Ok I know i might sound like a brat but.... Why are Domin. style salons always more expensive out here. I live in Far Rock.. and I dont see why I have to pay $24 for a wash and set and a blow out of the roots only.... I know some of the out of staters are looking @ me like and shaking their heads.. But come on...I know for example that Georgina's on Merrick they want like almost 60 for a perm. Me personally Im Always trecking out to Brooklyn. Its way cheaper depending on the spot im only paying 17 for wash& set deep condish, and blow out.... and they use all quality productsi.e. paul mitchell, chi, sebastian, alter ego, R&R...... just venting :wallbash:

i feel your frustration. i used to trek to brooklyn for a wash, DC , set and wrap for a whopping 15 bucks. the commute on a weekend was an hour one way. and i would wait a good hour before anyone saw me. they did a good job, but the commute just got to me and i couldn't do it anymore.

compared to what i pay in NYC, you definitely get a bargain. i paid $52.50 for a wash and set today, which is a very good deal. but my relaxer touch up will cost me $140... the cost of hair care is astonishing... so i don't get it done often. plus, my time is precious. i refuse to travel a long distance for hair care.

I know what you mean as well. I went to D&G by Georgina's next door. Wash & Set $25, plus $3 for sitting under the dryer with my own deep conditioner, and got the roots blown. I'm from Long Island and for the past 4 years I've been going to Yulissa's in Harlem. They do an excellent job and as of Nov '08 Wash & Sets are $18. It wasn't until recently that I got tired of making the 45min drive to Harlem then waiting 30min to an hour to be washed. I finally decided to find somewhere a little bit closer to home. A friend recommended D&G and so far I'm happy and yes it is a lil bit more $ but time is of the essence, today was my 3rd time there and I'm still shocked by how quickly I'm in and out and can enjoy the rest of my weekend.

Have you tried rollersetting your own hair to save $?

wow. Thats a lot. I live in Brooklyn and it's $15 for a wash and set if you dont get a DC, $2 extra to blow out the roots only.

For those prices I would commute to Brooklyn too. From Queens to BK by car isnt that bad. But by train it could take over an hr:ohwell:

I didnt know the prices were so high in Queens.

I completely understand...I live in Brooklyn, and the salons around me charge NO MORE than $20 (this would be including blowing out the roots, etc) for a wash and set...some salons however, depending on where you go, like to throw in a few extra dollars here and there for the most RIDICULOUS things (like an extra $2 to APPLY a deep conditioner...not for the deep conditioner, but to APPLY it!!! I might as well go to the bathroom and apply it myself!) and some places vary the price of relaxer services depending on the brand...theres actually one salon I know that charges the same price regardless of which relaxer you use...

And, I go to school in Harlem and have actually found that the salons around there are pretty cheap too... ("Spanish" Harlem, around 137th-145th, and so on)

:ohwell:Its a total rip off in Queens. If i had the money I'd invest and have my own salon with stylist that learn the round brush technique..and charge $10... Id have one in every Hood. Id make a killing. P.s. all of them would be able to communicate with the stylist... I hate language barriers, especially when it comes to someone diggin' in my hair

(like an extra $2 to APPLY a deep conditioner...not for the deep conditioner, but to APPLY it!!!

They kill me with that. I always bring my own conditioner and they charge $2.:ohwell: I never get my roots blown and I dont have long hair so they only charge me $17.

but not this place.. Pleez dont get me started I could go On and On about my review of Brooklyn Dominican Salons... lol

That's one thing I love about Brooklyn, you dont have to pay much to get your hair done. And there's a dominican salon every 4 blocks:lol: I dont let them relax my hair though only W&S.

Yup ....this is what I'm used to when I come to NY. But get this, outside of NY the Dominicans have gone mad :)! lol...in D.C. they are about 30 bucks for wash and set...last time I checked at Giovanni's in Adams Morgan, D.C....am I still right? Chime in DMV ladies!

yeah i dont let all of them relax my hair... I've been going to one place in particular to get my relaxers and that is Glamour on Broadway. (broadway and Hart st.) I either let the owner Mary permm my hair or her sister Emme. And even then I base my own scalp at home and apply tons of kemi oyl to my prev. relaxed ends.... They thought I was crazy for breaking out the ORS replinishing pack after rinsing the relaxer out. But now I see they do that too. I bring my own cuz they charge you 2 extra for that step. I might try Dominican Essence.. everybody has been raving about them.

Yeah $24 is a lot for just a wash n set. I could get a relaxer for that where I used to go. Did u atleast get a deep conditioner or scalp massage or something extra? I remember griping about the $20 the "expensive" beauty salon by my house wanted when they were the only ones open at 7:30am. I usually pay 12 for the wash and set and 5 for the deep conditioner (if I don't do it before I go) and then give her a tip.

oh yeah. I used to live in Maryland and they wanted $45 for a W&S.:nono: I got some rollers and did it myself. Didnt come out perfect but I couldnt see myself paying that much especially when I knew how much cheaper it was in NYC.

if I stayed in maryland, I'd be a true DIY:lol: cause I can imagine how much they charge for a relaxer.

Georgina's claims to use only high quality products that's why she can jack up her prices.
Try Alexis on "The Ave" heading towards Sutphin...the old lady is 'bout it and usually hires capable hair stylists. Prices were not so bad when I used to frequent that salon.
Quite a few Dominican salons have opened on Rockaway blvd in the past couple of years.
You can also travel a bit further to Corona & find capable Latino stylists as well.
Honestly I haven't paid 15 bucks for a wash n set since I 15 yrs old....

Honestly, far rock is not "known" for Dom w&S so they will charge you, like you are out of town...come to bk,way cheaper...I pay at most $22 for everything (w/s,dc,pins,blown roots)...these salons owners know the GAME well...it is all about supply and demand...they feel they can over charge you because the number of dominican salons in far rock are slim compared to bk...I have a GREAT stylist in bk I can refer you to,pm me for the info,if you choose :yep:

Daggone shame, lol, I've limited my wash and sets to Harlem and the Bronx, maybe Brooklyn if I'm already out there, and then I'll go to Sisters in downtown Bk, other then that, No bueno! My sisters live in NJ and one time I followed one to a Dominican salon out there, they were charging these girls $25-30 and using average products, it's a smart hustle, lol. I live in the Bronx but for reasons beyond me there's only 2 Dominican salons very close to me, one of them tried to charge me $40 bucks one time for Chin length hair, madness, lol

I used to go to D&G by Georgina and I left when it started to get expensive. So now, I do my hair myself or if I feel lazy I'll go to Yanira's in Bronx for a little pampering for 15 bucks (wash set and deep condition).

Try Miguelina's on 108 and Sutphin or the one on Sutphin towards Hillside Ave. they're decent. Haven't tried Miguelinas but my Aunt likes them.

I've never seen prices that low in Philly. I just paid $52 for a blow-out and trim. And I was in there for 4 hours and I went at night! I was a little upset about the price but I should've asked when the price list said "$25 and up"

Try Maribel's (behind Popeyes) on Francis Lewis in Rosedale. Wash & set is $14 and both stylists are good. Lian's (1, 2 are in Rosedale 3 is in Valley Stream) is good and cheap too. $15 for w & s ($2 extra for ur own dc BUT if you bought the dc from them then it's waived) $35 and up for perms (dc & trim is free on certain days) HTH

Whoa!!! Are you in NY? That is expensive for anywhere in NY for a wash and set. Any Dominican salon. There are far cheaper places in all of the boros.

I understand your pain. I use to go to a spot in Bklyn on Atlantic av near Mrs Maxwell's bakery. I went there for like 14 or more yrs. I had 3 stylist that I let do my hair. The price for a w&s was $15, relaxer was $35 for the most poplular (if you bought in your own they deducted $5), deep cond was $5 (if you bought in your own no chrg). The owner started getting greedy and now charges $18 for w&s, $40 for touch up (theirs or your own), deep cond $5, $8 or $10 depending on which they use. If you bring your own cond they chrg $2 to use the dryer and $1 for the pins to wrap your hair. Now I go to a salon near the Colisseum on Jamaica av. They charge $35-40 for touch up (minus $5 if you bring your own). A w&s is $17 but on Tues and Wed w&s is $14 & up depending on length of hair. They are ok the only thing is that they don't shampoo or use a rinse/detangler after they wash the conditioner out of your hair. The bklyn salon would put a rinse/detanlger and comb thru after they rinse the conditioner from your hair. So I'm still on the hunt for a good salon here in Queens. My mother goes to a spot somewhere in bklyn that chrgs $10 EVERYDAY for a w&s. Deep cond is $5 extra. She's been going for a while and her hair shows major improvement. She works near the spot so she goes after work. I live in Queens so I would only be able to go on the weekends.
