For me it was twist + bun - ie, I stuck my twists into a bun. Just a bun alone gave my hair too much room to shrink/tangle around itself.

Yep this is what happened to me during my pp sheading...buns caused to much matting and tangles while braids or twist kept my hair separated and made detangling the shead hairs more managable.

This is exactly what I'm doing now--also as seen in my siggy.

In the past, I grew my hair long with weaves, but I found those to be thinning, plus, I want to deal with my own hair now. I'm finding that the bunned twists are really helping me to retain well.

This is a beautiful bun!!! I want to try this as a retention method.

Bunning and twisting work best for me. My hair's not long enough to bun my twists yet, but I do them both individually and have had very nice results with them :yep:.

I am not natural, I'm texlaxed. I couldn't vote because I don't do any of those for retention. I wear my hair in a ponytail all the time. No bun though.

I guess for me, I would be scared of bunning simply because I keep the combs and brush out of my hair. So far that, and twists, have helped me a lot with retention.

When my hair gets longer, I'm thinking full Collarbone length, then I will definetely do the bunning :yep:

Bunning for me. When I used to get my hair braided, my hair developed a "memory" for being in "braid formation" and would lock and tangle like nobody's business! It was like my hair was doing the lambada or something.

I don't use any kind of scrunchy or anything for my buns. I just wrap my hair around itself and strategically place my bobby pins.

I wanted to vote twice lol. Braids with extensions and weaves helped me to retain alot length because my hair likes to be left alone. With these styles I was able be presentable without manipulating my hair.

I wish I could have chosen 2 lol. I braid or twist my hair & put a stocking cap wig over my hair. Everynight, I take off the wig, spray s-curl and scarf it up or I will baggy every other night...so far so good.

i vote for weaves.
i love to change styles often. therefore, whenever i do protective styles without extensions, it's way too easy for me to just pull them out when i'm bored. i'm not disciplined enough to stick my hair in a bun or twists and leave it alone.
in a weave, i can't get at it, unless i wanna take down the whole thing...and i never really feel like doing that.
^^This. And you retain every lick of growth too.

I get more retention through twisting and/or bunning. Keeping my ends buttered up always helps.

Bunning for me. its quick and easy. Chunky braids on my own hair on weekends for a break - I really love this.

For me personally, I can get good retention with just about any style I do if I just leave the hair alone for the rest of the week (until wash day) and as long as my hair is up. I hate wearing my hair down and it's at an awkward length right now so it's always pinned/clipped up and off my shoulders. Sometimes I will use ouchless ponytail holders and bobby/hair pins for a high bun, a style I am beginning to really love. I've done a handful of braid outs and twist outs. However, braids or twists are never an actual style for me, but I want to see how that will work out. I do a lot of bantu knot out updos; they've gotten me through a lot. I use jaw clips often, no problems.

Buns all the ways, ultimate retention, minimal breakage, simple and very versatile!

Yes, you are true bunning inspiration lol. When my hair is at least pass my shoulders I will be a bunning queen but right now I will look a HAM tryna rock a bun. :lachen:

Wow, this looks great and I can see why it would retain length but I wouldn't know how to begin to do this!:perplexed I can see myself now....trying to keep one row twisted and not interrupting it when I move to the next row..... :nono: I wonder if there's a tutorial on this somewhere?

I wore wigs all the time, but I had my hair in a loose bun with a baggie over it underneath. I wore a really cute short Rihanna (Good Girl Gone Bad era) wig and my hair was 4a/b natural almost waist length.

I retained a lot of growth while in sew ins , however after repeated installments my hair started to thin. So maybe sew ins every so often would be better.

Though i've worn more braids in recent years, I voted and believe bunning is better for retention. Less combing or comb outs, less stress on hair = Retention! The hair is handled alot less.

Braids/ twists (no extensions), bunned, under a wig. It's done wonders for both retention and moisture retention.

I voted for Twisting/Braiding (extensions) as I find that if I leave my hair alone for two/three months it grows a lot. I used to twist my own hair when it was natural using pure beeswax and this also grew my hair a lot. Right now I'm relaxed but as my hair is a little damaged in some areas at the moment I may go back to braiding or twisting with extensions for a while to give my hair a break from chemicals. I was trying to avoid doing this as I spent years wearing twists and braids with extensions and was getting really bored, but it really does grow my hair.
