The Wolfganglisborg Method

My hair has been drying out really bad in between oil rinses. At first when I started this method, it would feel soft for 2 days and then start getting that crispy feeling I get from using oils. However lately, my hair starts feeling crispy dry as soon as my hair dries from the shower. And lately my hair has been drying super fast out of the shower, when in the past, my hair would stay wet for days if I air dry.

I don’t think the oils I’ve been using to oil wash is enough to keep the moisture in my hair. Or maybe water alone isn’t enough moisture. I also went back to my staple leave in (oyin hair dew) the last ofew times, but my hair still dried out and got that crispy feeling faster than it ever had... the very next day.

Also, my scalp has been driving me crazy. It’s itchy and begs me to give it a good long and deep scratch at the most inappropriate times.

I can’t continue this way ladies. I do like the way my hair detangles after being saturated with oil and topped with hot water. And I do like how I am getting less tangles. I have been wet bunning in the shower and my hair didn’t get any of the knots I expected. I do like how my strands feel smoother and stronger ( although I don’t know if they are stronger because I always have tons of breakage and the amount of breakage hasn’t changed). However the negatives of itchy scalp and dry dull hair outweighs these small positives.

I’m currently deep conditioning overnight to try to feed my hair some moisture.

Thanks for sharing. Aw that sucks. I forgot if you mentioned it already, but what kind of porosity is your hair again? Just curious and tryna see if certain hair types respond certain ways to this method. And what oils were you using?

Porosity I don’t know for sure. I feel like I go back and forth. I feel like I am usually high porosity because of rough strands and always dry hair that is dull looking because my shingles are raised and not laying flat and smooth. But with this method my strands are smooth in both directions.

Oils are safflower, avocado, castor, sweet almond oil. I’ve used one or a combo of them together.

I have been oil rinsing almost every day because that is the only time my hair feels wonderful, when wet and oily. But out of the shower is another story.

The only thing that has really worked for me keeping my hair soft out of the shower has been my Shea butter whip to seal it all in. I think my hair needs a heavy butter at the end of a wash routine. In fact, when I did my first initial oil wash, it was on dirty hair that had loads of Shea butter. My hair was soft for a few days out of the shower which is normal after my Shea whip sealing. But after I clarified and tried to do this method on clean hair, it’s been a nightmare.

I think I will incorporate the oil rinses into my routine because I think it does really help with tangles and SSKs. I will also incorporate the detangling on oil drenched hair, moist with hot water, and topped with conditioner (best method to detangle I’ve ever tried in my life and I usually use conditioner alone or on wet hair). But at the end of a oil wash, I’m going to seal it up with my Shea whip and see if that helps retain moisture.

So what are you doing after you do the oil rinses?

The first time I tried this I didn't do anything else to my hair just twisted it up. But I know what you mean about that "crispy" feeling you get. It's not quite dry but it isn't moisturized either. That's the feeling I used to get whenever I used oil in my hair which is why I've never really been a fan and stopped using it to seal my hair. But with this method I still spritz with my water and glycerin and still use my shea butter after to style my hair. It's helped me. Maybe after I've been doing this for a while I won't need anything extra but for now I have to make sure I'm still moisturizing and sealing the way I normally would.

I just wanted to also add that when I did this last night I put my hair in a little ponytail and put a scarf on (on wet hair!) and when I took it off about an hour later to actually do my bantu knots my hair was dry and I had waves on waves on waves! I literally laughed out loud like what the heck!!! :lachen:I couldn't believe it. I don't know that I like the wavy look but at least now I know what this method does to my hair. I love the detangling and not losing any hair so I'm going to keep at it.

I have been busy this week so just doing what I feel up to. Last night was day 3 but I didn't have much time. I rinsed and my hair felt so soft. I put my hair in 6 sections, added oil, finger detangled and rinsed. Then I just twisted it up. My hair was easy to twist.

Without the conditioner my hair feels greasier and crunchier. I know I need to use both together to have good results but I just wasn't feeling it.

I need to henna this week so not sure how I'm going to work that in. I think I will have to skip oil for 3 days until my henna sets.

My hair behaves the same way with oils, which is why I was never a fan either.

My regime on this method is cover dry hair in oil. Wet in shower with hot water and rinse well. Add more oil. Add conditioner. Finger detangle. Comb/brush detangle. Rinse well. Add Oyin hair dew. Ponytail.

I tried with and without hair dew. The results were the same. Crispy dry hair

Nice!!!! Wish we could have seen those waves. And I think keeping the glycerin and Shea butter in the routine def works.. but glad to hear this method gave you results!!!

Sounds like too much oil (and too often) for your hair. I get that same crispy feeling if my hair is super oily.

Once per week. I clarify with Redken 1x per month and shampoo with whatever is on hand the other weeks. I have a lot of shampoos.
Sounds like the oils coated your hair and don’t let any moisture come through,it could be also too much washing and rinsing. This method would give me mad build up and breakage ,it’s too much manipulation too much wet hair . Just stick to what works .

Been trying this for the past 3 days, my high porosity hair has never been so smooth and easy to detangle. I usually have to detangle very carefully and slowly in sections due to constant webbing. Luckily, I have not been experiencing any of that. I have been using coconut oil and castor oil. At first the castor oil was way too heavy, so I started using less of it and I think that worked out pretty well. Normally I would seal with Shea but I didn't want to overdo it and experience build up on my strands.

I tried again today with a mixture of olive oil and grapeseed oil. After I rinsed the oil I conditioned and detangled.

I combed with a wide tooth then medium tooth then fine tooth then super fine comb. The combs went through smoothly, but after I was done I still hit snags when ran my fingers through my hair.

I did a wash n go with gel. I hope it holds moisture for 3-5 days.

Welp, it's official. This method is not for me! My hair loves the oil but not the detangling, it is too fine to handle it. I noticed some new breakage at the front of my hair yesterday when I was putting it up into a bun.

I am still happy I tried something new, I think I will continue to incorporate the oil rinsing on my wash days, but I cannot do detangling that often it is too much.

I'm trying to decide how to wear my hair with this new routine. Before I found this thread I was already thinking about rinsing my hair daily since the warm weather is here and my hair likes that during this time. So finding this routine was right on time but I still don't know how to wear my hair. I don't want to have to twist/bantu knot nightly because I'm lazy, I don't wear wash and gos at this length and I know I can't be wearing my hair pulled back in a struggle bun everyday because my nape and edges revolt almost immediately. But those seem like my only options. I have no idea what to do.

That’s a good question. I’m tryna think what else I’d wear besides a bun. Hmm.. Maybe two low buns, a top knot, one day a low bun, two braids goin bk w a pretty hair piece/jewel, two space buns, or a slick ponytail with hair out.. ima be tryna think of more styles.

Last time I oil washed I sealed with a light grease (APB hair icing). Two days later I had to try again because my hair got crispy dry and my scalp was crazy irritated.

So I oil washed again last night. Only finger detangled. I only used castor oil, the one oil that has never made my hair crispy . I wet hair in shower with hot water. Oiled my scalp and hair. Rinsed with hot water. Detangled. Braided in 8 plaits out of shower and wrapped in a non cotton shirt ( I need some silk scarves). Took down braids this morning for a bun. Hair is a greasy mess, but soft and smooth. Hopefully in two days I won’t want to scratch my head off my shoulders and my hair won’t be desert dry.

@GettingKinky they just don't act right when my hair is pulled back. My hair will be like "yeah you want your back then how about I get to acting like a receeding hair line and see if you still like it" And when I stop pulling it back it goes back to normal. Plus the front will start breaking off from being brushed back and the nape starts to disappear. Even puffs can get me in trouble if I wear them too often. She's a temperamental beast and likes to be free. She does the best like that. But this twisting all the time is not it!

@Amerie123 I forgot about 2 braids. I like those but I usually blow dry my hair to make my braids neater. I'm going to try it without blow drying tonight and see how it looks.

@LdyKamz have you tried a wash n go? Once you figure out how to get it to work for your hair, it’s pretty easy.
I may try them again but once I get to this length I usually give up on them because the front of my hair get less coily and more wavy as it gets longer and it doesn't look right with the rest of my hair. I was actually just watching a video of a girl that had the same issue and her wash and gos looked good but mine just look janky. Mine are much cuter when my hair is really short.

Is the problem that the wavy part is too long or is it that the wavy part just doesn’t “match” with the rest of your hair?

@fluffyforever when I get home I'll see if I can find it again and send it to you. This girl says she is 3c but her hair legit looks like fine, heat damaged hair with straight ends. The way she did her wash and gos she had to do a lot of scrunching and twirling but in the end her hair was all uniform and cute. I was like why can't I do that?!

LdyKamz

@GettingKinky it just looks like it doesn't match. But I think part of that is because I may have to treat that part differently for wash and gos and I haven't quite figured out what that is so I just gave up lol I may have to stop kidding myself and just admit that the front of my hair might be in the 3s. When I big chop and do wash and gos the curls are looser there but they look nice with everything else. When it gets to like my ears the front looks super stretched and starts acting weird. I used to make excuses like oh it's heat damage and the next time I won't use any heat and it'll look like the rest of my hair but it never has. I'm actually going to experiment tonight after I rinse my hair and if it goes to hell then I'll do the 2 braids.

@fluffyforever I couldn't find the video - I'm still looking because I wanted to watch it again last night before I did my wash and go. And now I really need to see it again to see if I missed a step or something. My wash and go came out ok last night much better than what I usually get at this length. A few things:

1. I realize now part of what causes my hot mess wash and gos at this length is I'm impatient with drying and I touch my hair too much in the process.
2. I completely stopped doing the Anthony Dickie method for wash and gos and his method was always best for my hair.
3. I need to go back to applying products in sections.
4. Scrunching the back and the front (and maybe twirling the front) and leaving it alone until it dries will give me the best results.

Now having said all that, my hair is in pretty good shape and all the curls are intact BUT I look like a little girl with my hair like this and I do not like that! I also noticed doing this whole oil rinsing/detangling routine for almost 2 weeks my hair seems to always be tangle free. I slept on my loose hair last night and when I picked it out this morning for a puff there were no tangles or snags in my hair that the pick just went straight through my hair to the end! So I ended up having to comb my hair out and wearing it like a big blow out puff. It's cute. I'm going to keep experimenting.

I started back my routine on Saturday and so far my high porosity hair seems to be doing pretty good. Usually my hair dries out super fast and poofs which means I have to add some type of moisture to my hair and restyle it every single day if it's not in a protective style :wallbash:.

So far with this method, I'm able to go every 3 days without adding moisture or restyling my hair which is a big plus for my high porosity hair :yep:. However, my hair is not ready for wash n gos just yet. I tried it and my hair looks a hot mess . Therefore, I apply twist once I'm done with my routine and add perm rods just to give it a twist and curl look then I usually wear it in a puff for 3 days then repeat my routine.

So far this is my routine:
  • Once a week I preopoo with fresh aloe vera from the leaf. I add it to my scalp only then I apply the Creole organics oil that was recommended by Wolfgang himself. Then I sit under my heat cap for 30 min.
  • Then I rinse it out with hot water but not scolding hot water. I add more of this oil and add it to my scalp and massage my scalp and apply it to my hair then I rinse it out with the hot water.
  • Next I apply my luvnaturals conditioner which I might add gives me good slip and it calms down my cuticles some before I start my detangling process.
  • I detangle in four sections with a rake comb under running water, then I use a vent brush still under running water, then I use an imitation denman brush under running water, and then I finish it with a seamless fine tooth comb. I was really surprised how easily my hair was detangled. I even had some curl definition once I'd finished. I was surprised I didn't see any breakage just a few shed hairs.
  • I've realized that I need to add a little bit of the luvnaturals conditioner back to my hair before applying my aloe vera. Before I would just apply the aloe without adding conditioner, but my high porosity hair needs a conditioner first. Maybe as is starts to hydrate, I might be able to skip this step, but for now I need this step in my routine.
  • After adding the conditioner and aloe vera, I apply a gel to my hair to seal in more moisture. All this is still while I'm in the shower. Then I twist my hair into either two big flat twist or 8 regular twist and curl my ends on small perm rods just to give it a more polished look. If it's during the work week it's imperative that I sit under a hooded dryer or my hair will still be wet in the morning. If it's the weekend, and I'm not going anywhere then I'll just let it air dry. Then I take out the twist and put it in a puff for 3 days. I also don't use any ponytail holders or clips to make my puff. I use bobby pins because it's less stress on my hair. Also the part of my hair that I brush into my puff, I have tiny waves all around the perimeter of my head. I never could get those waves before so his method does have some validity to it :yep:.

@tashboog tell me more about this bobby pin method you use for your puffs? Are you saying you don't use anything to wrap around your head to put it up. You just brush it up and then pin it in places where the band or holder would go?

@LdyKamz that is correct. I don't use anything to wrap around my head. I put the bobby pins around the perimeter of my head for the illusion of a puff. Then I usually wear a cute headband to dress it up. It's less stressful on the crown and the edges.

So I do mine similar to this video except I use bobby pins and she uses combs, but it's still the same technique. I also apply bobby pins to front of my head instead of doing a front puff like this video.
