What was your stylist reaction when you wanted to go natural?

Hello Ladies,
Did your stylist try to discourage you from going natural?
I had a friend that has been trying to grow her hair long for the 10 years that I've known her. It seems it would never get past barely touching her shoulders. No matter what it would always get thin at the end and break. We recently met for lunch and I shared with her that my sister and I were going natural. She said that she hadn't relaxed her hair for several months because she was frustrated with relaxers and her hair breaking and not retaining length and that she wanted to see if her hair would grow better if she were natural. So she went to her stylist and told her about it. Her stylist laughed in her face and told her she would look horrible if she went natural because she didn't have the right texture of hair (I think she has mix of 4a 4b hair). So she relaxed her hair and out of frustration cut it really short. I tried to encourage her but I think she has given up going natural and on trying to grow her hair long.I felt so bad for her because she seemed so sad that she "had" to relax her hair and that it will prob not ever grow long. I'm not surprised that her stylist did this because I have never seen even one natural client in her shop. Plus she would lose money. I think its is probably common practice that hairstylist will discourage there clients from going natural since most of them are used to only working with relaxed hair.
I rarely ever go to hairstylist so I don't have this problem. It's mostly my family who keep telling me my hair is going to fall out if I don't relax soon. I'm just wondering how many people were discouraged by a hairstylist when they decided to go natural.

My stylist told me that with my fine hair type, going natural would be a "no, no".. your hair is trained for relaxers, and it will break off without them

I didn't tell my stylist, I just stopped going. She still doesn't know I'm natural LOL.

I've never been discouraged by my stylist b/c i never told him. I just stopped going.

I didnt tell my current stylist I wanted to go natural, I went to her as a new full natural. She said to me any stylist that suggested relaxers or put a touch up in your hair isn't your stylist/friend. they just wanted a higher paycheck!
Actually, Im seeing more salons that offer natural heads healthy services

I swear i do not get this whole "Your hair will fall out if you dont relax it" thing I have never heard that before besides on here(BHM & LHCF)!!

I do not usually go to a salon, but when i was first transitioning(i transition 3x) i went to 2 different stylist(long story), one was white & the other was black. I told both of them that i did not want any more relaxers and they both said "Good, you dont need them anyway" So im thinking whats that suppose to mean?I dont think anyone needs a relaxer So anyway they were both happy?!!

I've had the same hairdresser all my life, she was dissapointed when I relaxed! She loves my natural hair and was happy to hear I was transitioning at the time. Shes relaxed herself but helped convince my mum to go back to her natural hair too

I went to my stylist after being natural for a year to get a blow out.. She was so appalled by my natral state she "encourage" me to get a relaxer so I did. I regretted my decision, so I asked her to rinse it out 5 minutes into it, she hesitate but she did I stopped going to her

Not knowing how to take care of my natural hair and hating how my hair was thin and breaking with relaxers, I started looking on the internet and found YOU GUYS. Now I am texlax and my hair is doing great.

I became my stylist (w/ exception of cali as I had a little help from someone there occasionally)

a few years ago, i'd decided i wanted to go natural. i went to my stylist at the time, whom i thought was my friend, and who when she first started, i'd refered dozens of clients to her to set up a client based. she pretty much told me it was a bad decision, and looked at me like i had 2 heads on my head when i told her. when i made the decision, i'd already had close to 4+ inches of new growth, due to wearing braids consistantly during the spring and summer. i wanted to grow my hair out, and needed advice on the steps needed to take. i was soo discouraged and i didn't know anyone who'd ever "transitioned" and had no idea where to start. i just decided to get a relaxer and grow my hair longer.

I didn't tell my stylist. I just stopped going. Imo stylists are not owed an explanation for our choices. I never considered my stylist as a friend, just someone who I paid money for a relaxer and cut. It would be great if stylists would encourage people to do what is best for the health of their hair, but unfortunately, they are usually thinking about their pocketbook.

My stylists have all been supportive everytime I went relaxer free.

When I was a child the woman who did my grandma's& mom's hair as a child seemed to handle my hair with ease. I know she gave my mom product recommendations. My experience was the same with my stylist when I was in high school.

The times I have since on my own, the stylists themselves were natural so they were supportive as well. Any stylist who would disparage me from being natural would never see me again.

She told me:
" I don't do no Press and Curllll Here."

She never saw me again.

Back in 2000 my ex-stylist laughed at me when I told her I didn't want to relax my hair anymore. By then I hadn't relaxed in 4 months. I didn't know how to transition so she reminded me of how much of a hot mess I looked like. She's like girl don't even bother, all your hair will fall out anyway plus your hair is used to the relaxer so it won't grow right. I must've been a damn fool for listening to that LOL

Fast forward to 2007 and my new (well now she's ex too) stylist encouraged me and told me that although I had not touched a relaxer in 5 months my hair was looking good. She cut 3-4 inches off and did a blow out. I only saw her again maybe 3 times after that because I became a DIY'er. I haven't been to a salon in almost a year.

I went to a dominican stylist religiously every week or two. She was disappointed but she supported my decision to go natural. I still go there with friends when they are getting their hair done and she always compliments my hair.

My stylist has been supportive of my decision to go natural.
She encourages me to do what is best for the health of DD and my hair.
She is great, she teaches DD how to wrap her hair and moisturize, etc before she leaves the salon all the time.

I haven't been to her in a few months because I want to get know my natural hair for myself. I will go to her soon, even if it is to say hello.

We were becoming friends (so I thought) and she stopped returning my calls

My stylist was very supportive. She's natural herself, so she was trying to give me advice for my transition.

You're friends natural hair means one less paycheck for her stylist. Bring her to hair forum so she can keep it movin'.

Okay that is the BIGGEST BUNCH of BS I have ever heard of. How is the hair coming out of your scalp that is brand NEW Growth Trained to a relaxer. Okay that is just IGNANT.

Just wondering.
But I hate when stylists tell people you hair is USED to a relaxer.

Nonsense

She wasn't excited, but supported my decision. She also told me that she's not great with natural styles. After a heat damage situation in October 08, I haven't been back. I'm natural now, but waiting for the heat damaged ends to transition.

My sylist supports my decision. Actually, she has been a cheerleader for me when I felt frustrated. The person who does not support my decision is my husband.

my stylist was SUPER supportive! and helped with transitionting styles up until i moved to san diego... now i cant find her!

I still go to my stylist every now and again to get my ends trimmed and she's just like "so you are doing the 'Afrocentric' styles now?" My question is why do most black people think if your natural you're automatically afrocentric? I am just wearing my hair as God intended...NATURAL!!

My old and current stylist actually was very supportive of me going natural! She's a pressed natural herself, and she has a daughter who is natural and WL, so she would always laugh when I would apologize when she had to detangle my hair, saying that she gets much worse at home. I never have to worry about heat damage when she straightens my hair.

I just haven't been there in a while because I am a poor college student, so I'm trying to be more DIY

I didn't have a stylist so there was no one to tell.

At the time I decided to go natural, I did not have a stylist. She had moved out of state after many years of doing my hair so I was becoming a DIYer while looking for a new stylist.

I firmly believe that if she had not moved, I would still be weaving every 12 weeks & relaxing.

I didn't vote because I didn't really have a regular stylist. I only went to the shop to get a relaxer. If one couldn't get me in, I would go to another. But, I did ask one what she thought of me going natural, and she asked how I wanted to wear my hair. I told her I wanted to wear WNG's and she said, "Oh no, girl. You can't wear wash n go's. You ain't got white folks hair now!!"
