Westwood College commercial- Curly hair is great for college, but not in Real world?

So I'm watching tv and this commercial just came on for Westwood college. They showed this montage of this students life. While they were showing images of her in the classroom she had this LOVELY curly hair... then they show her graduating with straight hair... then they show her in the corporate board room with straight hair pinned back.

I just want to know why she had to have such a drastic hair change once she made it in the real world. I guess I'm overly sensitive, I'm transitioning and my mom basically said that was a bad idea because I have to get a job after I graduate. As if to imply only relaxed hair is suitable for the corporate world.

Idk why that lame commercial got me all upset. I just really thought it would be a beautiful image to see a curly haired girl in the boardroom.

that's the commercial... I guess she's still "curly" haired, just in a protective style? Idk I just loved her free and curly...

Yeah. You're too sensitive. I get that way sometimes too.

You'll be fine with natural hair. There's loads of natural haired women in Corporate America.

I thought that too but then I figured while she was on the computer at westwood she found LHCF and started wearing her hair in a protective style.

I knew which commercial you were talking about before I clicked the link. They run that commercial to death, don't they?

I don't really take issue with it. Not that I know the wardrobe and hair stylist, but I think they were trying to change up her style to differentiate her from her college and waitress days.

It's funny, I can't remember a time where I've seen so many women with natural hair portrayed in TV commercial and print ads. I love it!

I know what you mean and I dont think you're being overly sensitive. The Dr. Miracles commercials piss me off to no end they always start out with a woman with "frizzy" aka big hair screaming in horror and fright and then they show the end result of "Dr. Miracles" and how she ends up with straight "good" hair, I'm always disgusted by their tv and magazine ads and have never ever bought any of their products as a result.

We're constantly inundated with this myth that straight hair is always superior to the way our hair naturally grows out of our heads. There is always someone telling us that straight hair = success, straight hair = beauty. Well that isnt the case where I live in NYC thank goodness. There are natural men and women climbing the corporate ladder without issues.

In my Real Estate firm I routinely come into the office with all the styles you see in my siggy and then some and the only comments I get are compliments and awe at how I managed to do it myself. The most successful highest grossing agent in my park ave firm is a dark skinned natural sista who keeps her hair in a fro year round, she also dyed it auburn lol.....so thankfully I have example after example of how straight aint nothing but another style.

I will never use those products for that reason! Plus there is way too much overacting tom foolery in their commericals... I feel like it sets us back

Thanks... I remember someone posts that link from BET where this women went on 106 and park and took out her straight weave and rocked her natural hair live on air. And she was afraid of getting a job. Any everyone was applauding her...and I know I commented something about How I thought it was awesome, but I thought I'd be relaxed for life. Now look at me...

I am just waiting to see someone with a big Angela Davis in a suit as a CEO or a high powered attorney or something. I think that is beautiful and powerful. But a demure updo or straight style is just sooo safe and blah. I know that a lot of places do have dress codes.

Does anyone remember that episode of Living Single where Kyle's bosses wanted him to cut off his locs. I was so proud when he said no.

I just feel like the portrayal of natural hair is always that of artistic free loving and straight hair is seen as business-minded. I think of that show Half and Half with the two sisters.

I dont know if its just me..but her hair doesnt look straight at all.. It looks like its just brushed back in a cute professional pin up style.. guess they wanted her to have that sterotypical business woman look..

I loved this commercial...because she has natural hair and even though it is pinned up at the end...its the same thing I do when I am on the job. (So I took no offense to it.) I think think this commercial is putting naturals in a positive light....(They could have a chosen some one with the typical straight look.) And more commercials like this help redefine what people see when they look at people with natural hair.(We have away's know that..but hey.) As BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Yea, her hair didn't look straight to me. It looked just as afro-textured, but pinned up. I thought it looked cute.

Yeah, when I actually saw the commerical on youtube... instead of the random glancing up at the tv screen, I saw it wasn't straight straight that's why I said

I agree with you Tey, it just looks as if her hair is pinned up. I expected to see more of a drastic change.

yeah... but I swear whilst mutlitasking and just glancing at commerical, it looked like a drastic change... then I went on youtube to find the commercial and got a close look. She's def still natural... just not as fierce! haha.

She looks familiar... I think I saw her in an independent movie. Her hair was natural in it too, but a lot fuller and longer.

I agree with a few others who said her hair really isn't straight. Her hair looks like mine. It just looked messy in the first half and then put together in the second half. I don't think they changed her hair texture whatsoever.

I know what you mean, OP...lol. I, too, expected her hair to have been straightened but was pleasantly surprised to see that it wasn't. They definitely could have done a lot worse with making her look "corporate conservative."

Um..... Wow. The hair on her head is still curly. Its just pulled back in a french roll and smoothed to look more "professional" i.e. neat and smooth.
