Excuse me if this has been asked before but,
I've read in many posts about doing a protein treatment a week before the relaxer, but that's working backward for me...What should I be doing prior to that day to help the relaxer process better? People are telling me that it shouldn't take my hair to process 40 minutes (from beginning to end)...

Help my break my strands down :)

Clean hair with no build-up from cones, oils etc.

Undiluted relaxer.

If your hair is really coarse, you may want to consider a stronger strength relaxer. In other words, not mild.

If you're using no-lye, maybe switch to lye.

Make sure you use enough relaxer cream on your new growth. If I don't use enough, I get underprocessed.

I'm not sure what else.

I say use porosity control on your new growth but let it dry first. It helps your hair take thing better.

Everything she said..and when applying then relaxer - don't be shy...slather it on that new growth

Interesting...
My hair is always clean, I never use mild strength relaxers, only normal strength...I use lye-definitely. I've never diluted my relaxer. Perhaps i have been skimpy on the application. Are super strength relaxers ever advisable? In my pre pre pre LHCF days the dominicans would hook me up with that. But I never made it past neck/shoulder length...

I agree with the above and especially the bolded. You might even want to consider a chelating shampoo the wash the shampoo before your relaxer.

I've been doing my neighbor's hair for some time (not due to any expertise on my part, but because both she and it were crying out for some assistance), and the steps below have done wonders for her hair:

PRE-RELAXING (~7 days prior):

1. Chelate
2. Shampoo
3. Apply Roux Porosity Control
4. Condition with ApHogee Keratin 2-Minute Reconstructor/Roux Mendex
5. Deep condition (moisturizing)
6. Apply Leave-in
7. Apply Moisturizer – Detangle
8. Seal with oil

RELAXING DAY:

1. Saturate entire head with SAA/water mixture – Let dry (2oz(¼ cup) SAA + 4oz(½ cup) water in spray bottle
2. Relax - Using a coloring/tint brush
3. Rinse for approximately 5 minutes – Towel blot
4. Condition with ApHogee Keratin 2-Minute Reconstructor for 5 minutes
5. Neutralize – Let sit on hair for 5 minutes
6. Repeat Neutralizing – Let sit on hair for 5 minutes
7. Shampoo
8. Apply Roux Porosity Control
9. Deep condition with heat for at least 30 minutes (moisturizing)
10. Apply Leave-in
11. Apply Moisturizer – Detangle
12. Seal with oil

This system is not totally my brain child, but heavily gleaned from the wonderful advice I have learned here through diligent late night searches while sipping tea.

Mine is similiar in the Pre-Treatment Stage of relaxer
  1. Clarifying Shampoo 1 time(RINSE)
  2. Shampoo with aphogee shampoo for damaged hair 1 time(RINSE)
  3. Aphogee 2 Step (RINSE WELL)
  4. Silk Elements Megasilk MOisturizing Conditioner mixed with Porosity Control (RINSE)
  5. Leave in Conditioner
RELAXER DAY - Professionally applied but she does follow these guidelines for my hair that is why I love her, she asked me my preference and this was my list she laughed at first but she liked the way my hair responds as well.

  1. base Scalp
  2. apply relaxer wait appropriate time (RINSE 5 minutes)
  3. Apply Motions MOisture plus (10 minutes) (RINSE 3 minutes)
  4. Shampoo Motions Neutralizing SHampoo x 2(let shampoo sit 5 minutes) (Rinse 3 minutes)
  5. Shampoo Motions Luxury SHampoo (new step for me) x 1 (rinse)
  6. APPLY SIlk Elements Mega SIlk Conditioner (30 minutes)
  7. Leave in conditioner, with keratin mist, dot of chi silk infusion
  8. DONE!

My hair loves this routine and I get minimum to barely any breakage.

I wouldn't advise super strength unless your hair is absolutely the coarsest of the coarse and you have tried ALL other methods w/ no results. :yep:

Try to use more relaxer and make sure you don't have a lot of build up. What brand relaxer are you using? Maybe the brand just doesn't agree with your hair.

If your hair is dry and porous. So you need to make sure you do a clarifying treatment about 1 week to 5 days before your relaxer and if you really want it to take avoid saturating your hair with product, oils etc.

Also relaxers take much faster in the summer when the heat processes them much faster and when you have more body heat to process them.

ETA: Also don't be tight with the relaxer really slather it on and make sure the new growth is saturated. Also make sure you smooth (but not comb) as much as possible in the time you have to make the strands break down further.
