Setting To Success 2019

Would you say it was more stretched than the setting lotion set? What was it that you liked more about it?

Also, @faithVA , I plan on using them so that I can get my hair stretched to braid it up. Would you say culformers stretch your hair comparably to using heat? Thank you guys!
My hair is stretched more than a blow dry but not as much as a flat iron. My avi pic is a curlformer set. Its definitely enough stretch to braid it up. And if you aren't going to wear them I would just moisturize the hair after taking them out

The set with gel seemed more moisturized and held the curl longer than the setting lotion set. The curls with setting lotion were a bit more bouncier on day 1, but the 2nd and 3rd day curls were a dried out and frizzy.

I felt the moisture and overall sleekness of my hair was better with gel. Also I was able to convert it to other styles with ease once the curls fell.

But if your main purpose for using curlformers is to stretch your hair, I would just use leave in for the set and then use your stylers when you do your braids.

The waveformers are wonderful for stretching my hair. They go in quick and are much looser than the curlformers curl. I did them on wet hair with just leave in and hair is perfectly prepped for a next style if I wasn’t to lazy to just wear it pinned. I don’t joke the waves as they look too much like old school crimps, so I pinned them back to a pseudo-updo.

I picked up some broccoli seed oil, marula oil and some oat oil. I heard the first 2 were very slippery and the broccoli seed oil resembles a silicone. I've never heard of oat oil, but I love oat anything as its very smoothing and softening on my hair. I'll be trying to come up with a slippery, smoothing, hydrating but light weight leave in for roller setting that can allow my sets to dry quickly. I'll probably wash and set next weekend so I'll be sure to post pictures of me trailing the DIY RollerSetting Leave in.

Results were ok... a little weighed down, so I'll be tweaking the recipe by reducing the oil portion and replacing it with more conditioning/smoothing agents. Good news is my hair was fully dry by the time the hour timer stopped on my dryer. :blondboob:

I crossed wrapped it and skipped applying shea butter as I normally do since my hair was super moisturized already.

I hated how my hair was feeling...moisturized but stiff. I washed, re-set and cross wrapped. Hair back to feeling soft as ever. Gonna let my hair rest in this cross wrap for a few days, since I know its fed up with me messing with it!

None in particular yet. My hair is a little past BSL stretched. Not sure of exact inches. High density as well. Those wave formers also seem like they may be a good option. The plan for either is pre-stretching prior to flat ironing.

I love the look Wave formers give....like a blown out braidout....so pretty!

Magnetics might be a good option too. For BSL hair, the pink or grey would give you a nice stretch. If you get the ones with the snap on caps, it will help keep the hair stretched on the roller as it dries. Duck bill clips are good to have on hand too. All of this can be purchased at Sally's or your local BSS.

I would suggest hourglass rollers as well if you need help gripping your hair on the rollers, however most have to be ordered online. I hardly use mine though...magnetics are my favorite!

Thank you! Will look at both of those.

Washed and did a traditional roller set. Finally perfected my leave in. Its lightweight so I was dry by the time my 1 hour timer went off, but the base liquid is Heritage rosewater so it really left my hair bouncy and moisturized. I'm running low on this brand of rosewater so I'm going to try making my own when it runs out.

Today's curlformer set is decent but a little frizzy in some sections. I am still experimenting with leave-ins until I find my perfect combination. Nairobi foam wrap gives me a perfect set that will last 3-7 days and look new but it makes my hair dry and hard. I can't do that consistently without a setback. Leave-ins like lacio lacio make my hair feel amazing but my set poofs shortly after I finish drying it. I mixed the two I get some puffy parts and some sleek parts lol. I will keep testing. I am giving myself a pass while I am still learning but the goal is to not be able to tell the difference from how I do it and how it would look out the salon chair. Something with the setting power of Nairobi but moisturizing like a leave-in. I know I will get there. I have a bunch of leave in and styling products under my cabinet(over 100 no exaggeration) I will find something that meets my goal.

ETA I bought the LCL hooded dryer. My "old faithful" got a crack in it. So I was ready to buy a back up. I have the LCL ready but will keep my gold n hot 1400 until it is no longer functioning. I might see if can expoxy that joker to prolong the life of it lol.

I think it turned out really pretty! I had a similar experience with Nairobi foam. Nice hold, but the crunch was too much for me....and it started to flake a few days after setting. LOL

Yes I have a few tips:

1. Be sure to have clean parts when installing. I part with my fingers, but I make sure there are no loose hairs in the hook when pulling the hair into the curlformer, otherwise there will be snagging. If you feel any discomfort while pulling your hair into the curlformer, stop immediately and start over. That discomfort is your hair snagging and causing breakage.

2. Small sections. Try not to make the sections bigger than the width of the curlformer. If the section is too big, it won't fit into the hook properly, leading to loose hairs that can be yanked, etc.

3. If your hair is longer and the ends hang out of the curlformers, be sure to put a perm rod or some kind of small roller on the end. If you just leave it out, it can curl onto the end of the curlformer and get yanked when you remove the curlformer later. (Found out the hard way) Now I make sure to roll any loose ends on a roller.

Thank you so much!

I roller set my hair this morning.
My hair was already flat ironed so I just wet it down with a spray bottle, applied some Nairobi foam wrap and roller set it. I used Jane Carter wrap and roll so I can compare the feel of Nairobi to the different setting foam. I am a newbie at rollersetting. I have only tried 2 roller sets with magnetic rollers in the past. Today was my third attempt in my lifetime. I tried it today because I have a wash day coming this weekend and if it's a fail no big deal! Back in 2012 I bought all the tools I needed except a professional dryer. I put it all in the closet when my hair wouldn't be all the way dry after hours under my bonnet dryer. However, here and there I got that cool cap bonnet, the hourglass rollers and most recently the LCL dryer to step my game up. I have just been waiting for the urge to try again.

Anyway, I really love the way mom mom used to style her hair in the 80's that combed out Diana Ross, Dominique Deveraux, Phillis Hyman (in the gif) combed out glamour shot roller set look. So that is what I am going for.

I don't even care if it gives me Jazzy Auntie vibes (poke to the off topic board) because it looks good to me even if it is retro. So that is what I will be going for with my sets. I am going to ask my mom for 80's roller set tips that she used to use on herself to perfect my own process because although she doesn't wear her hair like that anymore it was too fly in pictures and that used to be her signature look. I feel four again just reminiscing her in the mirror doing her hair and makeup

My hair was fully dry when I checked around 30 minutes. I let it cool for another 10 before unrolling. The back came out just like I wanted. The top needs work but that is where my mom can help me. I tried the mohawk parting. I was able to get my rollers pretty tight, in some spots. I need to pay more attention to my roots being tight all over not "hit or miss" though. I didn't have any issues securing the rollers with the pins even though it as my first time using pins instead of clips. I had been watching 'Styles by Eden' YouTube videos to learn technique. The way her models hair looks when she combs down the curls is exactly my aim for an actual style. When I saw the take down I opted for a banana clip today. This is an improvement for me. It the first roller set I actually finished not a total fail even though it didn't meet my goal just yet. I will give it another go in a month or so. I have attached my photos.

@Lylddlebit Thank you for your post. I too, love that look. I've been preparing for my first roller set since being natural- for about 4-5 years:laugh:. Your hair is long and looks shiny:love:. Your set came out really nice. Hoping to see pics when you try again.

I did a set yesterday I'm so proud of myself for not just blowdrying. It took 2 hours to dry under my softhood, but that's a lot quicker than normal because sometimes even after sitting for 2 hours the roots would still be wet. I think it's because I didn't add any leave-ins or anything to my hair, just the heat protecting serum. This, coupled with my modified mesh rollers which allow for way more ventilation, is a lot more doable I think.

Sooooo maybe by March I stopped roller setting :look: That wasn't my intention... the weather was just too hot and I started working out again. Spent my entire summer in hot Atlanta and wet bunned it again every single day and suffered the same damage on my ends as I did before I started this thread. I just did another cut :ohwell:.

The good news is I managed to swing by the salon in Atlanta that sells the rollers and I met the owner. She was kewl. I'm back home with my hourglass rollers and I have an old set in my hair right now so I'll unpack, get my life together and try at least another 2 or 3 sets before the year is out.

I did rollerset 2 weeks ago. I am getting better. Still trying to perfect it though. This was on previously pressed hair wet down. I did not fully wash it instead doused with water detangled it and used Dudley's setting foam. The hair was pretty sleek but not moisturized enough without a full deep condition ahead of time. I will see if I can get it this sleek with a full deep condition preceding it next time. I wore this set for 1 week only due to the dryness. It was good practice for roller placement and practice setting though. I am still tinkering with my setting regimen.

Pretty!! Are you natural or relaxed?

Natural 4B. I can get good sleekness on stretched styles but I am actually not heat trained or relaxed.

Edited: Found a newer picture of shrinkage from the past few months of a true picture of how my hair shrinks up.

Oh wow!! You have some great setting skills! I am just getting started with setting, and have read through some of the pasts setting threads to get ideas for regimens.

I see you are using the rev air in that pic. Have your tried using it on your hair after a rollerset? I’m wondering if it would help further smooth the strands...

edit- what rollers do you use? I’m planning to get some hourglass rollers, as I currently only have flexi rods

Thank you. I am actually just getting started like you though...learning as I go. I have only done a handful of roller sets total. The ones I have tried from fresh washes have been fails. I do a letter better on already straightened hair when I practice roller placement(or catch a glimpse of hope while working towards true success instead of giving up lol) but am still learning. I have not used Revair for roller setting yet but I have used Revair with the curl former and wave former sets. My goal is to perfect my sets after a fresh wash and deep condition. The Studio Techilo videos along with my moms tips are my guide for how I want my roller sets to come out(no flat iron after just the rollerset itself) . Once I master that method I will consider the goal met lol :D. I love the way her sets look on freshly deep conditioned hair, particularly before she straightens it. It reminds my of my mother's hair when I was a little girl. I am practicing towards that level.
