How do you use a steamer?

Merry Christmas to me! I have the best husband in the world!

He is converting one our bedrooms into a beauty salon (I guess he got tired of all of my ish all over the place).

Anyhoo, he has already purchased a salon chair, a Pibbs 514 and a treatment and stuff cart.

I am interested in a steamer. What is a steamer supposed to do? Does it replace the Pibbs? How do the Dominicans use it (I am on the West Coast, alas no Dominican salons).

Thanks in advance!

Your husband gets 10 thumbs up from me!

I'm not exactly sure how to use a steamer myself, but I'm gonna buy one for my hair for Christmas, so I'll be following this thread for advice.

a steamer is used with a conditioner to allow more moisture into your hair. you cna still keep the pibbs as your drier.

Kudos to your husband!

My brothers just ordered this hair steamer for me for Christmas: http://www.evasalons.com/store/inde..._id=37&zenid=59613f43c96cede8afe205a238f427b3

I should get it next week, so I don't have any experience yet. From reading through the old threads on hair steaming, most regimens I saw use steam 1-2x per month. After applying DC, sit under the steamer (no cap needed) for 15-45 minutes (times ranged). The steamer helps infuse moisture into your strands while you deep condition.

A hair steamer is not the same as a hair dryer, so it will not replace your Pibbs. SamanthaJones (a member here) previously posted a home steam treatment you could do using a regular hair dryer, like a Pibbs, but now that you'll have the steamer, you can just do as I described above.

People who steam reported more moisturized, softer, shinier hair. Better rollersets, hair that was more elongated and an overall improvement in the short and long term in the health of their strands.

I can't wait to get mine!! :)

I have one. You put the condish or oil on your hair and sit under it like a Pibbs.

DON'T USE A SHOWER CAP!!!

I don't know why people say to do that, but it really defeats the purpose of the whole process.

Have fun!

Bumping this!

I just got my steamer from SRU, I put it together and I have a few questions... do I need to leave the vent open or closed? Are you ladies steaming with the orange and red power or just the orange? I see it goes up to 60 minutes... what is a decent steaming time?

Wow, it has been a minute since this was posted!

I steam with the vents closed and both the red and orange power on. If I am steaming in some henna, I set it for 1 hour. Otherwise, I usually steam for about 30 minutes.

Thanks Taz!
I was using the search function and typing in "steamer 2 buttons" or "steamer vents" and got nothing. I guess you can open the vents if it's getting hot under thur!! LOL

When you steam in the Henna it doesn't rinse out the next steam correct? Because I have been steaming after I color and the steamer has been taking my color out.:wallbash:

Also, when you steam in the Henna does it make your hair brighter or more red? I don't want my hair to get more red?

I usually do a henna/indigo treatment so my hair does not turn red. In fact, what I do is steam in the henna/indigo and then leave it in overnight.

I have not had the problem of the steamer taking my color out.:look:

What I do is put in the color and wrap cotton around my edges so that the color does not get on my skin. I then sit under the steamer for 1 hour.

This last time I mixed beer (yes, I got the stink eye from DH) in the henna/indigo and the results were fantastic!:yep:

I was reading this at work like:  Then I read you commenting on how Old the thread was.

I Knew you already had your Home Salon Set-Up.

Yes, the Steamer should be part of everyone's Arensal of Tools/Equipment. It Moisturizes your Hair Like None Other and......If you are a Lover of Good Conditioners, Deep Conditioners the Steamer will totally make those Products Perform to Full Capacity. Like Conditioners on Steroids.:lovedrool:

And those conditioners that you think are just kinda so-so, it will also take them to the Next Level. On the Moisturizing Tip -- You can't Beat it.:look:

It was by Far the Best Single Investment I made for My Hair. The weekly Pay off and Benefits of Steaming are Unsurpassed.:love3: It actually "pays" for itself. You will use less product and get greater concentration.
