This is a problem I've never dealt with...

My mother's stupid beautician put permanent color on her relaxed hair by mistake. :wallbash:

I think you can guess what's happening now...she's shedding badly, it looks dry and lifeless, and she is so upset.

I was going to clarify her hair (she's never done it) then wash with diluted shampoo, put a moisturizing conditioner on and put her under the steamer for awhile...I don't know else to do.

Has anyone ever gone through this, and if so, how did you help your hair thrive again? My mom has beautiful thick 4a hair, and it hurts to see her so sad.

Thanks for the help ladies.

I did that when I was younger by accident.

Make sure she keeps her hair really well moisturized and keeps the balance of protein/moisture. And be really gentle. I would skip any high stress hair styles and a lot of heat.

I'd have her really baby her hair for a couple of weeks.

That's terrible her stylist should've known better. :(

She needs strength and moisture. I wouldnt doo a clarifying poo, it might be too stressful for her hair right now. If you feel it is really necessary try a clarifying conditioner. She needs a protein conditioner if not this time then the next wash.

This happened to me too. I just figured out that my beautician put permanent color :wallbash: in my hair. I asked for a rinse :wallbash: and I wondered why the color is still on my hair after FIVE MONTHS!!!! :whyme:. And I have been having severe shedding and I could not figure it out. Now it makes sense to me.

I hope someone posts on how to strip away this color because I have come a looong way and I would hate it all to be for naught.

what i would do is:
wash the hair witha clarifier.
then wash with a good moisturizing shampoo
then do a light protein treatment
then deep condition with a very rich and thick conditioner with heat.

she must keep her hair moisturized daily or twice daily and it should thrive.
also invest in some mizani night time treatment. she can use this two or three times a week and her hair will stop breaking and get stronger.
i use to use it when my hair was breaking and it stopped it in its traks.

Mizani H20 Night-time treatment may help with the shredding and help with keeping the hair moisturized.

ITA!! I'd get some emergencee up in that joint stat followed by a deep condition with the steamer. Make sure you rotate different kinds of proteins for efficiency. Ex. emergencee is collagen protein, so next time, so a keratin. For reconstruction, make sure you look for keratin or collagen. Plant proteins will not be enough to minimise damage.

Hard core protein AND hard core moisture. Most permanently colored hair is dry add to that equation weakened relaxed hair and you need both.

When my mother's hair broke off years ago her hairdresser did an aphogee treatment on her hair to stop the breakage. Then moisturize. This should work for her mom also.

There's great info on caring for colored in the "Color Bootcamp" thread Tracy (sp) started.

Moisturizing Shampoo, Reconstructor, Moisturizing DC w/heat, humetress as a leave in and coconut oil to seal. Do this weekly.

I personally wouldn't use a clarifying shampoo yet because her hair is already dry and fragile. I would also use the coconut oil daily and do not add additional stress or tension on hair (tight ponytails, braids, buns)

Good advice.
I would more or less say the same thing...moisture, moisture, moisture is very important.
I'm not sure if clarifying is necessary (and IDK, it may strip the hair of moisture that it needs).

Thank you ladies so much, I appreciate every one of your responses! :yep:
I know my mom will too. I am so tempted to go and beat up that beautician...but I'm better than that. :look:

I think I'll skip the clarifyer for now...but the hard core moisture and protein treatment, along with time under the steamer are definately what we'll do to start off. I didn't even THINK about using protein, duh!

If anyone has any more advice, keep it coming!

Sure. Absolutely no direct heat. None None none. I know that you already know that the blowfryer and overprocessed hair from coloring doesn't mix, though.

I hope your beauty treatments help your mommie.

I'm just curious, has anyone asked the beautician that caused this mess what to do and why isn't she treating your mother's hair? This is her mistake to fix.

Yep, I think an aghogee treatment should eliminate the shedding. I'm sorry to hear this has happened to her. But if she continues to have breakage and shedding, then she should cut it off because it will eventually thin out over time.

The new aphogee deep treatment is not the same as the old one. They don't have the same ingredients; the new one is much weaker.

I know my mom hasn't spoken to her...but I intend to. :whip:

And I would rather take care of my mom's hari myself...that way I know it's getting the best care at such a critical time.

The thing is, the person who made the mistake is a top notch beautician...in fact, noone else touches my hair when I need it done by someone other than myself. And she believes in healthy hair above all else, uses natural oils, loves to give her clients DC treaments, everything we talk about on this board.

That's why I don't understand how a woman who is usually at the top of her game could make such a dreadful mistake. :nono:

So you're not supposed to put permanent color on relaxed hair? I'm going through this exact same thing with my mom. Her hair is 4a relaxed as well and a stylist has been using permantnt color. Her hair has always been long but she has lost a some length and has breakage really bad.

I understand what you are saying. That hairdresser would have already heard from me. I hate this happened to your mother...or that any person would have to go through something like this. She's blessed to have you helping her through it. I'm sure, with your help, she will come through with minimal hair loss/damage.

Good luck to the both of you!
