Split ends on Natural hair??

So my last relaxer was June 30th 2008. I'm still transitioning at this point. I have not used any heat since I started the transition. I pretty much deep condition on Sundays and wear a bun all week. I may do a conwash mid week if I worked out a lot ( don't like that sweaty head feeling). Last night I was doing my usual granny braids that I do before bed. I noticed a strand of hair on the sink. It was long and I was curious. It was a shedded strand ( the bulb was there at the curly end); then I looked at the rest of the strand and I saw those tail things. Right above the relaxed end of the hair, a few spirals up onto the natural hair! How does that happen? I haven't used any heat. I do buns and a DC often. I clipped if off but now I have to find the time to "go fishing" for more of these. Has anyone else had this happen?

Split ends don't only come from heat. Maybe you need to seal the ends of your hair with an oil after you put on your moisturizer. hth

Yea gurl natural does not = the end of split ends....

As a natural I found that I was washing/ co-washing more often which can lead to even MORE slpit ends if you are not adding moisture/ sealing with an oil often enough.

It takes a while to find what's best for your personal texture .... U may need to revamp your moisture routine to cut down on the splits

For me, it seems like split ends are more abundat as a natural, due to those dang single starnd knots. WnGs are a no no for me now because everytime I do a WnG, I get more SSK and when those dang things break off, they split the strand.

I thought had a good routine. I don't do the wash and go either, way too many tangles that way. I have to braid it up after a wash.

Split ends come with the territory. I find that monthly search and destroys help immensely. I take a section of hair and just carefully inspect for split ends or knots. I realized that keeping the hair in a stretched state leads to less split ends on my hair. I wouldn't panic just yet. At some point straighten your hair (you don't need heat for this) and do a thorough inspection.

On my end, I find that doing wash and go's or sleeping without a satin bonnet leads to these suckers.

Co-signing on the above^^. Love my WNGs but the SSKs really suck. I spent about an hour S&Ding some last night. :wallbash: Sealing my ends with a bit of castor oil helps for me.

Everyone gets a few split ends. From stick straight to the most kinky hair. :)

As long as they aren't taking over, you're probably fine. There is no one on this planet that has absolutely zero splits.

I Am So Blessed

I'm easy going.
every time i go to look for splits, there are none. but i still do a dust/trim about every month or two. maybe thats why there are none. i dont use an oil all the time to seal maybe once every two weeks if i think about it.

Split ends are to hair what growing old is to living things. Hair will wear and tear and split. This is why I don't even waste time with search and destroy, coz I can bet my bottom dollar, there is no way you can see each and every split end there is in your hair. Not only do you need a microscope for such an inspection, and all the time in the world, but how can you tell if a hair hasn't completely broken off leaving half a split? It'd look like it isn't split when really you're catching the "quiet just before the storm"...a time when hair is just waiting to break off?

I think the best thing to do with any hair is dust regularly. Every six or eight weeks, just nip off about 1/4 inch from all your strands. Won't stop the splits but it'll stop them from wrecking havoc on your hair. Do it regularly, and protect the ends that are left, and you may not have an issue with thin breaking ends.

That's what's taught in my church anyway and I'm a believer.

I wear a lot of dew drops (a tucked under pony), and I notice that i get lots of splits around my halo where my ouchless band binds the ponytail together. Where are your splits? Could it be whatever you use to bind your ponytail together for your bun?
