Hair type system of 1a-4b is really only referencing curl diameter. And you can't really see your curl pattern (diameter) until you cut off the relaxed ends. Going natural (transitioning) is easy or hard, depending on your expectations. I transitioned for just over a year, and it was pretty easy to do. But I kept my hair in a bun or ponytail, and I didn't mind not having sleek straight hair.

I agree that you won’t know your hair type until all of it is natural. What I’ve noticed about people transitioning is that it becomes difficult when they haven’t made the mental transition. I had an easy transition because I was ready to let go of the idea that my hair should be straight and behave like it did when it was relaxed. I did perm rod sets and was happy with puffy roots. I also did coils when it was shorter.

The people I know who tried to go natural and “failed” were frustrated when their hair wasn’t straight and easily combed through from root to tip. They spent 99% of their time trying to make their hair do what it doesn’t want to do naturally.

You won't know until you cut it off. In my experience my natural hair is easy to deal with as new growth but not as easy dealing with root to tip.
