The Wolfganglisborg Method

I’m 4b/4c and I just stocked up on my safflower oil today at 1/2 off because it’s being discontinued or something.

I have never really liked oils (olive, coconut, jojoba, grape seed, hemp seed) because they make my hair crunchy dry stiff like. So I don’t use them. My hair does like castor oil but I don’t really use it since its so thick.

Anyway, a full 24 hour day after doing the oil rinse (without the combing), I will say that sections of my hair dried smooth and soft. Much softer than I would imagine possible for me without product and air drying. Any my hair feels different.

I will be doing this again.
Please keep us updated !

On the Grow and Keeping it Simple
I spent forever going through his IG trying to piece this together. His regimen combines oil rinsing/washing with the techniques guys use to wave train their hair.

What he does is:

1. Rinse and detangles his hair every day in the shower. He detangles with several tools while smoothing into a style (buns, ponys, pigtails).
2. The tools he uses ranges from a rake comb, vented brush, denman brush, fine tooth combs, and a soft boar bristle brush. There really is no order to which brushes he uses. He just does what’s needed to get his hair as smooth as possible. It seems like a rake or vented brush-> denman-> boar brush is his average combo. He does not like a regular wide tooth comb because it does not smooth, but promotes frizz.
3. After his hair is completely smooth, he tops with oil and then ties is down with a satin scar to set his waves.
4. Every 3 days he does an oil rinse. He applies the oil to his hair and scalp overnight or no less than an hour before his wash. Then he co-washes the oil out. Old school co-washing with a rinse out conditioner. He then follows the above steps.
5. He washes with shampoo. I can’t tell how exactly how often, I’m estimating that he shampoos every 6-8 days. That routine is oil rinse-> shampoo-> detangle with conditioner->style. He’s just discovered cleansing conditioners, so he’s been using that in place of shampoo as his wash in his more recent videos.
6. He does not normally use any leave in or gels in his hair. Just oils and water. Recently it appears he’s been getting contacted by different brands so he’s incorporated some leave-ins and gels into the routine. But he’s big on not weighting down and overly coating the hair.
7. He does not deep condition.
8. He seems to give more credit to the daily rinsing and detangling and setting his waves, than to just oil rinsing.
9. He insists that the water temperature must be hot (not scalding) while doing all of this.

That’s all I can really recall right now. Honestly, 1/3 of what this guys says about hair is nonsense. The other 1/3 of his posts are word salads that I can barely understand. But the last 1/3 sounds like a pretty good hair regimen. I may try it out. I definitely need to detangle my hair more often, and following waving techniques to get better curl definition just makes sense to me.

You're an angel.

Sounds like our hair acts similarly to oil. Oil after rinsing in any form leaves my hair feeling dry, crunchy and usually greasy.

When I finish what I have I may try safflower and some other oils.

Glad you had a good experience this time.

Well today my hair feels a little crispy. Still soft overall, but not as much as yesterday. I’m going to oil wash again tomorrow and see.

I chose safflower because it’s high in ceramides. I figure it should be at least a bit more beneficial than the oils I hate.

Rinsed again tonight which helped me make some decisions. I just added oil, rinsed and detangled under water. I noticed that adding the conditioner helped with the detangling and it also made it easier for me to twist my hair. So I will be doing oil + conditioner instead of just oil.

I tried the fine tooth comb. I don't think I really need it. I will use the wide tooth, 1 step down and some form of brush. I think that is enough. Rinsing so frequently most of my shed hairs come out with the wide tooth comb.

For the month of May I will try to rinse every day if I can. I will do oil + conditioner and twist my hair while in the shower. I won't add leave-in or conditioner unless I find I really need it. I added in my fine tooth comb

I still need to decide if I want to oil, rinse, oil + conditioner or just oil + conditioner. I will just do oil + conditioner for now and see how that goes.

After I do this for a week or two, I will try adding gel to style.

My hair looked decent when took it down today. If I had put in decent flat twists it looked as if I could have worn a flat twist out. My hair was also dry this morning with no issues even though my twist were large. And my ends aren't sticking together :yay: Maybe I can retain some growth.

Awesome!!! And remember, like some days, you can just use water only, with just oil to seal. And only actually use oil to cleanse and rinse w/ every three days. Great reviews so far!! As @water_n_oil stated earlier in the thread, he tries to push the fact that water is your best friend in all of this as opposed to the oils, tho the oils play a major part.

Water and oil is probably something that works the longer you have been doing it. But I can see how some ladies who just tried water and oil lost hair in detangling. It isn't initially smooth enough.

Just rinsing with water and then trying to seal would leave my hair hard to style and greasy.

My tip for 4b/4c ladies is to initially keep the conditioner until you see some real changes in your hair.

Three days after the initial attempt at his method (without combing) my hair is crispy. Still smooth, but not soft anymore.

Tonight I’m going to shampoo with a clarifyer (redken, which I should have done before trying his method), then I’m going to oil wash 2x, then I’m going to remove excess oil with conditioner. I’m going to use a comb and a brush this time.

If you want to make it past 2 days you may definitely need use a leave in and maybe even seal. Are you using a leave in? The hair is going to lose water after a day or two. He does his hair every other day which is why he doesn't have to use anything afterwards.

No. I was just trying it out without a leave in and sealing to see how my hair responds. I know my hair needs a leave in and butter to seal because my hair is dryer than a desert. But it felt really soft in the shower just from oil washing. I was surprised.

So I tried this method yesterday.

Combs: Wide-tooth comb + Tangle Teezer Brush + Denman + Fine tooth comb

Pros:
-I got a Denman brush through my hair for the first time ever!
-I got a fine tooth comb through my natural hair for the first time ever!
-Discovered I haven't been properly detangling my hair all this time
-My hair is soft, shiny, and more defined with just water and oil
-Suprisingly, my hair isn't greasy
-Twists are soft, defined and frizzless

Cons:
-Time consuming: took about 45 minutes to get through six sections

I am far too busy to do this every day and I'm afraid of breakage, so I will mod this a bit to see if I can get similar effects:

1) Water rinse/detangle every other day
2) Oil rinse and then co-wash on day 7 (weekend)
3) Oil rinse/Shampoo/DC/Detangle every two weeks

It's basically the same thing, but time-wise cut in half, so I'm following it, but instead of everyday wetting, every other. Instead of an oil rinse every 3 days, I'll do every six and so on.

I'll report back after a month of this.

Great pros!!!! Thanks for sharing!!! And the thing about the con with it being so time consuming, the more ya hair get used to it, the less time it should take.

This is what I figured when I started following him a month ago.
He said something stupid about hair not being smooth because black women keep their hair in braids, and that's what's caused all of our problems. (He said this in one of his IG stories)
I posted a comment directly on his page saying this was bull, since I have never worn braids ever, (or any style -I am a strict wash n go'er) and I have the same non smooth problem...
He wrote me back on instagram to apologize...but I haven't really watched his stuff since then.

If it works for you all, I may revisit it.

He also has gems like these that you have to wade through. Apparently, there’s no such thing as having multiple textures, It’s just damage from improper styling.

And then his reply to a 4C haired person. :spinning:

Maybe this was it. I was too though.
I've never ever worn a ponytail, but you can clearly see all three textures on my head on any given day.

.Done.

This is my hope! Lately, my hair has been the absolute driest it's ever been, so I'm glad that this helped. I'm surprised that after just one try, I was able to see a difference. I hope this works out because my regimen needs revamping.

He says a lot of ignorant and confusing things, and it seems a lot of his opinions about black hair, and why black women don’t have long hair, and why kinkier textures can’t get smooth hair and waves, ect., come straight outta his :moon:.

Yuuup!
So are you going to try it? Have you tried it under a wash n go yet?
I'm lightweight curious now...

So I did another oil wash this morning. I will say my hair feels soft. I will also say my hair is not about that combing every washday life. My hair is just too fragile for that.

But my hair does love the daily water. I wonder if I can oil wash effectively in small to medium twists. I don’t want to get severe knots like I did from having loose hair while following the MHM.

Did another rinsing/detangling session and my hair is getting softer, more manageable and defined with each time. Almost no hair came out until I got to the crown and I haven't used any products since I started doing this. My long-term concern is the TIME it takes to wet and detangle each section. I am also concerned about the constant combing and detangling and that that it could thin/damage the hair over time. Hmmmmm.
