Are People Still Doing Hot Oil Treatments?

I remember this to be the craze back in the day. An oil for growing hair, an oil for growing the edges, an oil for bringing world peace and paying off debt lol

On a serious note, I am curious to know if you ladies still practice hot oil treatments in your regimens, and what are the benefits you have noticed from them.

I do oil treatments (not hot) all the time as a prepoo. I have a homemade herbal oil blend i made and will take out my twist and slather my scalp and hair with it and detangle row by row. Then braid the row to keep untangled and move to the next row. Once done put plastic cap on and leave in til i wash. I;ve seen great results. Thicker shinier hair. Less shedding on detangle/wash day. Wash day being easier. No stripping when i shampoo. Etc.....

These all sound great! I do struggle with detangling, so I will give it a try next wash day! How long do you leave the oil in? I can't imagine my self sleeping with it since I am a messy sleeper and my pillows will get dirty and probably my husband as well lol Would leave in it for couple hours work just as well?

i literally just did the oil prepoo and only left it in for as long as it took me to eat and my hair came out GREAT!!!!! I would say 30-1hr is all thats needed. Just rem to put a plastic cap on. And if u want a really quick prepoo after u apply it put the shower cap on and use heat ( a hot head, bonnet dryer, etc...) for as long as u want (10-15 min)

I don’t as much out of sheer natural laziness. But I plan to start back. I used to prepoo with a hot oil and then slather conditioner. Now I usually just do a conditioner with a heat cap.

It was always good for my strands and keeping them moisturized. I might do some nice greenhouse overnighters once I take my braids out.

I need to get back to it. I still have some nice ayuveridic blends. Plus some new ones, like a nice onion and garlic one from Uhuru.

Eta: I still use oil in my reginmen. I oil my scalp every few days since I use rice water.

I haven't used oil as a pre-poo in a long while. I just posted in another thread, that I was going to experiment with Shea oil. @VictoriousBrownFlower I think I will follow your lead. I'm trying to minimize the amount of shedding and detangling issues I deal with.
If u really wanna use a powerhouse oil than i suggest making an herb infused oil... Its super easy to make. Takes 7 hrs. I use a pot and a METAL bowl thats big enough to put on top of the pot with room for water at the bottom. Then fill a mason jar with the herbs of ur choice and add the oil to cover. Dump it all in the make shift double boiler. Put the stove on the LOWEST setting and let cook for 7-8 hrs. Strain or not ur choice when pouring it back in the mason jar.

So wash day is over, and I have to say that my hair felt super soft during cleansing, and detangling was so much more easier than normal! I was able to detangle 90% of my hair outside of the shower when applying the coconut oil. My WNG is not 100% dry, so I am not sure how my hair is going to feel when fully done. But so far so good! I am thinking I will add this to my weekly wash day, and watch how my hair reacts in a month or two.

Cool!!!! I will say keep an eye on ur hair because coconut oil was a prob for me but not everyone. My hair doesn't like protein very much so it makes sense it doesn't like coconut oil. It felt really moisturized when wet but dried rough.

I do over night treatments once a week with hemp oil mixed with conditioner.... then I rinse it out and shampoo as normal.
I find that I am able to keep my hair softer and moisturized during the week like this, since I don't do too much to my hair after I style it.
(i'm bad at daily moisturizing)

It really has help with my shedding (i barely shed now, and detangling is surprisingly easy)

I just hate the feeling of sleeping with an oily head over night. ugh

“Keis et al. in 2005 studied the effect of coconut oil, olive oil, sunflower oil and mineral oil on the hair.[28] Except for mineral oil, heat decreased the capillary adhesion of the other oils, resulting from the penetration into the hair fiber by diffusion, leaving a thin film on the surface.”

*shrugs* i don’t have access to the full study so I take this with a grain of salt (especially since the sample hairs were probably stripped of product before testing), but the application of heat part makes me want to start incorporating hot oil treatments into my routine.

Just another interesting tidbit on oil:

“The interesting part about oil is that it has recently been shown to have a role in acting as an adhesive, patching these cracks and cavities allowing the cuticle to maintain its mechanical integrity. (Journal of Cosmetic Science, pg 85-95, 2009) ” - The Natural Haven Bloom
