The longer my hair gets, the thinner it gets

Girl you better not cut your hair!....j/k if you must then do it. I don't see any thinning towards the ends but then again we usually are our worst critics. I think it may look like that to you because the hair closer to your scalp is the part that was filled with all those rich nutrients more recently making it look more fuller, I don't know......it looks nice to me.

I definitely know what you mean. And it doesn't help that my hair grows in a V, which is why I'm trimming it away.

I thought it was the relaxer, but after reading these responses, that's probably not the cause (even though I'm still going to switch).

WTH is up with THAT??? I've read about people saying this happened to them and I always thought, "I'll cross that bridge when the time comes"

Well my friends, the time is here  The longer my hair gets, it seems like it gets thinner and thinner. I see ladies with SL and APL hair and it looks so thick. Their hair has so much volume, and mine just sits there :perplexed I flat ironed my hair not too long ago and did the same technique I did when I was almost APL. Back then, the my hair looked soooo full. This time, it was just "there" :ohwell: It's not like I have split ends or my hair is damaged. It just keeps getting thinner and thinner for no freakin reason!

Le sigh.

Anyone else going through this? I'm seriously contemplating cutting to APL :look:
Could it be because your hair is growing in uneven? if the back is growing in faster than the front (like mine does) then it'll look thinner UNTIL the front catches up. I don't trim I just wait for it to catch up and it always does. You could wait it out...

:look:.....umm we've all just been PUNKED yall.

It doesn't feel thin at the roots, it gets thinner and thinners as I move my hands down the length of my hair :perplexed I don't overlap relaxers cause I always stretch at least 12 weeks, I'm up to 16 weeks now. I only use heat about 4 times a year. 99% of the time, my hair is in a bun.

I swear I'm not trippin, ya'll!

This is the style that I did when I was between SL and APL

This is recently when I did the same style

This is after the curls fell :perplexed See how thin it looks?

I haven't read everyone's responses but do you trim or dust regularly? The only time that happened to me was when I tried to adopt Cathy Howse's no trimming regimen. In just four months, my hair got so thin that I had to cut about 2 inches just to get it to look right.

Are you wearing protective styles 24/7? That's another thing that could help protect the oldest parts of your hair from the normal wear and tear.

I think the weight of the longer hair is just pulling the curls out more, making it appear thinner. Also, did you use product at night to pin it up? And if so, did you comb through the hair in the morning? If you didn't comb and you did use product at night, I attribute the 'thinness' to the pieceyness of product filled hair that hasn't been combed. I don't think it's too thin, but maybe if you trim or dust a little, it may feel/look better to you. Good luck!

I was just checking out my hair and notice that as well. Since im slowly but surely inching from SL, my hair don't feel as thick and it look thin to me. My hairdresser don't agree, but I was wondering was I tripping. I guess I will up in protein.

Tiffers, your hair is NOT thin. It does look A LITTLE thinner than before, but just give it time.

You want to see thin?

Those ends are thin :nono: It's been like that ever since my nape started growing past my shoulder. Since they don't look damaged or split, I think it's mostly the layers that make it look like that :(

Just yesterday I really had to stop myself from cutting them off. I will see if my crown layer just needs time to catch up to my nape layer. It DOES start looking thin around where my crown layer stops, so that gives me hope.

I say give it time. Chicoro had something in her fotki about how her hair thins as it grows, but thickens up after a while too.

Aww, sisser  Just from the posts here, you've got to see you're not the only one so don't go doing anything drastic. We have worked too hard to get to BSB :look: My hair is the EXACT same way and I agree w/many others, the longer our hair gets, the more weight is being added which in turn can make it appear thin. Especially for those of us who have dense, fine hair. Don't you cut nothing :spank:

I will say though that I fear this since my hair is fine. I have found that using more protein more frequently helps with that but I still wonder how it will look at BSL.
This is my worry. The more natural hair I have, I'm finding I can use a wee bit more protein, but I'm still scared to death of and OD.

I've actually noticed that women (generally of other races) with long hair (BSL or longer) tend to have what would be considered thin hair. I actually haven't seen many women (of any race) with thick hair below BSL. Maybe that's just the way it is... :ohwell:
I think this goes back to fine vs coarse (can't think of what I wanna say right now) strands. There's definitely something to it.

if it's not breakage/damage, then maybe the actual STRANDS themselves could be thinner, like coming to a point, if that makes sense. thick when the first come out the scalp, but as then get older, they get thinner. . . maybe you can try castor oil. I've heard ladies talkin about how that 'thickens' their hair.
One huge misconception (IMO) about castor oil is that it thickens hair. From my understanding, it gives the appearance of thicker hair which leads me to believe that once you discontinue use, you'll be right back in the same boat. I've been using CO/JBCO for a good while now and while my hair was shorter it definitely made my hair appear thicker but now, I don't even see a difference so I don't use it for that.

Mine too...but, I have fine strands. My mom's hair is the same way. It's long (past bsl) and just real fine...almost looking thin.

When my hair is curly, its big...I cut a long layer into mine for more movement. It poofs up some when its rollerset.
This is me too, but I swear my left side is so much thinner than my right :wallbash:

i honestly think its from the added weight. the longer ur hair gets the more weight is put on each strand and it just appears thinner when in fact its just being weighed down. that's just a guess, tho. i know that as my hair gets longer it's flatter for that very reason.

Tiff! You are tripping girl...I'm sitting here looking at your first pic and then comparing it to your 2nd pic....and i'm like What the heck is she talking about, lol.....honestly Tiff, your hair looks like it got thicker to me, compared to the first pic. The 2nd pick and the 3rd pic where the curls fell....looks like thicker hair, unless I'm going crazy or blind or something. I just don't see what you see. It looks like your hair use to be thinner and if anything, it has thickened up. I'm just not seeing the thinness you're seeing.

Hey can you explain this? Do you mean that fine hair thins out easier. I swear the women with the thickest heads of hair have fine strands. I always envied the fine haired ladies..

Neith, I think your tripping too  I do think with some people the ends just thin over time. the longer your hair is the older your ends are, and like everything else, the older something is the more fragile it is.

I think your hair is very thick. And it looks HOT in your siggy:yep:

It's my understanding that coarse and fine actually refers to the diameter of the individual strands of hair while thin and dense (thick) is relative to how many hairs you have per square cm so a fine haired lady could very easily have super thick/dense hair. Based on this, I wouldn't say fine hair thins out easier, it just seems to have a smaller diameter and width making it easily appear thinner as the hair gets longer and has to bear more weight. I don't think the hair physically thins, but gives the illusion. Just my rambling theory :look:. Did you know that hair color could also play a factor? For instance, I read somewhere that black hair is thicker than red hair. Then I found this: "Flaxen hair is the finest, from 1/1500 to 1/500 of an inch in diameter … and black hair is the coarsest, from 1/450 to 1/140 of an inch." I'm guessing the red heads fall somewhere in between.

If this is wrong, someone please step in and clarify .

I agree with the bolded.

I see what your saying. I have coarse strands though, and it's a pain in the arse.

Honestly my hiar isn't APL yet but I have had longer hair. I have fine hair but alot of it. It looked thin when I needed a relaxer and I also went and cut layers in my hair. It gave my hair fullness and looked weavalicious. You might want to consider that.

I've noticed you had reddish color tint in your hair, that could be thinning it out. Genetics could play a major role. But, it still looks nice.

My ends are thin too...and I'm nto even to APL yet. That's why I did the last trim. I think this time I am just going to get to my desired length (1 inch below APL) and cut off my thin ends so I will have length and thickness. If I trim now, it will just get back thin

My ends get thinner the longer my hair gets but I have found that the very back grows faster than the rest giving it a very thin apperance. So I have been trimming it up periodically and this seems to be working. Once the rest of my hair began to catch up with the very back it started to look thicker.

That's what I have found.

I noticed too that my hair looks thinner the longer it gets. I believe it's because of the layers I have in my hair. My nape is much longer than the rest of my hair so since it's the longest layer, it appears thinner. Just imagine that around 20,000 hairs in the back of your nape are 12 inches and the other 80,000 are only 6 inches. the lower 6 inches literally has less hair that length than the rest of your head, so until it catches up it will appear thinner. Allow it to grow out and the ends will appear thicker.

Wow, I thought my hair was just crazy to be honest. My hair tends to also get thinner as it gets longer so I always tell my hair dresser to just cut it up to where it will look fuller. I am trying to just let my hair grow for a year and see how it looks. Of course, I will get the normal trim I get when I get a touch up.

tiffers, are you coating the length of your hair with conditioner before you apply your relaxers?

If you look at a complete strand of hair you will notice that at the top near the bulb is thicker and looks stronger than at the bottom where the old hair is. My dermatologist explained to me that as your hair grows and goes through the different stages it may appear thicker or thinner at times also when your growing your hair long as it gets longer at certain lengths it will appear thinner especially if your hair is not in a blunt cut and the strands are all growing at different rates. If you are not noticing any fly aways (a sign of breakage) or any other tales tell sign of breakage like splits. Then just keep it bunned up till you get to your next growth goal once at a length you feel comfortable with you can aggressively trim to keep that length and by doing so you will cut off the old hair that is not necessarily damaged just old and worn. I have the same problem and am just waiting to get to mid back and once there I will keep my hair at this length till the front catches up (my front grows slower than the back). After that I will continue on to my waist length goal. Hope that helps! Just keep your moisture and protein balanced and hide your ends for a while.
