Hello Ladies,

I have been pondering what is the best way to detangle natural hair. I have tried different ways but I feel like I have not perfected it.

Please tell/share with us what you have learn over the years.

Sidenote: I'm currently pre detangling my hair with conditioner/shea butter. I plan to mist my hair with warm water this weekend to see if that makes it even better. Also I saw a lady recommend a warm oil pretreatment on dry hair to detangle. Anyway Please share!!!

I use to detangle with just warm water and any detangler. As I reached new length milestones, detangling became a lot more complicated. Now I use warm water with a moisturizing conditioner or a hot oil rinse.

I actually detangle with my detangling shampoo and a wide tooth comb, design essentials almond and avocado-it’s really great :yep: I’ll also sometimes use a modified denman on my deep conditioner. however, i think it’s also important to note that I primarily keep my hair stretched, so the shampoo doesn’t have much work to do anyways.

I only detangle once during wash day, in the shower with conditioner and my fingers from roots to ends. Every 2-3 months I'll use a comb I got from Sally's that has 3 rows of teeth after finger detangling. Then I flip my head upside down, run my fingers through from roots to ends then gather all my hair and twist into a bun to prevent retangling while I shower.

Thanks for these responses Ladies! I think I'm about to try the warm oil trick or maybe the warm water/conditioner with my finger detangling method. Do y'all put the warm oil on dry hair and detangle before the shampoo?

The warm oil seem to work pretty good. Next week I'm going to try 1/2 cup of oil mixed with 1/2 cup of coconut vinegar. I will report back to see if that maybe even better way to finger detangle. Thanks again for all the responses.

good thread.

Do you think tangle hair a result of extreme dry hair?
I'm not sure but I have heard people say this is the reason. I remember Dickie from hair rules making a similar statement. He said something like if we would let water hit our heads more often we won't have the drama on wash days. Plus he thinks that women who do this have less split ends.

I do oil rinses as well as keeping my hair saturated with conditioner and grease 24/7. I hope that it still works as well as my hair gets longer. I don't think I will ever let my hair grow any longer than APL which should translate to chin length with shrinkage.

I think extremely dry hair can lead to or worsen tangles. Other things cause tangles as well such as:

Styling techniques
Shampoo techniques
Smaller curl sizes increase the hairs affinity for tangling
Having hair strands that mingle instead of clumping from root to tip
Uneven ends
Damaged hair
Changes in curl pattern mid shaft ( heat damage or relaxer)
Hair being pushed from tip to root during the day or night.

There is no board.
Acv water spray to moisten the hair then olive oil. Detangle and separate with fingers to remove shed hair and knots. Hop in shower then finger detangle again. Hair will be softer at this point. I do use a wide toothed comb and detangle again bottom up under the stream of water.

I have detangled my hair in pretty much every possible way in relaxed, texlaxed, to natural hair. I can honestly say, the best detangling method on 2+ week old hair came from:

Spray my hair with (Natty Naturals ACV Mist) or just use diluted ACV to help section my hair off using my fingers.

Clip each section out the way (6 in total) and saturate using Belle Bar "Cairo" or you can saturate your hair using pure aloe vera gel. That mucilage you get from Cairo or Aloe Vera, Marshmallow Root, etc creates that slippage to get those tangles and shedded hair right out.

Apple cider vinegar (50/50 mix but some do more water and less acv) is THE best detangler ever. EVER.
Better than oil.
Better than commercial detangler.
Mix in a spray bottle and the tangles will melt away. If you can let it sit for a few minutes even better, bbut I rarely have time for that and it still works like a charm.

I detangle my hair in about six sections. I mist with warm water then apply a mixture of rinse out conditioner (Daily Defense Tender Apple—I’ll be so sad when my stash runs out) and safflower/olive oil. I finger detangle followed by a wide tooth comb, then my detangling brush (knockoff Felicia Leatherwood). I do this only as a prepoo on wash day which is about every two weeks. I’ve been trying Traycee’s technique lately and like it.

Aloe vera gel from the leaf and finger on combing also works for me.
I'll try the acv/h2o mix next wash

That's the worst kind of tangle, I call it hair webbing. Results in breakage.
Almost like a dred lock

This was a good video...it took me a while to realized this method worked best for me.
