Has anyone experienced hair damage from going to Dominican hair stylists?

I am probably the only one to post a positive experience, but here goes

1) Have Dominican hair salons affected your hair in a negative way?
My experience was negative when I had my hair blown out from root to tip weekly was bad. However, I have fine hair and at the time I was double processed. NOW, I have texturized hair and I only get a rollerset and my roots blown out. I've done this since late 2005 and my hair is by no means thin and has even gotten thicker. I do have very fine hair, but that's just how my hair is.

2) If so, how did you get your hair back to a healthy state?
So I got my hair healthy by texturizing and stretching my relaxers.

3) Has anyone been able to successfully go to dominican hair salons and keep their hair healthy (not just long)?
I go weekly and my hair is healthy. I only have heat applied to my roots and my hair looks great. I think the problem is that you can't go to just any salon period. At the two salons that I frequent, the same people do my hair, they detangle gently, and I lose minimal hair during rollersetting. I lose much more hair when I rollerset on my own, another reason that I go to the salon.

Also, just want to add, any salon can be harmful. I had my hair wet wrapped once and that was the worst experience ever :wallbash:.

I don't think I can take any thing being blown out anymore, at least not until I build my edges back up (they are see through and patchy).

I experienced a really bad experience - to make a long story short, I has to cut off 2 inches of my hair. I learned my lesson- no more hair salons!

1) Have dominican hair salons affected your hair in a negative way? Yep..I've only been to 2 and one of them I was a regular customer, every week for about 3 years and it wasn't until I found this board that my hair started looking like somebody owned it. I went in with go lush head of hair and came out like rats were chewing my hair up

2) If so, how did you get your hair back to a healthy state? I started stretching my relaxers (from 6-8 weeks to 16 weeks); did bi weekly protein treatments, learned how to apply my own relaxer, use an hot applicance only once after each wash and apply a moisturizer daily to the entire length of hair.

3) Has anyone been able to successfully go to dominican hair salons and keep their hair healthy (not just long)? Didn't happen for me

YES!!! I remember sitting in the chair one day after getting a blowout and being able to see right through my hair at the stylist standing behind me talking about how long my hair had gotten. Yes it was long but very thin to the point I can see through it. The stylist also gave me a lopsided trim as well! What the hell is wrong with these people? They can't see that it is lopsided?

I thought my looked lopsided too, my left side is shorter

IMy questions are:

1) Have dominican hair salons affected your hair in a negative way? Yes, my hair at first was growing in nicely but then I asked if my hair was healthy enough to put in color. she was like Of course so I did the color and afterwards:nono: my hair was shedding and breaking like crazy

2) If so, how did you get your hair back to a healthy state?I started stretching from 5-6 weeks (she kept insisting I should'nt go longer than that) to 12-14 weeks.
3) Has anyone been able to successfully go to dominican hair salons and keep their hair healthy (not just long)?I just make sure she does not blowdry my hair or apply any sort of direct heat just rollersets and conditioners and wrap THATS IT!
Feel free to PM me as well....TIA

So it may be okay but you have to make sure you limit the amount of the blowdrying done on your hair. No heat!!

YES!!!!!!!!

Messing with them set me back a whole year.
Everyone I know raves about them and not all of them are like bad but a lot of them overlap like CRAZY!!! That caused my ends to get very thin.

My sides broke off to less than 1/2 inch. I think they might have left the relaxer on too long or didnt neutralize well. the right side grew about 2 1/2 inches, still very short compared to the rest of my hair but the left side has pretty much remained the same.

once again, i will say that not all of them are bad but I won't be going back!:nono:

Just because someone raves about something does not mean it's for you!

Wash and sets and blowouts (roots only) are fine but if you want to get a relaxer from them PLEASE be careful! They just slap on the relaxer without a care in the world. One time I went and the lady had the relaxer dropping on my clothes and on my bag after that i said never again. God forbid it went in my eye and I went blind.:ohwell:

ETA: I used got a blowout from them only once since I started going to them and it was only the roots that were blown out.

Right now I am doing scalp massages to my damaged sides, drinking more water eating healthier. i just started doing this so i dont have results yet but i am positive it will get better.

I may start massaging my scalp to get my edges in better shape and start my transition to natural.

Wow, thank heavens for this thread! For the past month, I have been considering going to a salon to get my hair done (with my meter pointing more and more to "bad idea"). Now, I'm definitely not going. Whew!

It's so interesting you started this thread. I just recently decided I will not be going to the dominican salon anymore. When I began my hair journey, I washed, airdried, and only got my hair rollerset and roots blown out on special occasions. If you look in my siggy, my hair was getting to bra strap and very healthy. I started going to the dominican salon regularly about a year ago. My hair is still armpit length now but I'm trying to slowly cut the thin looking ends off as I start over.

My hair has thinned out considerably so I'm going back to my sista girl ways of doing my own hair (except for relaxer). I will be hitting the new growth with a flat iron if needed from now on. I can't afford to do all this haircare work for thin hair....

I have most definitely experienced damaged hair from going to a Dom hairstylist--my sister did as well. I immediately stopped going. Cheap prices just weren't worth the amount of damage. I've since found 2 great AA stylist that care for my hair as it should be. Expensive? Yes, but to me it's well worth the expense.

Interesting thread...

For so long the tone has been " The Dominicans are better" "They are more concerned with health of the hair" I've never believed the latter at all, it's just that blowouts are their THING; all that heat isn't good for anyone

I haven't because I only would let them do rollersets, but my mother before she became a hairstylist had her scalp burned so bad from them giving her a relaxer her scalp was oozing pus. And they do burn peoples hair out sometimes.

I haven't been to a dominican salon in a while since movign to New Jersey from NYC but they can damage some hair, imo they are not as skilled as a Black hairstylist that is a good hairdresser and that is licensed. A lot of them are not licensed cosmetologists.

Me either.

The one I went to noticed my sides were damaged but never said a thing. it was nice not to have someone bug you about a trim but with them it was like, let's get her in and get her out.

I went to a different dominican salon and the woman there noticed the breakage at the sides and suggested i tried some placenta thing.

I had a not so great experience the one time I went to a Dominican salon. I had about 5 weeks of new growth on my VERY coarse 4b relaxed hair and although I explained this and asked the stylist to be as gentle as possible, she ripped that rat tooth comb through my hair like it had done something to her and after all was said and done, several clumps of my hair was scattered on the floor :wallbash:. I proceeded to get the roots blown out and although my hair looked great, I can see that if I went regularly then my hair would probably thin because they were so rough on my head.

While I was at the salon I saw a lot of girls there with really long hair but I also noticed that a lot of them didn't really look like they had my texture of hair. The one lady whose hair texture moreso resembled mine (a much older lady) had hair that was so thin I could see straight through it.

As others have mentioned, I think that Dominican salons can be a good thing depending on where you go and what you get done based on your how much your hair can withstand.

When I lived in NY, I use to faithfully go to DS every 2 weeks. My hair was long, but with see through ends. It was so thin! They use that small tooth comb, that horrible rake of a brush and they do not take the time to detangle your hair. The hairdressers at the salon know very little about true hair care, identifying hair problems and giving you a solution. All they know is what they do. Rollerset and blow dry. When your hair is breaking there is no concern to give you a deep conditioner, or protein treatment. They just continue on as usual. Are they even licensed??? I know many ladies who have thin hair after years at the DS. The look they give you after a rollerset is very desireable because it's all bouncy and shiny, but when them curls fall you start to see all the damage. I use to have broken hairs in the crown of my head for days. When only on occasion ( monthly) , the DS is good other then that it's risky.

If you want to continue to go, I think you should limit your visits. Ask her to use a better comb to part and rollerset. Detangle it yourself before she begins. Make her give you a deep conditioner (one you chose) everytime you visit. Stop the blowouts. Let your curls fall naturally.

I went to two places for a little while.

I think what did me in was the blowouts. That what changed my hair texture.

I wonder if they know that extreme heat can cause damage. Only one person. I know was very careful with my hair, and told me I should rollerset my hair before anything else.

But also, make sure they use a heat protectant on your hair.

Some women, actually bring in their own products and ask the beautician to use them.

I actually went to a Dominican salon yesterday for my relaxer.
I can only remember ONCE that I was satisfied with their blowdrying (in terms of health and look) and that was by a Dominican stylist who DIDN'T put the heat on high. She blowdried on medium and lowheat, detangled with a wide comb, used CHI Silk Infusion, and my hair came out BEAUTIFUL and THICK.

ALL the other Dominican stylists, on the other hand, left my already-fine hair looking thin.
And yes, I get a lot of broken hairs from them too.
I need to take a break from them if I want to retain length this year. Can't keep finding new ways to cause damage to my strands.

I know you already know this, but ALL DOMINICAN SALONS are not the same. They are very similar in technique but by no means the same. I went to one (my friend worked there and was gonna get me a discount) that was horrible. the ladies (who were actually men) were arguing over petty things and the one doing my hair kept blowdrying and blowdrying and blowdrying. i thought it would NEVER end. it was so unneccesary.
So heres my advice since there are differences. when going to ANY salon, start out by WARNING them of how picky you are (in a nice way) except OVER EXAGGERATE. Hearing this will make them VERY careful with your hair - at least for me. And when you end up being less picky then you warned them, they will feel relieved - lol.

This is what a relative is saying to me, to try her spot...and I'm tempted...maybe just once to try them. Her hair looks so nice and healthy and I trust her so...maybe for one special occasion and that's it for '08....I've vowed to stay away...I feel very apprehensive now though of going to Dom salons...

*look, I done fell off already on Jan. 3rd..*:ohwell:

*no, just one trip there for the year - that's it...*

i was wondering that also. but dont you have to be licensed in order to do hair?

I would hope so:perplexed...I remember this lady about to kill this young girl for letting relaxer sit too long in her hair. It had broke off her hair badly in the back:nono:. I figure if their are just washing/roller setting then maybe or maybe but as far as doing relaxers/coloring I would hope so:yep:....

Yes, and I decided to go natural. My midback relax hair broke off until there was not any thing left.

I'm sorry but I find this thread funny. (Not to the OP) All I see on the forum is thread where some of y'all are showing off your DB. Now it's let's run from them. This is why when dealing with YOUR hair you have to make sure is that's best for YOUR hair. I know I can't get DB because my hair is already thin. I know how much heat my hair can take over a year before it starts to break off. If I went to get a DB that's all the heat I can use for the year lol. I will pass on that. If/when I go to them to get my hair done it will be for rollerset only. I would get a rollerset just to see how they do it so I can do it at home anyways.

I only go to the Dominicans for my relaxer retouches. My hair had started to thin some and broke off by my left nape-ear area b/c they after rollersetting it, I used to to let them blow it out. When really I just got a relaxer, I didn't need that. The blow dryer would burn my scalp that just had chemicals on it!:perplexed So I stopped and am nurturing my hair back to its original fullness. Now when I go, I don't let them blow it out anymore. They take the rollers out and I have them wrap it.

I used to go to a dominican salon in Montreal, so I only experienced one DS. I didn't experience damage but she was into haircare, always deep conditioned under those heatcap thingies, rollerset and blowdry, she never told me to come every week, but shared some stuff with me( what we already know here in LHCF) to do to my hair between visits.
I went once a month or when I needed it done(not so cheap here in Canada). she also relaxed my hair and took care of not overlapping, I also covered the rest of my hair with conditioner as someone here advised to do.it helped that I'm cuban and speak spanish because yes, I heard some derogatory terms towards some haitian girls in the store, mainly if they were getting a weave, they used to tell me I didn't need that Lol, my hair is 4b,I know anyone can get a weave but in their minds only so-called "bad" hair needs it.

My hair is almost APL, I haven't found a dominican hairstylist here in Edmonton, I found a somalian girl and she seems to be into haircare too,I'll probably go to see her. The harsh months of winter are coming so I plan to bun under a pretty headwrap(the one you roll around your bun)

Last time i went to the dominicans my hair smelled burnt. and i noticed some hairs sticking straight up that were obviously broken off. i also noticed it on some of the other women in the salon. that blow dryer is too hot. there is literally smoke coming from people's hair. thats just not cool.

I have not been back since. I have been going to a black salon. its more expensive, but so far its been working out pretty good. she does treatments to my hair based on how it feels not just using some standard washing and styling process. i get specialized service.

I luv the way myhair was so bouncy but after a year of blow outs I noticed thinning at the scalp that made that blowfryer unbearable.
Now I only go for the roller set and I leave.
I was thinking next time to have them saran wrap after the set.
