight for two weeks, then wear it natural for two weeks. I'd do a lot of conditioning in between to keep it in good shape. I also trimmed a lot, which sacrificed on length, but my ends were always blunt and thick.

I'd use no more than two products - one heat protectant to blow dry and one serum after flat ironing for shine and to prevent reversion. Oil-based products literally fry the hair, and water-based products boil them.

I preferred it to having a relaxer because I had versatility. I could wear it curly or straight. I've had heat damage before so I definitely know the different - I had 3 years of no heat damage with a perfected regimen. I decided to stop straightening because I want to become familiar with my curls. That's a personal choice. Anyone can do whatever they want with their hair. We've seen plenty of healthy-relaxed heads and unhealthy natural heads, so it's all practice that makes the difference.

There is another thread but it’s so long I find it intimidating.

I think you have to reset your expectations. The only time I have an issue is when I try to touch up my edges or keep a defined part. Heat protectant works but not when you overdue it. Also low manipulation is key. Once the hair is styled how you like get comfortable with pin curls, pineapples, or wrapping. Heat is fine but not every day.

This isn't the wrong forum it's still hair care tips and advice. This is my first post in years but I came to the conclusion that back in the day my presses lasted so long because of grease. (I know it's a no-no) I got my hair done two days ago and greased it and the next day (today) it was so Straight and silky. It's usually puffy by now but I credit adding grease the next day.

What i do: DC like my life depends on it. No retouching after wash day. Take my time with every section. No more than two passes with the iron.

However, I straighten my hair every week and it's pretty healthy and strong for me. My curl patern has definitely changed and it's not as it use to be. That's not a deal breaker to me because I don't care for wearing my hair natural. I still consider my hair to be healthy because it doesn't break off and I retain length. Now it depends on what is your definition of healthy hair is. If maintaining your curl pattern is important, then you better be careful with consistent use of heat.

Is it better than a relaxer? For me yes it is. My natural hair is much more stronger and reselint to stress. My natural hair is thicker and much more healthier. My hair doesn't do well with relaxers and ends up breaking off and getting thin.
