Weave/ Sew In 101

I’m getting a sew in for the first time. I’ve seen the stylist’s work on line. She states she is into healthy hair and growing hair.

I have no idea what type of hair to buy.

A girl at work told me to get 7a or greater.

What’s the average price of the hair?

What’s the difference between Peruvian, Malaysian, Brazilian

I want a shoulder length bob. How many bundles will I need?

How do I care for hair underneath? Is it similar to taking care of braids? What type of products do you use?

What’s our regimen? Success and fails?

Can I wash my hair or let the stylists do the maintenance?

What’s up with reusing hair?

I want to ask my girls before I go to the stylist looking stupid.

Does the stylist have an IG?

You want her to lap the tracks not cut the tracks to be able to reuse the hair.

Are you getting a closure, a frontal, or a leave out? That will make a difference on the maintenance.

I don't have many tips for a good regimen for while in the sew-in since it's not my norm. I've had less than 4 sew-ins probably.

I’m leaning toward leave out. A girl was telling me you can’t get to your scalp with a closure

-Hair types don't actually mean anything since there isn't an actual standard but always get the highest quality possible.
What’s the average price of the hair?
-That really depends if the hair is bought directly from overseas (China India, Vietnam or Cambodia) or bought from an American vendor. The range could be $30 per bundle to up to $300 per bundle.

What’s the difference between Peruvian, Malaysian, Brazilian
-Absolutely nothing. Peruvian, Malaysian and Brazilian are just processed Chinese hair or Chinese and Indian mixed processed hair.

I want a shoulder length bob. How many bundles will I need?
-just buy 3 just to be on the safe side but normally 2 should suffice. The shorter the hair longer the weft (track) and vice versa.

How do I care for hair underneath?
- Applicators bottles will be your friends.
Is it similar to taking care of braids?
-Very similar
What type of products do you use?
-braid spray or spray leave in conditioners

What’s our regimen? Success and fails?
-Prep your hair by doing shampoo and deep conditioning. For removal please have someone take down for you (if the person wears glasses make sure he/she does or a braid maybe snipped off...personal experience)

Can I wash my hair or let the stylists do the maintenance?
- For your first sew in, have the stylists wash and conditioned your hair. After that, if you feel comfortable you could do it yourself. Make sure your braids are completely dry or mildew might happen.

What’s up with reusing hair?
-If the quality is good/great, the hair will be reusable. I have hair that I have resused for years.

Hopefully I have answered your questions.

@ms.blue thank you so much!

I would have never known. Different websites waxing poetic about Malaysian vs Peruvian vs Brazilian.

What’s your opinion on closure vs leave out?

When I wear a weave, I usually have leave out but I tend to use very coarse, yaki or kinky straight hair so blending is a breeze. Only time I use closures is when I'm wearing a wig since I tend use hair that is silkier (not a real word) or a vastly different hair color.

Personally both leave out and closures have their pros and cons.
Leave out Pro: more natural scalp look
Leave out Con: Risk of heat and mechanical damage.

Closure Pro: All hair is protected, able to use hair that is different texture and color.
Closure Con: Not the most natural look, can cause some damage to the hairline and regular upkeep can be costly.

HTH!
