do you still notice msm loosening your hair texture after over a year of slide?

Which brand has helped you reach these results.

PS May 2017-???
I wouldn't say it's loosened my curl pattern but the texture is definitely different - it's now silky, whereas before I started MSM it was coarse. It's so much silkier now that I've started reducing my dose from 3000mg every day to every other day. I use Doctor's Best.

@larry3344 what has been your experience with msm?
I haven't taken it since 2005...i don't remember the results
It soften my hair and I want to go back to use it consistently because my texture has turned very coarse and unimaginable.

The thing is I wanted to make sure the effects are longterm and the time it takes to kick in as well as the brands that the ladies have had the best result. @LonDone

I've been taking it the last 18 months or so but honestly I don't think it has changed my texture to be honest. Maybe I don't take high enough a dose. I only take 2000 mg per day, anymore and it messes with my menstrual cycle.

I took MSM for a couple of months in 2010 and then slacked off. It did make my curl pattern a bit more defined but less tang-ly..so more manageable and easier to comb.
I've just started MSM again last week for knee pain so I'm looking forward to the hair benefits.

I was using the Holland and Barrett brand. But they were a chore to swallow and I hated that.

Now that I've started again, I've switched to powder from Amazon (Vegavero) which is apparently purer and easier to take and I feel it working already. I've also started on a VERY low dosage. I started a few days ago and I already noticed my baby hair laying down a bit better

@larry3344 - I started using it in summer 2014. I used it daily the first two years 2014-2016, then probably 4 days a week the last two years.

It started working visibly on my skin first (anti-aging effect!), and took probably 9 months before I noticed the texture changed. There's less bulk at the roots of my braids, which I've been doing for 20 years so that was easy to notice. Even though I'm not relaxed it's like having soft silky new growth.

I'm not overly happy with the hair change so I'm reducing my dosage but apparently it helps extend the anagen (growth) phase and it really does keep you looking younger!

Ps. Doctors Best is the brand I've always taken bc they're available in a gelatin Capsule which are SO much easier to take than the horrid horse Tablets.

Pps lol - I went out and bought a bulk bag of crystals bc it's about $6 for a kilo, and that stuff tastes sooo bitter my gosh it's nasty! Not sure what the powder tastes like @debbiedee ?

I bought the doctors brand and add it to my morning tea, coffee or smoothie. I may not be using enough and it’s been about two months. The doctors beand is the powder and it comes with a scooper.

The poster above said it took about 9 months to start noticing a difference in her roots.

Does taking MSM affect the whole length of your strands or just your new growth? I never start an MSM regimen because I'm thinking, "I've got 4 years' worth of hair that will remain unaffected by MSM."

I take a tablespoon of Kala Health MSM Pure Coarse Powder Flakes daily. I either mix it with crystal light (the no artificial ingredients version) and cold water or warm lemon water. I've been taking it for about two years. My skin is clear and smooth (a first time ever thing for me), joints don't ache anymore, and I can easily stretch my relaxers. My hair is thicker. My crown, two years ago, was coarse and broken; it eventually all came out. I attribute the restoration, it's at least five or six inches and thick, to MSM, Viviscal, and BioSil. I plan to always take MSM. Before I purchased it, I researched the product, i.e. articles on the Internet, bought a book. The flakes are bitter, but for me, the benefits outweigh the bitter taste.

Awesome ladies. I have kala health and right now I am taking sunfood msm. I plan on taking indefinitely too. It’s the only thing that has dealt with the coarseness of my hair.

I have been taking the MSM and incorporated Vitamin E with orange juice. I plan on incorporating Silica, hair vitamin, and fish oil later. I have been taking it daily so far. Of course I know it will take several months to see change.

Also need to up my water intake. My problem is consistency, if I dont see results I get discouraged. I have since done the keratin treatment to smooth out my hair. I am hoping to give my hair enough time to adjust with the MSM so that I can see the softening.

Its the only thing that has ever worked for me, wish I had kept up with it all these years. oh well!!!

Update: I finish my sunfood msm I am on the next bottle it’s a different brand called prairie naturals. Continued to take the vitamin e capsule. Two weeks in and I have noticeable new growth. It feels a little softer but hard to tell. Will keep updating until I reach 1 year mark and do a comparison.

I used MSM early in my hair journey when I was working diligently to fill in bald spots and regrow edges ravaged by 30 yrs of relaxers and inadequate haircare.
MSM in conjunction with hyaluronic acid and essential oil treatments did the job! I need to get back to that.

This too is my problem. Crown hair loss due to medications wrecked havoc to my body. Were you applying the hyaluronic acid directly to scalp? Ps share your regimen. Thanks

I believe meds & vitamins work best from.the inside out so I was taking MSM & hyaluronic acid in pill form.
The essential oil treatment (also dubbed The Hayes Treatment) was topical and applied everyday while I was in braids or twists.

I am started to think the problem is internal. I have issue with low iron and apparently it can be the cause of brittle hair. I am doing my research to build a meal plan and incorporate hair vitamins that I am already taking to solve this problem once and for all. I am also going to go to a doctor for a thorough check-up.

So far my research has told me: low iron, protein, low vitamin c, zinc, selenium, copper and omega/fat as well as low water intake can all cause weak and brittle hair.

So I am going to start by building a meal plan that I will rich foods in all the aforementioned vitamins. In addition to the vitamin e and msm I am taking.

Is the msm you are using combined with chondroitin and glucosamine Sulfate or is it pure msm? How much msm is in the capsule? Thanks in advance.
  • OptiMSM® (methylsulfonylmethane)with Chondroitin & Glucosamine sulfate
  • Or just
  • OptiMsM

In the past I took Ultra Botanicals and several years ago I recall confirming it had the OptiMSM certification. I preferred it over other brands due to the high content of MSM per scoop (4gr). ~2 years ago I switched to Dr's Best and Jarrows . Ultra Botanicals is now Emerald and I don't see an OptiMSM label on the container. Also, it's not listed on the list of OptiMSM retailers

Just a reminder: It is recommended to take Vitamin C with MSM so that the body can absorb the MSM. I know it's posted on the forum in one of the older MSM threads
https://longhaircareforum.com/threads/vitamin-c-and-msm.53824/

And @larry3344 you have to drink plenty of water when taking MSM. Also, you're right - iron deficiency can cause dry brittle hair and hair loss. There is information on it in the Hair Loss sub-forum.

Thanks for sharing this list @ilong. I take the Jarrow Formulas brand
