I Accidentally Cut My Hair!!! Whip Length To Neck Length (pics)

I cannot believe it happened. I still don't even know which snips did it. Yes plural. It happened at least twice.

I installed goddess locs myself for the first time about 8 weeks ago. I'd been planning to take them down for at least the last two weeks but I was too busy. I finally started Sunday night. It was taking a lot longer than I expected. I ended up staying home yesterday and working on it all day.

When I got to the final section on the front left side it happened. I didn't realize until the loc was out and I went to finger detangle like I had done countless times before and the section was now neck length stretched instead of whip length. I searched the trash and found a long twist of my hair and another shorter twist that had been cut... when? I don't know. The second one had to be a different section. What the H was I doing?!?!

Needless to say I was pissed and sad. I texted my people about it. They couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe it. Never did I think it would happen again... but it did. A few locs later i looked and I had another short section. This time was potentially worse. It was longer at about shoulder length stretched but it was closer to the outside so more visible.

I really enjoyed this style and I already bought hair for the next time. I was planning to re-do it right away then decided I'd wait a couple months. But after this I've lost all confidence in my DIY skills with this style. Especially since I still can't pinpoint exactly when/how I did it.

At this point it is what it is. I had to come tell my nikos cousins about it. I can only hope the short sections blend in easily that I forget they're even there for my curly and flat ironed styles. I'll keep you posted.

Wow, so sorry this happened. I’m not really familiar with how these are removed, so I can’t give any insight as to what went wrong. Hopefully you have a lot of hair and those spots will just blend in. I’ve have my hair break off in sections down to a few inches, due to neglect. But I have so much hair, it really didn’t make any impact as far as esthetics.

I'm sorry this happened. I know it's hard, but try not to be too upset. Stress will make it worse.

I accidentally cut off a couple of my Sisterlocks several years ago and as upsetting as it was each time, I had to tell myself not to dwell on it. I had over 300 locks so it didn't matter at the end of the day. My hair still looked the same.

You'll bounce back from this setback in no time. I hope you can conceal the shorter hair and it blends in well while it's growing back out.

Thanks ladies for the support! I'm getting more used to the reality of it now. In three to four years it'll be like it never happened. Lol. I'm wearing a bun today and it's laying down just fine so I think I'll be okay. I'm glad to hear your setbacks weren't too bad either. Although different I think most of us go through some kind of setback in this journey. All we can do is learn from it and keep it moving.

Glad protective styling still works
for the shorter hair. It is possible to lose confidence after a setback.

I keep talking about how I butchered my hair in 2012. I went from below waist length to above bra strap and it was still crooked. ALL my length was gone. You have the majority of your length and that's a good thing!

I'm sorry to hear about this!! Thanks for sharing your story because I have faux locs in now so I know to be extra careful when I remove them.

I did cut some of my own hair before, but it was a little piece compared to how you described your ordeal. It happened a year and a half ago. It's in the back of my head and easy to hide.

ETA: your hair is still beautiful and long. But I feel your pain.

Oh no! I hadn't heard about your 2012 experience. What happened? Was it a self trim turned cut? Like I said most of us go through something on this healthy hair care journey. Come to think of it I've been through a few things I just did not see this coming.

PTHD! Lol! That's a great way to describe it. I've just about made it through all 7 stages of grief and I'm at acceptance. Thanks for the chuckle and the hugs.

For what it's worth I think I have an idea of what happened.

From what I learned on YouTube you typically braid your hair first and usually with extensions. Because of my length I decided to braid my roots and twist my hair with no extensions added. However a braid is stiffer and easier to distinguish. In my case once I started unraveling the marley hair my twist sometimes loosened also. Unfortunately in my misguided haste I would cut the marley hair throughout the takedown so it would be less bulky and "easier" to pull the remaining marley hair out from the root (I crocheted it in at the root). Well in doing that I cut my loosened twist instead of the marley hair. I hope that makes sense.

I was overconfident and hasty with the scissors. I don't know if or when I'll ever do the style again but if I do the lessons learned are only cut at the bottom or if it's tangled higher up and I'm forced to cut it. And slow down! And maybe add a little bit of hair and braid it all the way down. I don't know though because braiding and unbraiding may add too much time on the install and takedown. See my mind still ain't right about this! Protecting my hair is more important than saving time! Learn from me y'all. Lol.

I did this almost exactly a couple months ago. It was one pn the left side, one right in my centre part and one in the middle. Its not too obvious anymore as I just sleek into a bun.

Next time I just got dh to help instead of doing it myself

Had I not butchered my hair, I would have never tried or been open to try Shea butter. During my hair journey back to my longer length, I have discovered the most magical ingredient for afro textured hair. That would be Shea butter! No setback= No discovery.

Because of Shea butter, my hair is the longest I have ever seen it in my life. So, that means your comeback too shall be monumental!

Let me pull up and see and get ready to watch you top that already magnificent hair you have, with something even more fabulous. Can somebody say, "Ya'll Special K figured out how to grow feet-length hair. Remember that time she had them Marley braids...? Well because of that her hair feets are literally at her feet."

Yes, it's so easy to do if you're not careful. Enlisting the help of someone trusted is the way to go if you can.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of my comeback. I too am trying to reach uncharted lengths for me. I hope Shea butter can get me there too.
