Wow all of these stories have me cracking up, but at the same time dreading the day when my future daughter tries any of these, because I plan to have her hair healthy from the cradle to the grave if I can help it lol,

My mishap actually happened in November 09, I was putting in genie locks/yarn braids, was doing a pretty decent job, and only had the front middle to do which is where my hair grows pretty darn fast and thick. So to seal the end of the yarn you not it and burn it with a lighter. So I'm burning on braid and my real hair just WHOOSHED caught on fire! I was calling my hubbys name so many times, but I put it out with in like 5 seconds with my hands by the time he turned around from the darn iMac. I held about 1/2 inch of hair turned to sinders in my hand. I was so shaken up I wasn't even scared but I was trembling. I wasn't even worried about my hair because I was planning to BC for my b-day in Dec (like I did yay) I was mostly worried about my face, I like my face if no one else does lol.

My girlfriend had really beautiful hair. She told me she permed it, and if I wanted to she would perm mine.

I wanted hair like hers so I agreed. why did she give me a toni perm (white peoples perm)? And why did all the hair on my head fall off to the white meat?!!!!

I kid you not! My hair started falling out as she was rinsing it and didn't stop until it was all gone. Yep, I had a bc from a perm.

I had long thick natural hair up until 11 years old, but everyone was getting into the grown striaght hair look, so I got a perm (Just for Me). I could never get the "hang down" look like the girl on the perm box with my thick lush hair (I hated that thickness----IDIOT!). My mother only knew about rollersetting with the small green rollers, so I always had the Diana Ross going. She also had no IDEA about any other heat tool other than a hooded dryer. I straightened my hair with a curling iron until I graduated high school (it was beautiful though) Now that you know my background i'll start with the mildest story and lead to the worst.

1. My hair get a little frizzy 3 days after I got my first ever perm. So naturally I put Blue Magic on it to "slick" it, it just cuuurled up.
2. I wanted to have color on my ends like Aalyiah in Romeo Must Die, but my mother said I was too young (I was 14). So I put peroxide on my ENTIRE head, and bleach on top int he front, left it on for hours and ended up with brownish/dryish hair. (My mother was so upset). That's what I get for following my best friend..her mom didn't seem to care if she bleached her hair two weekends in a row.
3. I discovered Dominican Salons in 11th grade. When I got my first perm in one, they asked me what perm I used and I said Motions (LIE! I was using Just For Me up till then), because I always saw ads for Motions in magazines, so I though they were the best. Needless to say, a year of getting my hair blown by the Dominicans every 3 months plus Motions perms left me with thin stick straight hair. After years of wondering why my hair was so thick and full of body and everybody had that hang, I finally got my wish of thin stick straight hair.
LADIES BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR! I want that thick hair back, i've been chasing it since I got to college.

Wow, this thread brings back memories.

Many years ago, I wanted to dye my dark hair blonde, but stupid me wanted to do it on my own. Needless to say I had no idea what I was doing.

I remember using the professional bleaching lotion first (had orange hair), then right after applied PERMANENT color on top of it! Yes, hair was damaged, but I had no idea. It gets WORSE, two weeks later I decided to touch up my roots with a lye based relaxer and my hair fell out in the sink. I was mortified and I had no one to blame but myself.

I went to this natural hair salon in Harlem to fix the problem. This was at the beginning of weave era and relaxed hair was the rule. Natural, chemical free salons were not really popular. Needless to say they were ahead of their time. I forgot the name of the salon, but it was started by a popular model with 3cish hair. Anyway, they cut my hair into a short A-line cut and used a dark rinse on my hair to get rid of the orange. I looked beautiful and was happy.

That was the LAST time I ever applied permanent color or bleach to my hair. I said if I ever want to lighten it to something else, I'll go to the professionals. The great part now is that I'm natural, so it will only be ONE chemical in my hair instead of two (relaxer and chemical). Maybe they'll have to add bleach for the lighter color to take, so make that two chemicals.

When I was in highschool my friend dyed my hair on a Friday and then relaxed my head 2 days later. The next time I washed my hair a lot of hair came out in my hands.

The first time I was natural, I went blonde.....It looked great at first, but since I didn't have healthy hair practices to begin with- you guessed it, the blonde hair all broke off at the new growth. I had to cut it all off and start all over again. :nono:

I have never looked at a light colour again

The color looks great on you. Now that you know how to take care of your hair I'm sure it'll stay healthy this time.

WOW..Thanks for the trip down memory lane..

For me this was @93. I had just gotten married and moved to San Diego..DH was on deployment. Im bored dont no anyone and I decided Im gonna dye my hair. I go to drugstore by a box color like clairol or something like that. I got the honey blonde ( my hair was dark brown at the time) I let it stay on longer that the box said becuz I wanted it to be as close to honey blonde as possible. I ended up with orange roots and the same dark brown hair ends....

I went back to the store and bought some more dye, BLACK and dyed my hair the same day to cover up the orange roots. SO THANKFUL MY HAIR DID NOT FALL OUT! I can lol about it now, but I was skirrred for a whole week thinking I was gonna wake up bald!

I also poured a whole bottle of peroxide on my head b/c I wanted some color. My mother was soooo upset. She spent my whole childhood life caring for my hair and it grew all the way down to my little butt when I did that. Two days later, she made me chop it all off.

When I had some new growth, everyday I would spray water on my hair and then put a thick layer of brown gel on top of it b/c I liked the way my hair waved up. Once it hardened, I would comb right thru it and put more gel on it.

Pump it Up spritz was my best friend! I would use it before I curled my hair so I could have a nice hold then would spray more once I'm done curling and styling to make sure my hair was locked in place. No matter how strong the wind, my hair never moved.

Ah...Pump It Up! Cement in a bottle...lol. I used that and wrap lotion to make my microwave ponytail. From 2nd grade to 7th grade I rocked my Jheri curl. Got it wet one time and got my butt tore up. In high school I used spritz and curl wax like the stylist used to curl my hair. I wasn't satisfied until I heard my hair sizzle. Oil sheen and Kemi Oyl were my moisturizers too. Broken pieces of hair everywhere!

damn - just remembered when I was about 18 I dyed my hair to be the same colour as a weave (yes ladies you read that right - not the other way round).

The same weave (curly weave) was a nightmare to maintain and was always a HAM so I had to use so much jherri curl juice to control and tame it.

Anyway my hair was so slicked that one time I was sitting on the tube (metro) and leaned against the window. When I got up to leave I left a trail of slick so much so that the two guys who were sitting opp me (one of whom had been checking me out) burst out laughing in front of me.

I was so embarrassed I disappeared as quickly as possible !!! :lachen: :lachen: :lachen:

These stories have me dying laughing (and feeling pretty lucky!)

Growing up, I got my hair pressed every 2 weeks (up until I was 18) and my mother was not a real fan of children "playing in their hair". (even up until I was 18.....I know). Shoot, the only thing I could do to my own hair was put the ponytail in the top and leave it hanging in the back (with her permission)

My mom didn't have a relaxer either but some of her sisters did and I was always trying to put their moisturizer in my hair (that I now realize were water based) and it would always mess up my press. (dead giveaway to my mom) I was stuck with shriveled up hair until the next time to press and I got the cussin out of this world. (shriveled up hair that I wish I had never gotten a relaxer on:ohwell:)

-Fast forward to college when I finally got a relaxer. I tried to use a curling iron to curl some bangs and b/c I didn't know how to use one (no experience), I took out a piece of my forehead. That cured me from using a curling iron for about 20 years!

-A few years ago when I first moved to GA, I was working in a small office with about 7 other people; they were all white. (I specify that because in retrospect, I don't think they knew any better.) At the end of the day when I got home, I realized that my silk pink du-wrag had gotten caught in the collar of my shirt (that morning when I took it off my head) and I walked around all day at work with it hanging down my back!

OMG My supervisor for my clinicals saw my silky black doo-rag fly out of my bag onto the floor, I'm quite sure she thought it was a pair of black underthings. LoL. Her face was so confused...

I was always begging mom to get my hair done and she was always refusing. I was the only 15 year old who still had her hair parted in 2 and 2 plaits down the side. One day when she was gone I talked my dad into getting me to jheri curl it (it was the rage at that time). He took me to his ex-girlfriend's salon and she did my hair. It was soo painful I started crying in between. By the time I left the salon my previously mid-back length hair was a TWA with shiny scalp showing because my hair came out in clumps during the process. I came home and fell asleep for hours. My mom and dad got into it and I think it was a whole month of yelling. Everytime mom would look at me she and he would get into it. He KNEW she did not want me to do anything with my hair. I was in the dog house with him. We call it THE EVENT in the family. They will even argue about it to this day.

Toooo many...

8th grade class pictures, with the cap & gown. The most important pictures ever at that point in your life. :look: I knew all the girls would have their hair down, but my mom always said my hair was too nappy to wear down. So instead of a nice press & curl or something, my sister gave me some braids. Dookie braids. And then she tried to be experimental on the night before my class pictures and did some style that only looked right piled up in a knot on top of my head. :nono: Yet I had to wear a cap on top of it for the pictures. :look:

My coat at the time had a detachable hood on it, so when I got to school that day I was so mortified by my horrible uneven, spaced-out dookie braids that i just detached the hood and kept it on. The teacher & everyone kept prodding me to take it off, but I wouldn't. Finally the teacher came up behind me and snatched it off me head (after a struggle!) and then I just broke down and cried like a baby. In front of the whole class. :nono:

That's why I'm just so THANKFUL to be in control of my own head now and to be COMPETENT enough to never feel embarrassed about my hair again!

WTF that's a little mean

Wow! Some of yall have been through it with your hair lol. I couldnt imagine loosing hair in clumps.

Lets see...

I use to lighten my hair with peroxide. Wash it, pour peroxide on my hair let it sit and rinse it out. I actually liked how my hair felt afterwards although I had split ends on every single strand :lachen::lachen:

When I use to stretch my relaxers back when i was a teen, I would use a hot comb on my roots. One time the hot comb got to hot and luckily i tested only on a few strands. They fell off :look:

Oh and I use to wear a pony in one spot all the time. I had breakage down to the new grown in the center of that pony tail. Smh:nono:

I also use to use spritz and then a curling iron and luckily none of my hair burned off

Thats as bad as it gets for me:drunk::drunk:

When I was 4 and my little brother was 2(so like 1991) I cut off his "tail"...it was like 6 inches long. My mother was pissed!

One week my mother permed my hair, two weeks later my grandmother permed it- both times from NG to tip. DISASTER AREA! I was 8 years old.

3 years ago my grandmother(then 73) said my hair was uneven. She cut about 3 inches of each side.

Omg! I did that too! I was around the same age(1988) and my brother was 2 :lachen: I cut his rattail off!

Ok. Here's my input not really funny just sad(poor ignorant me):lachen:...
Aside from too hot straightening combs, etc the worst things that have happened to me have just been ignorance in how to care for my hair. i wouol get SL, I would keep trying to wear it down and show it off. It would break and split:lachen:
I have had a mullet-ish 80's cut
I thought dry ends needed to be slathered insome type of oil or cut no matter what.
We used blue magic, BBrothers, or vaseline to 'grease' our scalps and moisturize our ends:rolleyes:
Sponge rollers with no end papers:nono:
Shampoos and conditioners loaded with alcohol or other harsh ingredients.
Believing that shampooing more than once a week was harmful.
Damaged hair from wearing repetitive hair styles:wallbash:
Believing black ppl shouldn't ever get their hair wet.
I have been a bleached blonde.
You name it at the end of everything has been breakage city followed by chopping off a minimum of 3".

My worst incident was me deciding I wanted red hair like Charlie Baltimore. My stylist put in a semi-perm color and I headed out on a date that evening. 2 days later I noticed my neck would not stop itching. Turns out I had an allergic reaction to the color. My hair absorbs even a rinse like a sponge. What should've lasted a few months stayed in or about a year. It was summer in the south. The places where my hair touched my neck were irritated and scratchy. I looked like I wearing a brillo pad turtle neck that whole summer!:ohwell: I lost a lot of hair that summer. You can see me below with the ends of the red hair:nono:.

Let's see:

- Starting swimming aged 10 - had no idea that chlorine would damage my hair if it wasn't shampooed out so my BSL hair broke off to NL. To top it off, my mum had no idea about conditioner :)

- When I was a teen I was heavily into dancehall music and had a penchant for using metallic gold hair spray in my hair, like this:

http://www.houseofchuckles.com/lf/7/74-01goa.jpg

One time I decided to experiment with a red version but the sucker sprayed on FUSCHIA PINK and was harrrrd to wash out!

- circa1992, using hair spritz and curling irons just about daily

I'm sure there's more but they are buried deep in my subconscious :)

When I was in high school I wanted Misa's haircut from the Big Poppa video. So I copied Mary J's style in the Happy video:

When I tell you I had the hair, the silver puffy vest and the glasses... :lachen:

I bleached my hair platinum blonde on top of a super strength relaxer. LAWD

My grandmother coud have killed me. And I actually have hair today. :giggle:

well I cant really laugh at this becuase i almost caught the house on fire but....

I was at home on break from school and I decided to have my cousin rebraid my hair in micros. She did them over 2 days, one side each day so I could sleep on the other side of my head:drunk:. Anyway she did them soooo tight that it burned and I needed a compress for my head, I couldnt find one so I grabbed one of my neices baby shirts and wet it and put it in the microwave (looking back what the hell was I thinking:wallbash:?). I went to sit back on the couch to rest my sore head and fell back asleep. Next thing I know the fire alarm is going off, the house is filled with smoke, everyone is screaming, running in circles, my sister was having an asthma attack,my neice (then 1 1/2) was bawling and whatever was in the microwave was on fire. I grabbed the microwave and shot it outside in the front yard, filled a bucket of water, opened the microwave and puoured the water in.

It turns out the little baby shirt I grabbed in the middle of the night was covered with rhinestones and sparkly things.

My mom made me buy her a new microwave and for a year she wouldnt let me in the kitchen alone.

Wow, lets see!

I dyed my hair blonde it was nice, I dyed it peach it was nice, I dyed it black and then tried to go back blonde (all with in 2-3 months) and my hair turned green and I ROCKED IT like it was cute! YUCK!!!!!!

I also dyed my hair green and it was with a rinse, went out it got wet and the green started to come off on my face I looked like a moldy zombie.

I cut my blame hair to get my husband mad!!!!! Then I sat it on the garbage and started to laugh..

What else..... I have done some crazy whack crap... I went out with brassy blonde hair, and refused to put a toner on it.

I cut my bang soooo short when I was younger that the pink roller wouldn't full hold it so it poked out the top and didn't even wrap around half way, I thought I was getting a bump it got a bend.

My father wouldn't let me relax my hair or straighten it so I was sneaking with a electric hot comb I went to the store I came back my dad was like let's go. I was like:eek::pullhair: I went to go to the room and he yelled lets go now, I left out for atleast 5 hours, cried to come home, needless to say he didn't listen and when we got home, lets just say the house was ALL SMOKED UP and I was :busted: !!!! and the towel was BURNT, I didn't get :whipped: that was the longest 5 hours I ever had, I knew it was going to be drama, mind you my dad took my hot comb!
When I think of it will be back!

What 40 looks like.
I have been VERY lucky, but I have a few disasters to share.

1. I was about 9 and I was overdue for my bangs to be trimmed. My mother was taking too long (she was on the phone) and I was like screw this, I can do it myself. Pulled my bangs through my fingers down to where I wanted to cut it, but instead of cutting BELOW my fingers, I cut ABOVE them. Of COURSE I cut the bangs too short AND on an angle! My mother heard me holler, ran to the bathroom, saw what I did and CRACKED UP. Wouldn't fix those bangs either - I had to grow those jokers out. Took months. *smh*

2. In college, again I got impatient and let a friend try to give me a touch up with a box kit. *rme* How about she only got halfway through my head before she was almost OUT of relaxer and I was burning! She was going SO SLOW! Then she was like, dang girl, I ain't know you had this much hair. HUSSY! Underprocessed like a mug. I ended up chopping my SL hair to a stacked bob that was shaved in the back.

3. I was a HUGE fan of crimps back in high school; thankfully my stylist would ONLY let me get them like twice a year. LOL

4. sylver, you took me BACK with the Finisheen! LMAO!

And on both occasions, when she saw what I had done, my mother nearly killed me.
She had a little bit of mercy on me with the comb incident, because I was still small.
But with the clipper incident...wooh lord. She beat me so. damn. bad.
At one point, I swear I heard that voice from Mortal Kombat say, "Finish Her". True story. :yep:

i just had to excuse myself to the bathroom at work after reading this...

well my incidents were related to dye, braids, and glue in weaves.. good grief

well the first one i was in middle school, I was washing and conditioning my hair weekly,( with herbal essences).. after the shampoo step i would dip my hair in peroxide.. that hair broke off something horrible... I had to get alll that hair cut off, and rock a NL mullet for a while..

then right after the mullet grew out, i got braids...ugh.. the breakage, and thinning.. then to add insult to injury, i got a relaxer a few days after taking out the braids.. :( needless to say. my scalp just slid on to the floor.

i left my hair alone until jr of hs, when i decided to do home highlites in a box :( they started off red, then slowly faded to orange, then blonde, then just faded into the floor as it broke off.. that was the last time with hair color..

i let my hair grow and it had gotten past SL !!!!!!

that was until i got that glue in weave :wallbash:.. back to NL after it came out

then there were the micro's incidents

in 2002 i decided to get some... they were cool, until i had to take them out

i have never seen my hair look so bad before in my life.. my hair just kept falling out and i surely cried.... Did i learn, No.... then back to back times with them in 04-05 forced me to bc.... and lose my temples in the process( those still havent grown back fully and it's been 5 years)

I'm pretty surprised i have hair

Banana pieces in my hair!
And scrambled egg pieces after going under the dryer with egg in my hair!
Those dang DC concoctions...

The front pieces of my hair used to stick up everyday after school and my mother never wanted to use gel in my hair so I just cut one side off to almost scalp length lol.

I let my friend's mom do my hair in extensions and it looked like litte snakes with a big bulb at the top and taoered out as it got to the bottom with randomly parted sections... I got laughed at in school and took them out the next day.

I guess I can laugh but I used to relax my hair in college and remove the relaxer with pantene shampoo instead of neutralizer. Of course I didn't understand why my hair felt like hay all day. SO I would come back to the dorms and RE-wash it...apply MORE heat to get it bone str7 then wrap it. I used to wrap my hair with Lotta Body setting lotion barely diluted, slick my edges and kitchen down with brown gel and sit under the dryer until the heat da__ near burned the depths of my soul then proceed to comb this crispy wrap down to flat iron it with no protectant...TERRIBLE. Hair was all over the place!

To make matter worse, after all that damage I didn't understand WHY my ends were so brittle and raggedy looking SO my stylist told me to take my relaxer and carry it down to my ends to smooth it out. I did just that. Well y'all know what that led too. The right side of my hair was SO weak and limp for yearsssssss. This is why I am natural today.

I am amazed at the fact that my hair hasn't completely given up on me. I should be locked up for extreme neglect and abuse.

I was about 8 years old. I don't remember who's idea it was but my mother put a liquid relaxer in my hair.
I don't know what happened but I guess we were rushing because this was done right before i went to dance class. Needless to say I went to dance class with my hair smelling like strong perm.
Everyone in the class was like what the heck is that smell. They turned the fan on and everything. I was so embarrassed. I was hoping nobody noticed it was me.
I was looking around all through class like :look:

When I was younger me and my sister really wanted straight hair. And we saw on tv this girl getting her hair straightened using an iron like the one for clothes. I straightened my sister's hair with the iron and left it on too long then when I looked at the iron plate it was all of my sister's burnt hair. :( Now looking back it is kind of funny because her hair was uneven for the longest time. And I really wish she would take join the forum, but I know the only way she would do that is if she sees me with BSL hair.
