I shampoo at the least once a week. If I go longer my hair gets really dry and my ends break easier. In the summer I shampoo more often. My hair thrives when I moisturize it when it's clean.

I dont know (why i posted :drunk:), and am curious to see what people think will give them personally better retention and healthier hair....

I've tried both

Washing/bothering daily gave me more breakage and weaker hair, but my hair looks much better--less scragly ends and splits

Washing/bothering infrequently, my hair is stronger, retains alot more with less breakage, but my ends get scraggly and dry quicker

So can either have healthy looking/feeling hair that breaks easier

Or stronger hair that needs to be trimmed more and moisturized more.
Why not wash your ends only more often?
I can't wash my hair more than once a week because the tangle is really unbearable :nono:. But I never stretch between shampoos for more than 2 weeks! No, can't do! My scalp would start itching like a dog with fleas...:ohwell:
It depends on your hair and the time you have on your hand :look:. Some people's hair strive when it is squeaky clean every twoo-three days, while others will spend two to four weeks without washing their hair and still end up with WL hair (like my best friend).... Don't ask... I don't get it either, but that's the way it is.

I'm thinking about long-hair lovelies like Sylver2 and Traycee, and I notice a pattern that they don't wash or manipulate often. I'm learning that my hair is far too fine to wash often because that requires manipulation via detangling. I can't do it. I think there's something to be said about not washing too often...

It's the same for me! I retained more length when i only washed every 2 weeks but my ends were dry and i hated them. Now they look healthier (i wash 2x a week) and my hair looks better but it breaks more on account of all the manipulation, so i retain less length.

Or so it seems anyway (i am still at the stage of speculations and trial and error with regards to the hair thing).

during the semester i'd have to go once every 2 weeks. School's far more important than hair.

My hair was healthiest and thickest when I washed every 2 or 3 weeks (depending on my schedule) at the salon and didn't really deal with my hair other than that. It may sound "gross" to LHCF or whatever. Honestly, that's what it is.

Since I'm protective styling and stretching about/over twice as long as I used to (6-8 wks vs. 12-18 wks), I'm thinking about going back to every 2 weeks to see how it goes.

Re: Keeping Lngth & Healthier Hair: Wash Daily, Or Every 2 Weeks? Which is most effec

I was debating this myself because my hair breaks easily when wet. The problem is if I don't wash at least twice a week, my hair gets really dry and matted. I know because that's what I did pre-LHCF. I would have really nice hair on wash day but as the week went, my hair got more difficult to manage.

Now, my hair is easy to manage, but I am getting breakage on my weak wet strands. I would just spray my hair with water or apply a leave-in, but that does nothing for my hair. My hair just soaks it up in a matter of seconds and continues on its path to dryness. My hair is an hydrophile. It loves water. I just need to lessen the amount of manipulation while it's wet.

ETA: I also don't manipulate my hair as much as some girls do on wash day. I don't detangle while wet. I usually wait until my hair is dry and detangle with my fingers. I usually get breakage when I am smoothing on some oil to seal, and I will see a few hairs hanging on my fingers. It makes me sad. But... I would take seeing that daily over having matted, uncontrollable hair like I had before. It was terrible.

There are too many variables to make a hard and fast rule. For today, I:

(1) Live with hard water
(2) Cannot keep moisture...

So washing twice per week is best, DCing and light proteining (MT once a week instead of every day) but only combing every other wash. PSing all the time!

When we get back to North Carolina:

(1) I have soft water
(2) Moisture is no concern.

I can wash once every 10 days or so and put in a protein with each wash while moisturizing lightly every day.

The choices are too restrictive depending on hair type and water type and geographic region....Too much depends on these variables, ultimatum excluded. I don't think I could ever take an ultimatum unless my life or a loved one's life depends on it. :ohwell::perplexed

I hope when we find our prefect regimens we will post it and our hair types for the help of others...

I love this board!

I'll cowash everyday and shampoo wash once a week. I work out 5 days a week and I sweat on my scalp which gets to my hair every time. I have had serious breakage from not washing my hair for 2 weeks, so I won't allow that happen again.

I'll just have to wash my hair C&G method if I had to wash everyday...

My hair definitely does better when washed every two weeks. It does not seem to recover within a weeks time. It does not lay down right and it takes more manipulating after a wash to get it back the way I like it. During the first week its still too curly, by the second week the curl pattern is looser and hair is straighter. My hair lets me know when it's time for a wash, its way too straight, stringy, and no matter how I secure it, it will not stay wrapped in a bun. That's usually when I get hair compliments when my bun falls they see length, yup compliments on dirty hair.

I'm gonna go with every 2 weeks. This last stretch I got lazy as ever washing every 2 weeks or so and I thought my hair was done! Surprisingly I had no split ends... I came in almost 4 months post with a big bushy pony so I had to get relaxed and dried under the dryer first. She held my ends up like Anew, your ends are perfect. She just put the scissors down, lol..

I will try to wash at least once a week though, but my hair will be braided when I do...

Every two weeks. Less manipulation, more bodily oils for my hair to soak in. My hair is simply merrier in oil. So I choose two weeks. Hands down.

By washing do you mean with shampoo everytime or are you also talking about dcing your hair as well. Because I dont wash my hair that often with shampoo probably 1x week but I dc about 4x a week after every workout and I take my vitamins, trace mineral liquid form to better absorb th vitamins and silica in liquid form, and in less than 15 days I have gron .5 inch of hair. And I am not exagerating I measured it last night. I work out 4x times a week and I hav to say that working out and taking vitamins helps a lot. So with a sweaty scalp 4 days out of the week, I can't wash every 2 weeks, I would die of an itchy scalp. I am under the dryer right now before going to school. I am using Cathie Howse deep conditionier, like I do every monday. I must also say that my hair is in braid (no extension) so there is no detangling, combin, blah blah, then I rinse let it dry and put the wig on top. That's it.

Re: Keeping Lngth & Healthier Hair: Wash Daily, Or Every 2 Weeks? Which is most effec

Well, IMO, I have done both, washed often and waited two weeks, in a way, my hair seem better when i washed every two weeks, but right now I washed every week, or whenever my hair is dirty or if I feel that it's dirty, so just wash your hair when you think it's dirty, I mean if you are not applying anything to your scalp, then it shouldn't be dirty, moisturize your ends, but shampooing too much dries my hair out......I have never gone beyond two weeks, but right now I'm applying a growth aid, so I have to wash every week, but I wil soon change my regimen......

Re: Keeping Lngth & Healthier Hair: Wash Daily, Or Every 2 Weeks? Which is most effec

I feel that for myself im better off with washing on a weekly basis because when I wash more than once a week YES my scalp is clean BUT thats too much manipulation because I only detangle after washing. So doing it weekly is sufficient for me. I did wash once after 2 weeks but I prefer weekly to refresh my hair style. ( Braid outs)

By washing once a week I dont have to play with my hair on a daily basis (detangle) and my hair remains cute which is good and I find myself not having that much of a problem to detangle anymore and I dont shed a lot PLUS my hair is thriving and im retaining my growth just as when I was wearing braids which is a good thing.

Im definetely a happy camper now! I dont have to spend to get braids or hair anymore which is a good thing . However, I only failed the 1 yr of c&G :( since my hair is thriving I cant complain !!!

i've washed every two weeks all my life, but recently i decided to start washing every week, instead. i made the change b/c i think my hair will benefit from getting deep conditioned more often, and it'll prevent less product build-up. i can't say for certain if it will work, though. i'm going to give it about 6mos to see if the condition of my hair improves, breaks less, and i'm able to retain more length and thickness.

I've been washing weekly for about 3 years now... I've retained a bit of length but I think its mostly b/c I stopped relaxing Jan 08

Since I haven't done the BC chop detangling the two textures daily would reak havoc on my hair, so...

If I were forced to choose it would be every two weeks

When I first BCed I washed like twice a week cause I wore a lot of shake n gos. Now that my hair is longer I cant be dealing with detangling and rollersetting more than once a week. For me the less manipulation the better so I try to go every 10-14 days

Ya know... I meant to do a post about a similar topic... On another forum a couple years back I started a deep conditioning every other day challenge.

That has been my tried and true way of growing and retaining healthy hair and faster at that... Didn't matter what I did with it in between as long as I deep conditioned every other day rotating between protein and moisture to prevent overload of one or the other.

I recently put myself back on this challenge and wanted to post it to see if anyone else was with joining...

I personally would choose washing every day than every two weeks. I have been working out regularly and sweat badly in my hair. Prior to my HJ, my hair would break because I would wash every two weeks and the sweat dried out the hair. I co-wash every other day or two days depending on how my hair feels. Plus, I apply castor oil directly apply to my scalp so it is too much to leave on my scalp. Now, that I am stretching beyond 10 weeks, I am slowing my roll on cowashing but I will be making sure this scalp gets clean at least 2x a week.

I wouls say washing everyday with conditioner. I don't know if your consideing that as an answer but I would use a protein conitioner and moisture one to keep things balace. I een washing my hair with conditioner about 3 to 4 times a week that I could never do it only every 2 weeks.

Every two weeks for wet wash. There are dry hair shampoos that can be used in between to cleanse hair and scalp. I wash mine every week now and sometimes if I'm under the weather I go a little longer.

Re: Keeping Lngth & Healthier Hair: Wash Daily, Or Every 2 Weeks? Which is most effec

My hair grows faster when I don't wash my hair often. I would at times go longer than two weeks. However, I would flat-iron my hair once every two weeks and I wasn't applying products to my hair. I tend to have an oily scalp so my scalp never itched. Now that I stopped flat-ironing and I wear my hair curly all the time I wash maybe twice a week. That's because I do wash-n-go's. If I was able to wear my hair up for longer than I week I would wash once every two weeks since I'm trying to grow it back. But, I can't wear my hair up. It's harder for me to do that when it's curly.

When I was relaxed and tried to wash daily it was bad buisness for my hair. Now that Im natural and keeping my hair in twist I wash or run water thru my hair daily due to working out and sweating. If my hair was out I wouldnt wash it as much due to tangles. Shampooing every other wk or so with ACV.
