Note To Naturals...

It really is best to detangle your hair at least once a week. I have been really lazy with my hair. I got up this morning and decided to wash my hair. I haven't done anything to my hair except brush it into a ponytail and put a phony bun on it for last three weeks. When I attempted to finger detangle (thank God I didn't hop in and just wash like I usually do) it turned out parts of my hair were beginning to dread. I really have to be more proactive with my hair care--particularly since I am trying to grow it long (it's shoulder length in some sections now--when stretched).

And I'm 3B/3C/4A... if I were 4B/4C I just would have gone ahead and big chopped!

Have you all been naturals long? I love doing my hair and wash and go at least once a week sometimes more. I wonder if after time I will become bored with my hair.

Definitely bunning your hair loose without detangling is the devil. You get a false confidence that it's fine since the hair is a bit stretched, but the hair at your nape is slowly matting/"building up"...yeah been there done that many of times lol

If you ever want to be lazy with your hair it definitely helps if your hair is sectioned and braided/twisted/etc, it really cuts down on tangling

Maybe, maybe not. I've been natural for about eight years now. My sister is a serial wash n go'er and has been for yeaaaaars. Me on the other hand, I started off with only protective styles like twists and braids with my own hair, then twist outs and braidouts, then rollers sets like curlformers and ryler stylers, and recently I've had my hair straightened on and off for the past few years for ease when I'm overseas (with "natural hair" styling in between presses).

I did really wanna experience my hair after being super strict but now it's definitely about being able to maintain it in a style when I'm really busy and can't baby it like I would like to. So I think it mostly depends on your mood, what you're able to do at the time and your styling preference.

Actually this is my fourth time as a natural. This time, my hair fell out because of the chemo treatments for breast cancer and I decided to remain natural because I didn't want to put caustic chemicals on my scalp. The problem this time is that I still don't have my pre-cancer energy levels back so my hair is suffering!

Actually, the part at my crown was the worse part because that's the 4A part... the part in the back was easiest because that was the 3B part! If you can imagine semi-straight hair surrounding a big tangled mess in the middle!

Yes! The worst knots I ever had was after bunning loose hair. The experience was so bad that to this day bunning is something I will not do with loose hair.

Timely thread as I have been pulling my hair into a twist out puff all week. I guess I’m detangling tonight before things get really interesting.

This is so true. I went two weeks once, just plaited bun... Everyday I would just spritz with water, brush and roll the plait right back up. My hair tangled so bad when I finally decided to wash. With mine, I have to detangle twice a week because shed hairs will rack up a serious knot in the back of my head.

Good post!

YES. I had my detangling session last night. I couldn’t go another day without detangling my hair
Lesson learned. Thank goodness, I was patient and used Knot Today. My poor crown. But I managed to not break off any hairs. But those shed hairs were like, oh we doing dreds again? Ok

When I was comb detangling my hair I could go weeks and weeks and weeks but not anymore.
My hair is so tangled and matted...smh I lose so much hair.
Maybe I should start comb detangling again.

Hugs to you on your recovery. I have a best friend who is going through the same thing now and like you, she says that she feels tired all of the time.

This is exactly why I can't do any long term protective styling. 4 weeks is my max, maybe 5 if I'm really diligent, but there is so much matting potential it's not worth it. Every-time, it never fails, I have to extensively and carefully get the shed strands out. My hair is too fine to be detangling multiple times a week, but definitely 1x a week before wash day.

I pray you’re ok :bighug:

Singin’ the praises of the baggy method
I detangle and wash my hair every 3 weeks. I keep my hair in 8 - 12 braids or twists(with my own hair) for weeks at a time. This has been my routine since September 2016. I also only finger detangle. Keeping the hair stretched AND sectioned is pivotal.
