Possibly Controversial? Why I Don't Moisturize My Hair

Soaring Eagle

Singin’ the praises of the baggy method
" I actually think that moisturizing creates more damage to our natural hair, and I also think that a lot of people promote moisturizing of our natural hair for 'aesthetic reasons' because they have noticed that our hair becomes softer and less kinky when it is moisturized. We still live in a society where a lot of people think that the kinkier the hair, the less professional and beautiful it looks. So a lot of people moisturize their kinky hair to be considered 'more acceptable' in this society."

Any Thoughts?

It seems to be working for her, but if I did that, poor Sybil would be screaming for mercy. My scalp does not like to be too dry, and it gets itchy and slightly crunchy if it is too dry. Also, I need more than just oil on my hair.

Additional thoughts: She said she didn’t want to create a dependency on water to make her hair soft because she knew she was gonna get tired of that...I’m an organic being and even flowers need to be watered
~Um, some of us like the softness we get from moisturizing. My dry hair stabs me in the scalp and it’s easier for my shed hair to get loose from the rest of my hair, because my hair really just wants to be a knot. Nothing but knots=low to no length retention. It’s not really for aesthetic reasons.
~You can get hygral fatigue from moisturizing your hair? Over moisturizing, yeah, because you’re never letting your hair dry. Never moisturizing? Don’t think so. Never heard of that.
~I live where it’s cold 9 months of the year as well, but I’m not going outside without covering my head. Therefore there’s no risk of frozen, snapped off hair.
~I can’t say for certain if the hair typing system is racist, but it does help for having a frame of reference.

I must say her viewpoints are very interesting

She has gorgeous hair but no, I don’t agree with not moisturizing our hair. Personally my hair can get dry and if I didn’t moisturize it, It would just be a brittle mess.

I believe if you’re able to get your hairs mouisture level on point, then that would eliminate the need to have to mouisturize more frequently.

Yep, it creates knots for me if I spray my hair with water daily. It's fine if I'm in box braids, but if I'm just in my dutch braids it's unnecessary. I keep the hair sealed, and reapply a cream (one that won't revert my hair) every few days. That's seemed to be better for my hair than when I would add water every day.

Mmmm. She's not practicing what she preaches, so *insert eye roll here*.
What's less socially acceptable than unmoisturized kinky hair??
*short kinky hair
*shrunken kinky hair
*uncombed kinky hair
*unwashed kinky hair

Hmmm. . . well that's interesting when she wears her hair in a way that most would consider the most acceptable and desirable way to wear kinky hair.
She said moisturizing isn't natural, but neither is wearing your hair only in a stretched out state. She also uses the green house method but claims it's doesn't count because of the root meaning of the words moisturize and hydrate LOL!!! Nah girl, you're reaching :goodone:

This morning I woke up on hair that I had spritzed with AVJ and added a little bit of CO too. My hair is completely unstretched and in a much more natural state then hers is. I would bet money that the reason she avoids water and moisturizing is because it would cause her basically straightened hair to revert into it's actually natural state.

I cant imagine not moisturizing. She breaks she snaps and is generally unhappy without regular exposure to the ultimate moisturizer WATER.
She is projecting her feelings and emotions about her own hair onto the masses. You gotta know better to do better though.
How you live in a cold climate and dont moisturize?
Moisturized afro textured hair is so beautiful th she talm bout? Its soft, shiny, sheeny, lustrous and so many other adjectives I just cant right now cause her video made me wanna go DC & love on my hair.

I HATE one size fits all. I love that it is working for you but one success does not make you an expert. Woosah!
My best friends hair does not need to be moisturized. My hair could be moisturized daily.

Even if I DC and LOC I can make it 3 days before I have to moisturize. My hair is just dry and my end snap like its their job.

I took her point of saying that she gets knots when her hair shrinks up from the water, as an admission of this.

That's true and also why most naturals moisturize their hair. Because if they don't, then their hair more prone to getting knots. That's why her video is bogus LOL!! It's acceptable for her to maintain her hair in a way that makes it easier, but she's slick trying to guilt out of doing the same.

 People can’t ever just quietly do what works for them, without trying to pathologize the actions of people who do it differently.

Hair is dead. Everything we do to it is to preserve it. It can never regenerate itself, like skin. Keeping her hair streatched is her way of preserving her hair. I hardly ever stretch my hair, so I need some way to keep my hair pliable and to help my strands play nicely with one another— something she achieves by stretching out her natural kinks/coils. Simple.

Also, our hair was created to keep our heads warm and protected. It wasn’t made to be beautiful, necessarily. So the idea that we have to accept our hair exactly as it grows out of our scalps, is ridiculous to me. In modern society, no one does this. Nearly everyone, not just people with kinky hair, alters their hair in some form to look presentable, to look modern. So I rebuke some of these naturals who seem to be trying to force us back into the Paleolithic age, under the guise of self acceptance.

Interesting! Why does she imply that dry is the natural state of our hair and we should not alter this by applying water? Water is a "natural" product, just like the other products that she uses in her hair, that invariably also change the "natural" condition and shape of her hair. She says that she washes and detangles and sets her hair for styles. If that is not chasing aesthetics then what is? She shouldn't shame people for wanting their hair to look beautiful, tidy and neat. Almost nobody lives life absolutely au naturel. We all do what we think make us more beautiful and acceptable to ourselves and to others. We bathe, we shave, we clip our nails, we paint our lips, we use deodorant, etc etc. People with non-kinky hair also wash, condition, and moisturise, and avoid dryness. They also curl their hair, braid it up, create styles. I wonder if she would try to shame them too.

Moreover she says that people moisturise their hair to make it less kinky yet she says that water makes her hair shrink i.e. it makes it more kinky. Does she want more or less kinkiness?

I didn't even think about all of this. Yeah I guess since she keeps her hair stretched she wouldn't want water touching it, so it is a little hypocritic. I keep my hair stretched too.... yes it's for aesthetic as much as it is to prevent knots... so I don't understand her saying the opposite is for aesthetic :S

She says that water makes her hair drier so basically she does not moisturise her hair.. in order to keep it moisturised :look:
I think this totally defeats her point about aesthetics and what not.

Anyways, I understand where she is coming from in that regard. My hair's relationship with water has always been a love-hate one. I used to think that my hair hates water. Water used to make my hair dry and hard when it touched it, I think probably through evaporation. My hair used to remain dry and hard for days after wash day. By the time it softened up, it would be the dreaded wash day again.. My hair still reacts the same to water without sealing (with gel or creams), specially if I'm trying a stretched style such as braids or twists. Only in its totally coily state does it react the best after using water, otherwise I'll need to carefully seal and dry.

I think her problem is that she never gave herself the chance to learn to moisture and seal properly.

Oh yeah, if she's out there just spraying plain water on her hair than no that will not work. She may also have hard water. But you can't just wet your hair and not follow with an oil or butter or something, if I did that my hair would get soggy and start snapping off....

Still, I find water-based creams that are really thick and won't make my hair revert are the best compromise for me, but that may just be my hair.

I agree whole heartedly. I had stopped watching natural YouTubers for awhile. When I started watching again, I was like where did all of these annoying, clickbaiting chicks come from

I agree. I watched some old natural YouTube videos a few weeks ago and the differences went beyond camera quality.

Even among those who don’t rely on clickbait there are alot of inauthentic attempts at showing “authenticity”. The remaining OG natural YouTubers have become less authentic to compete. I won’t call them out because I understand that they have families to support.

I just miss when the natural corner of YouTube was more like a visual LHCF.

So reason 1: Because her hair gets dry with water. Take cleanliness out of the argument, the same thing happens with your hands when you wash them... still gotta put on some water and lotion, though.

Reason 5: Because her hair will freeze? Who goes out in winter with frozen hair? Is she walking around Sweden without a hat in negative temps? I don't get it.
