You CANNOT shampoo a Protein Treament out

at least I dont think so. I thought about this after reading uncertainties over whether lightly shampooing after protein treatments washes it out. /images/graemlins/drowning.gif
Heres my position:

I thought the purpose of using heat from either a dryer or plastic cap to with protein treatments was to open up the outer cuticle layer of the hair shaft to make it more receptive to treatments.

Even if you don’t use heat, deep penetrating treatments contain 'hydrolyzed' ingredients. /images/graemlins/bookworm.gif These ingredients are broken down into the small molecular weight & size that is required to penetrate past the outer cuticle layer of hair to reach the inner cuticle potion of the hairshaft where the ingredients can improve the hair's elasticity or ability to stretch without breaking. Normal daily conditioners & rinses simply coat the hair shaft or close down the outer cuticle scales to temporarily create shine, seal ends or hide frizzies.

Either way the treatment are penetrating the hair shaft!
All in all, IMHO lightly shampooing your hair after a protein treatment can’t wash out ingredients that have penetrated the hair shaft. Shampooing merely wash’s away sebum, dirt, etc. that COATS the hair shaft. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

These treatments do were off, thus the need for weekly deep conditioning.

I didn't think that the purpose of shampooing was to wash out the treatment per say. I thought that it was to wash out any product reside that may remain so that it would not damage the hair - or as a precautionary measure.

Yes I do because protein often leave my hair extremely dry and tangled.

O.k. Maybe it's just me, but I'm confused. /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Denali, what you have said made perfect sense to me until the last sentence. /images/graemlins/scratchchin.gif I'm under the impression you are talking about "serious" protein treatments or reconstructors such as Aphogee or Emergencee etc... If that's the case, then that makes since and I agree with your conclusion. However, the last sentence seems as if your talking about just weekly deep conditioning, which I consider different from a "protein treatment". Am I lost here, or which one are you referring too?

I've never had the need to shampoo after I do my protein treatment. I just wash the aphogee out and deep condition.

I have never tried shampooing after a hardcore protein treatment but I will start. I make perfect sense what you are saying Denali, thanks for the information.

Thanks for clearing that up Denali, and I agree, I don't think you can wash out what has penetrated the hair shaft.

Netta, IMHO I don't think it matters whether relaxed or natural. Most people only use the hardcore proteins if they are experiencing an excessive amount of shedding or breaking. Or if they have their routine down to a science and pretty much know when their hair is getting protein deficient.

Aphogee instructions does not call for shampooing after and up until recently neither nexxus -- hence the confusion.*Sigh*

Re: You CANNOT shampoo a deep treament out

Debjay, I think that one of my threads started this confusion. I recently purchased a bottle of Nexxus Emergencee, which explicitly stated that one should shampoo following 10 minutes of using the product. This made no sense to me, so I questioned other Emergencee users. Nonie followed up, by calling Nexxus to clarify; they were not very informative. Ultimately, as Denali said, it sounds as if when you use Products like Emergencee a light shampooing may be optimal IMO.

Oh I thought the same thing. Never mind then. I see you're only talking about protein treatments. I wondered why anyone would shampoo after a moisturizing deep conditoniong treatment /images/graemlins/smile.gif
