Update On Thinning Edges

This is a mini update on my edges which were destroyed due to braids and a faux loc installer who was high.. SMH. The pics are 30 days apart. Initially, I did not feel and pulling or anything tight when my braids were being installed. She actually had a very gentle hand and the braids were light, not heaving and pulling on my scalp. I have no idea why my edges reacted the way they did. This is one instance where I do not blame the braider. Now the locs, which I usually do myself, were done by a braider who kept taking brakes and going out to smoke. I did not know what she was doing at first and by the time I realized it, she was halfway through. It took her 8 hours to do what I was told would take only 4. They were okay but I like the ones that I do myself better. I had a significant amount of hair come out due to that install. I usually keep my locs in for 8-12 weeks but I took them out after 6 weeks. I installed boho locs, which are very lightweight and so unique and I have gotten great growth. I micro needled my edges and the crown of my head 4 weeks ago and use different oils to massage in daily. I am FINALLY seeing some progress. I plan on microneedling every 4 weeks. I usually sleep on a satin pillow case ( if anything).

Things that have helped:
Micro needling
I began putting JBCO on my hairline and styling my “baby hairs” at night then tying up my edges so they don’t rub against my pillowcase and exacerbate the thinning and I don’t have to use a bunch of edge control in the morning.

I use Kaleidoscope miracle drops in the morning after I wash my face so I don’t wash off the oil around my hairline

I do still use edge control but I wash it out of my hairline daily. I will either “melt” it away with warm water or I will wash and condition my hairline. I feel like the oils can penetrate my scalp better vs sitting on the edge control.

I deep condition my edges. Even though the rest of my hair is in faux locs, I still wash and deep condition my hairline.

I take my vitamins, I recently added liquid Vitamin D and liquid iron.

I wear my locs down more so I am not adding stress on my edges.

I know that some would say that I should stay out of PS’s but that is not going to happen. I WILL stop going to other people to do my PS because that seems to be when I get my a$$ in a slinger and my hair gets messed up, primarily my edges. Also, when I was wearing my hair out, my edges were only slightly better.

What size needle do you use to micro needle ?
My edges have been looking like struggle lately and I want to be proactive

I have a dermapen and I adjust it to about 1.5 on my edges and between 1.5 -2 on the top. I got the dermapen from amazon as well as the refill carteidges. I put an oil that is penetrating immediately afterwards. The channels the dermapen creates channels that increases absorption.

I also use the dermapen on stretch marks. I’ve gotten rid of stretch marks from weight gain (thanks birth control) as well as 20+ year old stretch marks from putting on muscle as a sprinter when I was in high school. I also use it on my face and around my eyes. It helps tremendously!!!! You have to be careful about being in the sun for about 2 weeks though.

This is a pic right after I did the dermapen pen tonight (on the right) as compared to 4 weeks ago.

PS May 2017-???
Thank you! I am happy to be seeing some real progress. My goal is to be able to be comfortably pulling my hair up into a high ponytail or a big puff without feeling uncomfortable and selfconscoius about thinned edges.

I know, right?!

Excellent progress!

Can you post photos of your boho locs, too? I just got my tracking number and I'm so excited.

No problem! I installed them for my trip to Costa Rica (hence the vacation pics). I LOVE THEM. I will post more pic of the new boho locs I just installed.

Thank you so much @Gr8ness83! They look great.

I've been looking for someone to install my boholocs for several days now. I wanted to have individual crochet but I couldn't get my hair in the loc. I may revisit the style in August so I can keep it looking fresh if I do the cornrow method. I need a style that will last two months. :(

Yeah, with longer hair you’ll have to do crochet. Unless you braid your hair then fold it in half. You’ll have to wrap your ends around the shaft of your braid. (I would use braiding hair for that). I can’t wait to have that problem!

how do you like the Kaleidoscope miracle drops so far?
the oil is light with a tingling effect. I have not noticed th crazy growth that is advertised. Idk if I’ll be repurchasing it. Not because I haven’t seen the crazy growth but because it’s very expensive. I’ll wait to make that decision until I finish the entire bottle.

I have my edges slicked back with Mega Tek to compare the same area with the hair going in the same direction. I just washed my edge control out and now I’m doing Mega Tek overnight looking at how my edges were in January as compared to now.... HOW did I allow them to get to that???‍♀️♀️ They are growing back. I think another year and they will be what they once were. Just have to be patient.

Wow great progress. I just posted about the issues with my edges/hairline which I believe are inherited but I’d micro needling could help I’ll consider that too! I’m taking Nutrafol these days….
