Questions about CONDITIONERS...are they really needed?

Whether it's a leave-in or conditoner treatment, does anyone here feel like conditioners make their hair dry??? /images/graemlins/scratchchin.gif For some reason, I'm starting to feel this way. My mom doesn't use conditioners at all. All she does to her hair is shampoo it, blowdry, grease her scalp and hair, and blowdry again. Her looks so nice and shiny. Her hair feels soft, not greasy at all. Her hair always looks healthy too. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Also, is there anyone here that does not use conditioners??? If not, is it because they make your hair dry or because you feel you don't see the benefit or need to use conditioners??? /images/graemlins/confused.gif

For me conditioner is a MUST. If it weren't for conditioners, detangling my hair would be a nightmare. I'd give up shampoo over conditioner any day.

Pooh,

All the research I have done says that conditioners are necessary, especially on black hair. If you want I can suggest a few books for you to read. Right now Shamboosie, Cathy Howse and Lisa Abkahri (sp?) come to mind but there are a few more I can reference for you when I get home.

Since you have decided to transition I JUST know you are not even thinking about NOT using a conditioner on that precious new growth! /images/graemlins/spank.gif

The benefits of conditioning far out weigh the risks of NOT conditioning!

I agree w/Nay. I can't imagine not using some type of conditioner after washing my hair. My hair NEVER feels dry after using one. It's not supposed to.

Poohbear, what kind/brand of conditioner are you using? /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Ditto. Poohbear, maybe it's the conditioner you use? Does it contain too much protein? Or could it be time to clarify? A moisturizing conditioner should not make your hair dry.

Wow...thanks for your quick responses!!! Maybe it is the shampoo. But I use Creme of Nature Shampoo (white bottle, green color around white writing, & yellow top) which is suppose to be moisturizing for color treated hair.
My mom uses Motions Lavish Shampoo and she just started using Creme of Nature Professional Shampoo. Do you think the professional version of Creme of Nature makes the difference???

If you're using a leave-in make sure to only use a little because sometimes too much can coat the hair & since most leave-ins have a chemical sunscreen in them, sometimes it can make your hair look dull and when you comb your hair you'll see flakes that are a result of that coating.

As for regular conditioners, I agree I'd take those over shampoo any day!

Dolce_Dawn and dreemssold... I use LeKair's Cholesterol Plus (orange color in a container). I only use it once or twice a month.

Hmmm...I use Motions Nourish leave-in and it has protein in it. I have been spraying more than usual on my hair...maybe I need to cut down on how much I spray in my hair. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Reclaiming my time
I have thought about this too.

When I was a child there were no such thing as conditioners. I don't know if you (in the US) had them in the seventies. But here - I never heard about them until I was about 13 maybe. I started to use them about that time, when I was around 15. No one I know ever used them when I grew up and my mother detangled my hair every day without major problems. And my hair grew fine and had no split ends (that I can remember). She used to wash it once a week, brush it ( /images/graemlins/wallbash.gif I know!!) while wet and then leave it until the next day when she brushed it again.

Maybe hair can get used to conditioning or no conditioning? I don't know. I do know that my hair looks a million times better now and it sure helps with the detangling!

Conclusion: I need conditioners for the look and feel of my hair and for easier detangling.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!!!, growing up we didn't use conditioners either, my hair never reached my shoulders, my mother is so amazed at my hair now, and I think conditioners have made my hair do a complete turn around for the better, along with all the other things I've learned fron this board /images/graemlins/smile.gif.

FlowerHair and stephypoo...I grew up without conditioners as well. I didnt start using conditioners consistently until after I joined this forum in April. When I lived at home, my mom seldom used conditioners on my hair.

I don't think conditioners are absolutely necessary with CON. When I washed my hair with that, I never felt the need to use a conditioner.

I have used different kinds of conditioners and none really make my hair feel spectacular. So since I'm supposed to use a conditioner, I just gave up and started using Suave again, lol.

I think leave-ins are useless if they don't have a little bit of protein in them. Trust me, conditioners are needed for the hair. I agree with the ladies, switch shampoos.

Edited to Add: Poohbear, I just read an old post saying that your mom used to put relaxer on from scalp to ends. Your hair may be overprocessed (even if you have had a couple of trims) and DEFINITELY needs conditioning.

At one point, I used regular castor oil on sopping wet hair in place of any type of conditioner. Detangling was easy and my hair didn't feel any worse than when I used conditioner. I'd like to point out that I was living in a place with 90% humidity 100% of the time. This may be why it worked for me. If you live in a place w/low humidity...

Conditioner is definitely needed..it's shampoo that's really not need IMO..you don't need shampoo to cleanse your hair or scalp!

I agree as well..and my hair is extremely curly and will dry out, frizz, knot up, and get crunchy very quickly If I dont have a conditioning agent. With this hardwater problem out here, there is no way that you can get away with not using it /images/graemlins/nono.gif

I only use a small amount of leave in from pantene whether it be the light detangle spray or the R&N setting lotion which is basically the same thing /images/graemlins/smile.gif Too much makes my hair look dry and dull.Five quick sprays does it for me.

Conditioner is like FOOD to my hair. If I didn't use any with this color, my hair would probably be paper thin /images/graemlins/frown.gif

I was wondering...the CON is for moisturizing, detangling, and conditioning...so it's like 3 in 1. So would applying a conditioner like LeKair's afterward be too drying for the hair???

i think this may be the sole reason, along with permanent color, why my hair is dry and feels hard after airdrying... /images/graemlins/smile.gif

/images/graemlins/smirk.gif wait a min, my mom still relaxes all of her hair /images/graemlins/laugh.gif and colors it when she gets gray hair and on top of that, she blowdries after every time she washes! Her hair looks silky good but kinda on the thin side! Grease is the only weapon she uses on her hair...how surprising!

I ALWAYS use conditioner, even with moisturizing shampoos. If I don't condition, my hair would tangle, and it'd be very difficult to manage.

If your conditioner makes your hair feel dry, maybe you could try a different brand. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Nay and Ayeshia, I guess I never really worried about conditioners for detangling when my hair stayed freshly relaxed. Now that I started extending my relaxers and have now started transtioning to natural, detangling is somewhat a problem but not a major one. I also have hard water and have been trying to find a shower filter locally.

Anyway, I will continue using conditioners since Im going natural and the fact that my relaxed hair is color-treated and overprocessed. /images/graemlins/smile.gif But do you think I may not be moisturizing my hair enough too???

Agree. Conditioner also really helps soften my new growth and makes transitioning a lot easier. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
