Shampoo, why not?

Those that do not use shampoo or try to use it less often why is this?

For me, I did not use shampoo for several weeks on my natural hair and when I did last week it felt wiry and tough afterewards and it took a week of conditioning every other day to get it back to how it was

Can you suggest alternatives that can get rid of product build-up?

You can use about a teaspoon of baking soda with your condish to get rid of build up(I think that's what they do, I no longer get build up...yayyy!). I don't use shampoo because of how your hair felt after you used it. It's full of junk. You read most shampoo labels and the list goes on and on with chemical compounds. I now use diluted castile soap every now and then.

Shampoo is my friend. But it has to be natural and mild. I like shampoo bars, but they don't work for everyone. The only time I use "regular" shampoo is when I have serious build up or I've used cones.

My favorite shampoo bars are from chagrin valley. They took some getting used to, though. I also an like a shikakai shampoo bar that I used to get at Indian stores when I lived in NY.

Sap Moss shampoo from Aveda was thumbs up. But they discontinued it.

I'm a WENNER!!!!!!

I haven't used shampoo in almost 3 weeks now and I love it!! I use WEN Cleansing Conditioner. It's made by this guy named Chaz Dean. He hasn't used shampoo in 15 years or something like that.

He found that shampoo was stripping his clients hair so he decided to come up with something that would clean the hair naturally without stripping it. He created WEN. There are lots of ladies on here that use it and love the results. I'm new to WEN but there are some ladies that have used it for way over a year, with no shampoo! If you do a search on here, you can find lots of threads about WEN.

Sally's made a similar product called Hair One, it's a good product as well.

Since I stopped shampooing (and before this I was using Creme of Nature, which is a very gentle shampoo in comparison to others) I've noticed that I'm shedding far fewer hairs on a daily basis and especially on wash day. My hair feels softer and more moist than usual as well whether I airdry or go under a dryer.

do you still use a clarifying or chelating shampoo occasionally?

I loved how my hair was when I went no poo for a few weeks. I found out that I had a bunch of springy coils throughout my head(I'm a 4b with shampoo and a 4a without it:lachen:) The coils were so cute and I had less frizz more moisture but I was using shea butter and it was building up. Baking soda didn't seem to help with the conditioner(Hair One and Kenra MC) and shea butter build up so I went back to shampoo. My coils are gone now and my hair is frizzy. I use heavy cones now to control the frizz and seal moisture in so shampoo is a must but it definitely messes with curly girls' hair. For me it's a necessary evil. If baking soda and ACV rinses worked to remove cones I'd be in heaven!

Last night I shampoo'd with a Hydrathermal Naturals clarifying shampoo. I shampoo'd twice and boy did I pay for it later. I should've known better. It took me forever to rollerset because the shampoo (as gentle as it is) definitely stripped all my moisture away. I try to only shampoo once a month now because I can see a huge difference in my hair when I stay away from it. But you have to clarify once in a while right?

I haven't tried baking soda yet but I will try it one of these days. I heard it can cause loosening of the curls, which I don't want.

(I'm a 4b with shampoo and a 4a without it) You laugh, but this is what shampoo does, make you hair harder. When I used shampoo I ended up with a tumbleweed, with no poo I have a lush head of s curls and waves. Even my 4b section has itty bitty coils and waves at the roots when it used to be like brillo!

Without shampoo I'm a 3C. With shampoo I'm probably a 100Z! All I get is frizz!! :perplexed Oh da horrah

Just a heads up, and you might know this. But watch out with shampoos claiming to be natural. They may not have the harsh stuff you can recognize but olefin is a very harsh detergent and this is found in "natural" shampoos. This shampoo might not have that but trust me, if you see chemical compounds and names you don't recognize, then how is it really natural???

I've only been using it for 3 weeks....so the answer is no...but whenever I clarify in the future I'm just going to mix baxing soda w/ my WEN. I learned that from Charmtreese, a long-time WENNER.

That's what my hair is like when I use shampoo...I use it only once a month now to get rid of the build up the the baking soda doesn't get to. But I find that I have to do more moisturizing treatments for about a week and a half after to get my hair right again.

I honestly can't remember the last time I used shampoo. I have been using a mixture of Baking Soda and water or ACV and water. I then use a natural conditioner to "scrub my scalp". I can tell a world of diffence in my hair since i've removed commercial products and or Shampoo. I may have to use natural shampoos soon because I tend to get my hair done more by the dominicans in the winter...I also have an apt to get the Keratina done so I know they aren't trying to wash my hair with baking soda or ACV.

hey imstush!

I dotn know why the dominicans I go to like to shampoo like 5 times, so if I told them just use conditioner they'd look at me like whaatt?

I was using CON shampoo which doesnt have sulfates, and it made my hair feel well. I'm going to try no poo for one week and see how my hair feels. Cuz I'm dealing with some bad dryness right now.

I haven't used shampoo in - well over a year, possibly two at this point in time. It makes my hair dry and hard, and anything that does that to my hair isn't good for my hair, period.

I don't use cones/petroleum products, so the only build-up I usually have is from butters/oils, and that comes off with conditioner and/or ayurvedic herbs and/or baking soda without a problem. *shrug* I really don't need it. My hair is happy, my scalp is thriving....

I use diluted castile soap, here are the ingredients. I also use lots of shea butter and warm water usually gets it out of my hair, haven't experienced build up yet. I also use lots of coconut oil and it just washes away too. I sort of wish I could get a build up of shea and coconut, I don't think they clog and smother the hair like cones.

Water, Saponfied Organic Coconut Oil*, Saponified Organic Olive Oil*, Organic Glycerin, Organic Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil, Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Natural Almond Fragrance, Citric Acid, Tocopherol (Vit. E), * Certified Fair Trade by IMO

ETA~ I dilute one part soap to 4 parts water. Some people used it straight out of the bottle and cried about dry straw hair. This stuff is concentrated...

To add, stop shampooing your hair. Just wash your scalp. Water mixed with the poo can knock the gunk out of your strands.

AND, keep empty shampoo bottles to dilute the new shampoo with water.

All of this is good advice. Also lay off of stuff that creates build up. Products with the most fillers leave the most build up. Build up is the stuff your scalp and hair could not absorb. This is why I stick to more natural stuff, I haven't had build up since I've switched to more natural stuff.

ETA~ That is, I haven't had build up that didn't just rinse out with warm water. I have a greasy tub to prove it!LOL!

Bumping! There's a lot more ladies on here who don't use shampoo....

Personally, I use shampoo-n-conditioner in one or a natural lauryl-sulfate free shampoo like JASON Natural Biotin shampoo, but I haven't given up shampoo completely.

This is me now! I use olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, and shea butter and it all rinses out with water, baking soda, castile soap, or coconut milk. There's really no bad build up whatsoever. And most of the time I don't use anything but water to rinse my hair.

Baking soda works for me to get anything off my hair and scalp if I feel it's not coming clean. For me, one teaspoon is not enough so you have to play around with it until you find a concentration that works for you (mixed with water or conditioner). And, it has never loosened my curls. But, I don't use it that often, around once a month.

Castile soap also works well. Just dilute it with water because it will really dry your out if it's not mixed with something. I don't know if castile soap or baking soda gets out cones.

WOW...I probably need to try this because I've been battling with hard hair.

I think shampoo or rather SLS is the devil that has been making my hair insanely dry. While I'm waiting for my shampoo bars I am cowashing. no more conventional shampoo for me. I actually read a bit from the journal of cosmetic science that SLS DAMAGES the structure of the hair fibre- so I think giving it up will be what my hair thanks me for later.

I think after I shampoo tommorrow to remove the a-cone that I used to cowash my hair this week, I will experiment with cowashing and clarify w/poo once a month.

I too am using castille soap =] I think I got the idea from you and another person on the board. Of course, I diluted it with water. I also added a little of my AO HSR to make it milder. Regular shampoo (i've been trying jason's sea kelp poo((horrid)) and gio tea tree poo ((not as bad. saving for more clarifying))) leave my hair feeling...super shrinked in the shower. It's odd to describe, but it's like my hair gets a cue and shrinks while the water is still hitting it and tangles and gets hard. It's horrible. The castille with water and some condish doesn't do it really (it's not like ooo conditioner soft but it doesn't react the same way as my hair does to the poos). I ended up stashing away the jasons poo for cleaning other stuff....anyways, I also stick to using it just on my scalp. I use the peppermint flavor bronners (or is bonners?) which leaves my scalp feeling nice one I'm done.
