July 2018: Hits & Misses

On break
Almost was a hit but was returned:

Shea Moisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Daily Hydration Gel

Day 1 was nice. However, the hold turned out to be too light for my dense, fine, natural, 4a, cottony hair: Day 2 was not good.

I'm thinking this gel might be great for low density hair or type 3 hair, but I'm not sure.

S-Curl

Really wanted to like it, remembered liking it back in the day, but now it just makes my hair feel sticky and crispy, and I'd better not use it while my hair is wet because when it drips onto my skin I also feel sticky to the touch. :nono:

Hit:
Malibu Chelating Treatment

If I haven't said it before, this stuff is freaking miraculous not only for mineral build-up, but for cones as well (which are technically a mineral, I think, so actually that makes sense). Definitely going to have this around for monthly/as needed.

Hit:
Giovanni leave-in Conditioner:
Only store-bought leave-in that works in my hair. Period.

Hit: Sealing hair with cocoa butter mixed with oils (as opposed to shea butter)

Rinses out with a cowash, but definitely makes a more effective seal than plain oil. My hair clumps back in curls right after rinsing, where waxes make it shrink into nothingness as it can never get moisture back into it and must be clarified. Hope its good enough to use in the winter too.... plus I smell like dark chocolate :lick:

HIT:

Follicle Care Cayena Wood DC - very strengthening and stopped breakage in it's tracks plus it's great at restoring pH balance after a henna color.

MISS:

Alfaparf Hair and Scalp Fiber Restorer - left my hair feeling really hard and stripped of moisture. I hated it so much, I threw it in the trash.

When do you put this on before or after styling?

Miss turned Hit:

Mielle Organics Pomegranate & Honey Curling Custard - At first, I thought this was way too sticky (has to be the honey) but I realized that I was far too heavy handed.

When I tried it again, I used less of it and while it may have been sticky immediately after applying, it dried nice and soft without the stickiness. Plus it gives my hair some super soft, nicely defined curls. I love it now.

I will get more of this during their next big sale along with the Babassu Mint DC. I love this one too.

Obia Naturals Curl Enhancing Custard

My twistouts didn't even last one week. Very weak hold even though it contains carbomer. I used this twice last month, and I gave it one last try this month.

I just found my receipt. Thank goodness for Sally's return policy. It's going back.

Jakeala (Etsy) Beau Vert DC
I think I might have marked this as a miss before, but I used it in the shower. This time I used it with heat (plastic cap + hot head) and oh my goodness it was pretty good. It wasn't too greasy, which is a no for my hair, but my curls looked so happy after I rinsed it out.

I'm using the matching scalp oil and my scalp is TINGLING. I just hate the slow shipping. She lives like 20 min from my parents and takes 3 weeks to ship. Come on girl, if it's that hard I'll just drive down and get it.

Curl Enhancing Smoothie

The slip in these two items are bananas. Ive used the cowash around 2-3 times and its the same every time. Its so slippery, I keep adding more....I cant help it. I don't see the smoothie working in the fall/winter time but its very nice now. Not a hold in sight though when its humid out. I'd be interested in the other items if I catch them on a sale somewhere.

I take it back. My hair STILL smells like cake. The cake smell gave me a hard time sleeping. It's a nice smell, but it's loud, angry and aggressive and I don't want to smell cake anymore. -5 stars.
