Adventures in ayurvedic shopping

Thanks to QtSlim83's :hug2: suggestions, me and my sister set out to visit the indian stores she suggested. It all started so optimistically but it soon went straight to hell. Ok i'm exagerating but here's what happened:

Day 1: we hit 3 stores. The first store (on Busch blvd. and 50th st.) had mostly oils and not a lot of powders so we left thinking the next store would be better. The second store (on Fowler and 56th st.) was a little better but it didn't have a lot of oils. No biggie I still had one more store to go. We bought 3 boxes of each powder we could find. we bought all the shikakai powders available. All 2 of them. :perplexed It was at this point that i started cursing the lurkers for raiding the store before i had a chance to. So we head to the 3rd store (on Bruce B. Downs and Amberly Dr.), fell in love with the area... and it was closed! This was me: :wallbash: by then it was past 8 pm so we went home

Day 2: we head straight to the 3rd store. They had everything but brahmi products. We bought what we could and went back to store number 1 for the oils. we were so happy.

Day 3 (today): we realized that (wait for it) all the products we brought were... expired! :wallbash: Some were over 3 years expired. why didn't we check the expiration dates! so now we gotta return everything! I learned my lesson: we ordering everything online from now on.

I ordered most of my products online but then realized there is an Indian store in Atlantic City. Im going to visit it today and will be buying from there as long as their stuff isnt expired! It seems that the prices online are higher and you have to pay for shipping so if I can avoid it I will.

How bad would it be to use expired powders??

That is frustrating!! :perplexed I live an 1 hour and 20 mins from any Indian stores in my state. So I settled and ordered all my products on Amazon and saved myself gas money in exchange for shipping and handling. These stores should be keeping there inventory up to date. Maybe one store could do a special order for you.

I didn't wanna pay for shipping either that's why i went to those stores. I actually prefer buying things in stores versus online. I had a lot of fun shopping at those indian stores.

I have a lot of Indian Stores by me and all of their hair merchandise is old and picked through, yes, I only paid $1.00 for my shikakai soap bar but they only had one in the entire store. The only thing they had plenty of was Vatika oil and shampoo. I'm going online next time.

it's no fun finding out the product you had in your head all night in a baggy was expired. No wonder my hair felt like hay afterwards. dude! even the oils were expired.

Caribean, have u tried the Indian stores on Waters near Dale Mabry. I have not but they look pretty big. I live in Clearwater and there are a couple of Indian Stores over here. I find oils but never looked for the powders. the oils are expired too but they still work well trust me. I don't know about the powders. Plus, the oils are so cheap at the stores.

AHHH! WHY DIDN'T I READ THIS 2 HOURS AGO!

I JUST got home from the Indian store on Fowler across from the mall (Apna Bazaar). So far that's the only one I've been to because the prices are moderate and I've not had any problems w/anything purchased from there. I only went out from some shikakai soap and upon viewing this thread, I checked the date on it. Althugh there is no expiration date, it says the manufacture date is JUNE 2005 :perplexed. But you know, I'm going to use it anyway! Maybe it's not expired! If it's a tragic mess, I won't know. This is my first time using the bar- normally I go for the powder.

An Indian coworker of mine highly recommended the Dale Mabry store...but I haven't made the trip yet. Maybe you should check that one out! All the best!

I was disappointed today when I went to the indian store I usually go to. I think a few others have gone there as well because all of a sudden the prices are much higher than they use to be. They are right next to a Dominican Hair Salon so I wonder if that may have something to do with it also. I need to find another one in the area. I hate when that happens.

Sorry about your experience. I also have a lot of expired indian products but they seem fine.

Thanks for the info. where on Dale mabry is the store? BTW we're keeping all of the products (cause most of the dates are manifactured dates not expiration dates) except the Brahmi oil which is totally molded :barf:

I went to a few Asian stores in my area West London and they only have very few of the oils and powders, Alma oil is available, but you have to go to different stores to get the rest. Most of them, I shall be ordering online.
